This concert took place just a few months prior to the fall of the Soviet Union, and just after a failed coup d'état. The writing was on the wall - the USSR would soon be relegated to the history books. In years prior, under communistic rule, certain bands hadn't been allowed to perform there, such as AC/DC. Supposedly, this concert was held in Moscow that year to prove it was opening up to the world, and the concert was made free as a show of appreciation towards students who stood up against the failed coup attempt. That last bit may just be folklore; I'm not certain.
