      A 60-70 dollar RO/DI kit can provide water filtered at each level depending on where you disconnect the tube to run the water to your tank or holding bucket. I bought my kit on amazon for 59.99, it can produce water that just has sediment filtered from it using just the first filter tube and running an extension to a bucket, or go with 2 stages to filter particulates and contaminants through the carbon filter as well, to produce essentially bottled water, or I can use 3(the third is an ultra fine screen) to produce RO water, or all 4 to produce RO/DI water with a super low tds of 2-10, and if I run the same water through again with a pump, I can get it to near 0 tds. All of those options are available from 1 kit that can last around a year or for well over 1000 gallons, whichever comes first. Buying water, especially if you buy water for regular water changes too can really add up in cost, and ultimately will cost a lot more in the long run unless you are doing a no water changes biotope tank, then buying distilled water in jugs from the grocery store can possibly cost about the same or a little less, but it's hard not to easily rationalize the pricetag of a kit to filter the water yourself. Even as little as 25% water changes, in a 20 gallon tank weekly would cost 350-600 dollars per year at 1-2 dollars per gallon. This is before considering top-offs in warmer tanks due to evaporation, or emergency water changes due to fish illness. Even considering the cost of water from the tap, ranging from 2 cents to 38 cents per gallon depending on where you live, that's a cost savings of 188 dollars per year in the absolute worst case scenario, and if you only do distilled or RO/DI water top-offs without water changes you'll at least brake even and be able to save on fuel by avoiding unnecessary trips to the store. Do yourself a favor.

      That's a bit suspicious... where did you them from? What type of filter... and what wattage for the heater? What type of betta? Were the bloodworms frozen, freeze dried, or live? What temperature was the tank at? There's so many factors that can come into play. If you got him from any careless big pet store, you've probably already lost the battle.

      Sometimes the ultra-fancy show line bettas have serious genetic problems as well. The healthiest betas typically are very-well bred "basic" bettas like standard palakats with great rearing practices and great care from the owner.

    Places that need to be shut down-
    Reptiles by Mack
    Lasco, inc.
    Sandfire Reptile
    Reptile industries
    Apex Reptiles
    Sunpet
    Barney's Pets
    All these places are horrible to reptiles, and are simply mills. They are also the breeders for fish, amphibians, and everything with scales.
    Some of these places also breed some of the small animals, but not all of them. Those come from local rescue groups, and are treated reasonably well. No pet store should be allowed to sell chinchillas, though, in my opinion, and ferrets are also a stretch. Chinchillas need at least 6 sq. feet of floor space, and at least 5 feet of vertical space, so they can jump and run. Pet stores simply can't provide them with enough space.
    As far as treatment to the animals goes, it depends on the individual store, and the policies and regulations within the local area. Our PetSmart takes good care of the small animals, turtles, birds, and snakes, but amphibians and aquatic animals are not taken care of very well, but they do sometimes do temperature acclimations and do water changes frequently, but they do nothing else for them, other than that, and they way overfeed them so the bottoms are covered with fish food. Most of the freshwater shrimp and any other non-hardy species always die off quickly after arrival. Some bettas are taken care of better than others, some are in small tanks, alone, and others are in tiny 4-inch wide by two-inch tall cups where they honestly can't move at all, not an exaggeration, they don't have any space to move at all.
    Some Pet Supplies Plus, PetSmart, and Petco's take horrible care of their animals, though. Sometimes the places are understaffed, with shelves covered in rat poop from the feral rats that get in and eat everything. Sometimes animals are carelessly thrown in together so there is breeding and fighting happening. Sometimes stores don't feed or clean cages out. Sometimes there are infestations of bugs, rats, and fungi. Sometimes the stores are littered with dead animals, sick animals, dying animals. I think all pet stores should be forced to take better care of their animals, and there should be more regulation and inspections, but all those reptile breeders mentioned above should undoubtedly be shut down.
    You've heard of puppy mills, you might have heard of rabbit mills, but there are also reptile mills, and these are what ALL of those breeders listed above are. Please, let's get them shut down. And let's also get better regulation for pet stores.

      Sunpet has been well known for being a animal mill and torture/death prison for every type of animal that they sell, since the mid 1990's. Yet despite endless petitions, they have been running just the same since 1970. Many people have gone undercover to show the truth, and it's always unbelievably sickening. There is zero medical treatment of any kind for any animal. No such thing. If an animal gets sick, they bash it to death with their bare hands "so they don't have to waste feed on them." The monsters that work there look like humans, but clearly, they're not. Unfortunately, Sunpet is a major distributor that stocks massive amounts of small animals like rodents, reptiles, and fish all over America.

      I have 2 common goldfish my kid got as a treat for Halloween. The pet store gives out the feeder fish, I don’t know why. But a friend took him trick or treating so here we are! That was over a year ago. They share a 20gallon tank with 2 filters on it and I have to take them out by hand cause they are 6-7 inches long each and definitely don’t fit in my net anymore!

    • @SilverScaleMA
      @SilverScaleMA Před 3 lety

      @Kayla Risko not if you do it correctly, as long as you have clean hands that have been rinsed with aquarium water and just a little bit of stress coat and for the bettas use a small water pool in the hands. It does take a lot of practice to do it correctly. For koi and goldfish I catch them in the net and if they are too big to not fold in the net when lifted I do the same thing to rinse my hands and carefully grasp them for the second it takes to move them. Most koi owners use hands to move their fish. As long as you prep your hands properly first it is a lot safer than a net. But yeah if you just try to grab them without rinsing and coating it can really mess up their slime coat.

    I once tried a sorority tank when a petco employee told me it was totally safe and easy because females weren't territorial like males.
    It did not go well and I have never asked petco employees for information about fish ever again.
    Don't do sorority tanks. It isn't worth the stress.

    • @kidwolf0015
      @kidwolf0015 Před 4 lety +11

      Well, it's certainly not for beginners... but plenty experts have ran them with few problems. I definitely don't think that employee should have encouraged a beginner! The problem is that so many physical, psychological, and social aspects have to be kept in mind. Also, not all female bettas have the same temperament... Some are WAY more mellow than others. Bright, intimidating colors typically aren't very helpful either... When done right, it can be great for the owner and the bettas. I'm far from experienced, but I know enough to avoid such a setup until I'm way more educated... Not that I plan on doing one any time soon. 😂

    • @snakewithapen5489
      @snakewithapen5489 Před 3 lety +3

      I've done sorority tanks before and they _can_ work, but it's really dependent on the individual fish. Some females are just as aggressive as the males, and others are chill. Definitely don't take advice from petshop employees though, they're there to make a profit not to help keep your fish alive.

    • @capnsmashem1554
      @capnsmashem1554 Před 2 lety

      You have to literally babysit the tank for hours and hours per day to see if any are consistently hostile or aggressive, and remove them immediately. If you just drop the fish in there and leave them alone for a few days you may come back and find a murder scene. To plan an aquarium for say... 10 female bettas to be in a sorority, is to setup and cycle 10 tanks for betta fish, and hope you don't have to use the other 9 XD That's my take at least. If you have several other tanks where you could safely add a female betta without worrying about the other inhabitants being bullied, or the Betta being bullied for that matter, like a tank full of diamond tetras or something big and hearty in significant numbers to dither any aggression, so that you have places to house aggressive females without needing more tanks, that's a bonus. So I would say it sort of is for more experienced fish-keepers because they'll likely have more options right out of the gate than a beginner, if things go badly.

    • @shilohmustang
      @shilohmustang Před 2 lety +1

      To those saying it depends on the betta, yeah I highly agree. My first betta was very calm and very docile. She got along with many different types of fish and even grew rather large to where many people thought she was a male.
      But the new females that the employee sold me (3 in total) 1 was calm, and 2 where bright red and very competitive and aggressive. They all seemed to get along fine for 2 days, then one day I came back and the blue small one was taken out. Then I found the 2 reds trying to take each other out. Had to separate them and we returned them. The large, first female stayed and was largely unharmed. She still got along with khuli loaches, mollies, and various other fish and was very uncaring about what her neighbors were.

    It was really weird seeing that tank at 3:50 being used for fish because my family used to use a similar looking "tank" for transporting one of our small reptiles to the vet. It was kinda jarring to see it, like my first thought was is that even considered a fish tank.
