I think women playing Cherubino works best. An adolescent boy looks and sounds more like a grown woman than like a grown man, even one with a soprano voice.

So think about it, Cherubino is a boy who has feelings for the Countess, so who sounds best for that role, the voice of a woman (mezzosoprano) or to a countertenor, who has more boyish sound.. ;) Or maybe we are all used to listen to mezzos singing trouser roles
You have to strike a balance between authenticity to the character and musicality. I think Mezzo sopranos sound better than countertenors, more natural and less strained, and I think they also look the part as this singer is clearly a grown up man whereas a short woman with cut hair and convincing costume will look pretty close to what you want. All in all I think Mezzo sopranos are the better choice for Cherubino
Kyle Whitehead I disagree completely. I think the reverse is true - a man playing trouser roles such as Cherubino. I know I prefer the more natural slight masculine sound than a feminine one which is not supposed to be part of the character at all.

I know Cherubino is still a page, but with his testosterone fuelled degree of amorous longing, I feel that the countertenor voice, however beautiful, is a very unsuitable one for this aria!

Mozart's music is really particular in terms of its requirements... He is struggling with the high lying passages ... I know this coz i struggle with this part of this aria too when i sing Mozart... yet when i sing baroque i dont struggle at all with the same part of the voice.... the top sounds small and squeezed... mozart is just hard to sing.

Example: Rosina , in barbiere di seviglia, it's written for a contralto, however , even sopranos play that character !! How you play it and if your voice places right through the piece is what matter at last. For me here , it's not right, it's not even in the original pitch, it was lowered
His voice doesn't have enough power to carry this off. He sings pretty but there 's more to Mozart's vocal music than just being pretty. There is no dimension to his tone. A true female voice has much more depth and lends more color to the music.

He is so famous because he very much deserves it; listen to him in L'Incoronazione di Poppea (Monteverdi) and I think you'll understand it. Cherubino's aria was not a good choice for him, on my opinion.
I agree with the previous answer: maybe not the best choice he made but Philippe JAROUSKY is a wonderful counter-tenor for baroque music. I've seen him several times on stage, in recitals and operas. Always been charmed by his talent and his voice. And he has a great technique.
