His version was bad in the sense of who Superman/Clark is, but that's due to the script being some dark and edgy brooding version of him.
Cavill, however, actually researched the character some and understood how he would look. He "over did" his chest and kept the hair, as he knew that's how Superman would look.
Cavill is a giga chad while also being a major nerd. We must protect him at all costs.
