This was Frank's attempt to collaborate with Captain Beefheart. It was rare that Frank collaborated equally with anyone except for informal jams. But Frank had a lot of respect and admiration for Beefheart and this piece reflects that.
Frank's first solo album after breaking up the original Mothers of Invention. People also started taking notice of him as a guitarist around this time.
For good reason!
I remember being 16 or 17 yo dealing with parents school work and retreating to this album with blonde Lebanese hashish.
I remember "brown" Lebanese hashish, but not on this album. I think it was more Yes then (Tales From topographic Oceans, Close To The Edge)
Sounds about right. Thanks for watching Michael!
zappa would DESPISE you listening to it that way ;)
Imagine how insane this must have sounded in 1969…
It was awesome. The album was billed as a movie for your ears and lived up to it’s billing.
Crazy insane!
It did sound awesome back then, it was the first Zappa album I ever heard, and I've never looked back
It was insane sounding, but I had already gotten on the Zappa train with Freak Out -- While later albums had more cohesiveness, Freak Out contains everything that Zappa wanted -- Avant Garde, musical proficiency, biting commentary, and general strangeness. (With just a touch of a nod to prior genres.)
We thought, this is Zappa in New York, try Little House I Used To Live In from Burnt Weenie Sandwich, for more of what we'd seen in this band's capturing Zappa meets Jazz-fusion for anti-hippy punks, who grew up on Bop/ Rythm & Blues. Captain Beefheart & Ry Cooder toured, just as we got this! Get the vinyl or remaster, not the 80s CD!
This entire album is pure Zappa.
His Jazz side always did it for me
@@stevedotwood Right?
PURE!
Every Kappa album is pure Zappa.
Love Zappa but I really can't stand this album...
Don "Sugarcane" Harris, violin. The story is Frank got him out of jail and his violin out of hock so he could play on the record.
Love it
if i remember correctly he was in a duo called Don and Juan in the 50s
@@markbyers1651 - Don and Dewey.
@@HisboiLRoi thanks i think was a don and juan also
@@markbyers1651 - Don and Dewey, which consisted of Don "Sugarcane" Harris and Dewey Terry, were from Pasadena and were active from 1956 to 1964. Don and Juan, Roland "Don" Trone and Claude "Juan" Johnson, were from New York state, and existed in that form from the early 1961until Don's death in 1982.
This is the album that turned my 13 year old self into a life long Zappa fanatic! Around 1970 we (finally) got FM radio stations including local collage radio and one Sunday night program used Peaches En Regalia to open & close the show - I had to call and find out what it was - "It's Zappa kid, go out and get some!"
me to bro
In Zappa's book, he said: "My lyrics are there for entertainment purposes only -- _not to be taken internally._ Some of them are *truly stupid,* some are slightly less stupid and a few of them are sort of funny. Apart from the snide political stuff, which I enjoy writing, the rest of the lyrics wouldn't exist at all if it weren't for the fact that we live in a society where instrumental music is irrelevant -- so if a guy expects to earn a living by providing musical entertainment for folks in the U.S.A., he'd better figure out how to do _something_ with a human voice plopped on it."
Lol truth. Thanks for watching Scott!
That’s the most Zappa thing I’ve ever heard. Dude was unstoppable and unfazed by the external noise fuck yea Frank!!!
Maybe Zapoa wasn't aware, but the human voice is an instrument. I'm sure that he knew that. Cf the vocals he used.
Singer is Captain Beefheart, high school friend of Zappa's and a great and original performer in his own right. "Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band" was some sort of avantgarde bluesband, Everyone in this band usually played idifferent tempos and melody lines at the same time which resulted in crazy out-of-this-world songs.. His singing was very much inspired by Howlin' Wolf. First and foremost he was a lyrical abstract painter.
There are few words that are capable of accurately conveying what Beefheart's music sounds like, and none of it would've happened without the valiant efforts of guys like John French who drove themselves crazy trying to bring Beefheart's ideas to life. I used to date a girl whose dad was in Beefheart's band when he was 19 yrs old and he had some wild stories haha
Sounds cool! I’m sure we’ll have some Beefheart reactions soon!
@@SightAfterDark Fantastic! Maybe try, _Electricity, Pachuco Cadaver, Big Eyed Beans from Venus_ or _Bat Chain Puller._ They all sound completely different but there's something crazy brilliant about each of them.
@@donaldb1 also orange clawhammer
@@markbyers1651 Yes, that and _Well_ really highlight Beefheart's poetry. Also _Sam With the Showing Scalp Flat Top_ is a really interesting poetry piece he did with Zappa on the Zappa album _Bongo Fury._
This song is based on a 14-year old groupie's story from New York. She told Frank about her step=father whom she trailed down to the Lido Hotel,. She and her friend made up this story about him Of course, she had no idea what brilliant music would be added.
Love your work.
You are the first people I have seen that do a Zappa reaction, and actually understand what it is he is doing.
Well done.
Thank-you.
Go straight to go and collect $200.00.
Looking forward to more ZAPPA!!!!!!!!
Yeahhhhh
Probably my favorite guitar track of all time. Everything in this song grooves together so perfectly. The time passes so fast. if you're looking for some more great guitar and absolutely insane bass work check out the less-heralded Zappa track "The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution". I prefer the version from the Lather album.
@LV Looper - The Lather version cuts out nearly 5 minutes of the beginning of The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution. The original Sleep Dirt album version is far superior. If you are a Zappa fan, why would you want less of that fantastic song?
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video!
This is the song that got me hooked on Zappa at 11 years old The radio and MTV were dominated by Paula Abdual, MC Hammer, and horrible glam/hair rock/metal bands and I turned to The Beatles when my dad saw that he knew I was ready and played me Willie The Pimp 30 years later we still jamming together to the best music ever recorded going to see King Crimson and The Zappa Band in a few weeks
Ah yeah...one of the finest extended guitar jams ever put to wax and probably the first record to really establish FZ as a guitarist to be reckoned with (1969).
Special shout out to John Guerin on those drums!
Hell yeah! What a jam!
And Captain Beefheart of course as the main singer
@@SightAfterDark that's an understatement, his guitar had the right to charge him with assault and battery after that assault on it. Seven straight minutes of relentless jamming, and no way to get bored because he mixes it up so well that there is never a lull in the action...a truly amazing jam. I haven't seen your reaction to this yet, but the way you responded to MM, I'm betting you are still reeling from these two Zappa classics...
@Tim Cardona - So true. This is the song that gained recognition for Frank as a unique and respected guitarist soloist. Invocation & Ritual Dance Of The Young Pumpkin on Absolutely Free is an earlier example of extended soloing, but Willie is on a higher level.
@@Frunobulax74 Yeah there are some cool solos on the Mothers records - holiday in berlin, burnt weenie, get a little - but this definitely raised the bar
Now, imagine being a teenager in the 70's tripping at Zappa concerts.......when acid was good. We did it whenever he came to Chicago. Great times, kids!
On my second copy of Hot Rats, wore the first one out, also have a cd on permanent play in the car, this album never dates, never gets boring.
You guys get it and I love that. My real hope is that it’s not just for us and that it’s something you will take on personally. That’s all any real FZ fan wants.
@Thomas - Fantastic point! I think most FZ fans hope a new listener that seems to really enjoy Frank's music will continue and expand with it because of all the listening pleasure it will give them. I personally have succeeded only a handful of times in turning people onto FZ music in 40+ years.
Of course! The thing that’s so great about this channel is that we get exposed to so many artist we didn’t know previously. Some aren’t our favorites, and some we absolutely love.
Frank definitely falls into the second category :)
When you hear Frank over time he never plays chords that you've heard before!! Never, will you hear familiar leads!!! He's my favorite musician!!
Anything on this album is gold. Peaches en regalia is one of my favourites. Gumbo Variations is also great. The song you picked here is the only vocal track on the album. Everything else is straight Zappa groove, and great.
Thanks David! Gotta love Zappa!
My life is complete (well almost)..... I was lucky enough to see this live twice.........
... me too 😋 ...
This album was the start of Jazz/Rock Fusion
You guys are on the money. Frank self-described Hot Rats as a "movie for your ears".
@Rossa Sheridan - When anyone gives their personal description of something there is no need for "self" to be added.
Thanks Rossa!
The voice of Captain Beefheart totally unique and Zappas music what more do you need.
A 1971 opinion restated "you get more in 1 Zappa track then most bands can put in an album". Great stuff!
Truth!
Dirty Love a classic
Yeahhh
Captain Beefheart (Don van Vleet) on vocals. Sugarcane Harris on violin.
Zappa always wrote great bass lines. It's almost like having two Zappa lead parts.
I finally fixed my violin today. This was the first riff I picked up to get warmed up again.
Wonderful!
bless you and your program 🥰 ... I have been Zappa fan for half a century !
What a picturesque pair you make.
Yes to the drum and bass... that section four minutes into your video is one of my favourite drum phrases. Of course the guitar solo is pure pleasure.
He’s a composer first and then a guitar player. However I would say it’s time you guys started listening to tracks from Shut Up and Play Your Guitar.
Thanks Barry! Sure we’ll get there soon!
Title track of SUAPYG ranks among my favorite solos. Leaves me with the sheer joy that Frank built a band who could follow an uncompromising solo like that.
Saw Dweezil play this (entire Hot Rats album) right before covid. It was sooper-dope and even had the ratchet parts! You two should totally consider reacting to Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart (produced by Zappa). IT IS OUT THERE. Same era as Hot Rats, too.
Sounds awesome! Thanks!
Rat Tomago from Sheik Yerbouti is a straight up FZ all out guitar jam only to be contended with Black Napkins from Zoot Alures.
Hell yeah! FZ is the best!
Eat that Question from The Grand Wazoo is an amazing instrumental too
Sight After Dark has some Zappa influence in it too
The definitive Black Napkins version is off of Zappa in New York 40th Anniversary. It's 28 minutes long with Eddie Jobson on E-Violin. It's my absolute favorite Zappa song
@KLB3 - How about The Sheik Yerbouti Tango or Heavy Duty Judy on Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar?
It just keeps goinggggggggggggg!!!!!! Making that mean face during the solo!
Once: (at 11:19) once the time you understand Frank Zappa's music, you always feel coming home to him.
Nothing is comparable.
Yes we were in our week teenagers we went down to the Lido hotel because we’re about 45 miles from Los Angeles here in Palmdale California where Frank Zappa and Don grew up and we observed the ladies of the evening or the ladies that would hang out in the hotel ….
A shout out to Sugarcane Harris on the violin
Pre-high school and college were obsessed with Frank’ Zappa and Don van Vliet
..
I told you, you will go from fans to fanatics!!!
Awesome to see you 2 getting more and more into Frank's world of avante garde imagination and more importantly, the "conceptual continuity" of your own experiences in life while listening to almighty ZAPPA. Since you've gotten this far into his music, you must go back to the beginning which is the album FREAK OUT! I would recommend WHO Are The Brain Police? or the original version of Trouble Every Day.
Thanks Kris! Looking forward to diving more into the world of Zappa!
Fired up my Gaia and soloed ALL over that G major section. Fun key to solo in, for sure! 🎵🎶🎹💖
Hell yeah it is!
Love you guys, but shout out to your patrons for their choices! Keep em coming
They never steer us wrong! Thanks Mark!
those cymbals are amazing!
Indeed!
What astounds me is the blending of Zapppas guitar with Jean-Luc Pontys violin.[?]
Willy lyrics by Capt. Beafheart.
It’s Sugarcane Harris on violin
I'm pretty sure the lyrics were Zappa's, but sung by Capt Beefheart!
The violin is Sugarcane Harris.
Don "Sugarcane" Harris also does a great job playing lead blues violin and singing on a cover of Little Richard's "Directly From My Heart To You" on the Weasels Ripped My Flesh album. There is actually no lead guitar, just lead violin.
@Zolar Czakl you’re right. I’d totally forgot about that!
Lol, you finally got it, the lyrics are just the wrapper. 🙏
Thanks Puddin’!
Masterpiece
Zappa had a lot of different elements on his music formula, and one of the most interesting on his work as a composer..

Frank and Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart, were neighbors as teens.
Love it
Don't ever forget: it's with CPT. BEEFHEART (singing) - the guitar you may know... o:)
Oh yeah, you got that absolutely right, it’s all about the music with FZ. Then you have lyrics, quoting the man himself, “to chew on” ;)
100 percent!
Great observations as always
In a perfect world Zappa would've just composed and played guitar solos, but the fickle nature of the marketplace resulted in a growing emphasis on vocals and if you were to watch a full show from the late 70s/80s you would hear mostly vocal material with a few instrumentals and lots of guitar solos.
BTW the rhythm section, Max Bennet & john guerin, played on tons of classic albums from 70s
Yeahhh love hearing him shred, but live hearing his talents expressed in other ways as well
Incredible solo. And think about this. This was in 1969! He didn’t really hit his stride as a soloist until the mid-late 70s. Damn. Plus who has the chops and nerve to put out a song with 10 minutes of wah-wah guitar??
Great album.
Indeed
Also while I’m having my memories of us youngsters being approximately 17 later on the group I was with a guy named Dennis Morris he was a brilliant guitarist although he never became famous he told me that Frank used a lot of Greek nodes and modes in his guitar solos
I’m not smart enough to know what that is but my friend dennis Morris he knew and he was one of the greatest guitarist ever hung around with again he never became famous or rich
That’s great info, thanks Steven!
I just like these people. They're not giving me any new insights into Frank Zappa's music I know it inside and out. I just think these two kids are kind of cool and funny😊
Thanks for watching!
just wait until you get to the song "Yo Mama"
Thanks Chris!
That song is glorious, as is all of Sheik Yerbouti. Now let’s talk about... Leather.
Love this album! Son of Mr. Greenjeans is fire!!✌❤🤘
Thanks for watching Lucas!
So few get Zappa. You two get it!
He’s a genius!
Another GREAT and UNIQUE guitar instrumental ...
RAT TOMAGO off the Sheik Yerbouti album
Thanks Robert!
Some of your answers here, my very best Zappa-Lovelies, are a little bit of...
If you are at home next time, take THIS SONG, RAM IT UP at your Volume, your Stereo Sytem will be able to (and your neighbours will be able too), AND LISTEN AGAIN!
Alone at home... AND DANCE TO IT! (Best Taste: Alone and NAKED!
It will be a little bit of "LSD-At-Your-Own"-Style!!!)
Zappa!
Yeah!
there are different mixes of this floating around out there, with this one the violin, voice and guitar are less clear, and the percussion is much more clear than the mix I have on cd.
Interesting. Is that from different releases of the album?
@@SightAfterDark I don't know how it happened but It's very obvious when I hear it and someone here on youtube knew more about it than I did and commented about it.
@@SightAfterDark Yes, it has been remixed and remastered a few times since the original release. www.lukpac.org/~handmade/patio/vinylvscds/hotrats.html
The first release was mixed by Ainsly Dunsbar, the second release was mixed by frank.
Link is a video about Frank Zappa and the business of music
Thanks!
Love you guys!!
Have you guys ever heard of Soda Stereo? Great Argentinian band. "Profugos" is a good track to start with. ZAPPA is the greatest ever though!
Haven’t heard of them before. Thanks Dee!
If you ever decide to check out Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, as some of your commenters have suggested, I would recommend you marinade in Clear Spot and The Spotlight Kid for a few weeks first, this should prevent mental scarring. 😊
Hah, while I prefer the thornier, more avant-garde Beefheart myself,
those ARE the albums I break others in on to the dear ol' Captain.
Safe as Milk is another; my wife likes that one.
Captain Beefheart on vocals,.
Nice

very good seen you listening to it , i would like you to listen to APOSTROPHE MUSIC WITH JACK BRUCE ON BASS
NO DRUGS.

Beef heart Vocal , Zappa 4 min. guitar ?
Love your videos, but that water pipe looks like it could use some fresh water. Lol
LOL
Castanets?😊
Beefheart was too weird even for Zappa eventually-they fell out in the mid 1970's after doing a tour where Beefheart did little but sit on stage drawing & getting drunk. His albums were even less commercial sounding than Zappa's.
Insane
wow.... way to drive a stake through the heart of ol' Beefheart man.... reduced him to a whacky, sadsack, pathetic alcoholic who died alone..... he's down dude, stop kicking.
show me one man who did what Beefheart did while dealing with the multiple sclerosis that killed him..... and I will show that man the fucking door.... I love Beef man.
I'll stick with my much better image... and final story of how my Cap'n went down with his ship matey... thanks anyway.....
faded like a fucking rock god is supposed to fade away and die on stage... however the fuck he wants too...... remind me not to ask you to write my obituary eh.... sheesh.
sorry about that.... guess you touched a raw nerve.... hard to hear your heroes taking a hit, right?
Dance song
This was recorded in 1969, so it's the oldest Zappa track I think you guys have been exposed to. If I may suggest another track recorded in 1969, although from a different album, please listen to The Little House I Used To Live In. It also has Don Sugarcane Harris on it, which is always a treat, and the piece is a great composition masterfully executed by The Mothers of Invention.
Thanks Marc! Sounds awesome!
Great suggestion! That's "Burnt Weenie Sandwich," boys and girls. Almost any track is a winner on this album, but Little House (all 18:42 of it!) is masterful (and -- mostly -- live!). FZ's brief "interaction" with an audience member at the end is also a classic moment. 👍😂
@@abbazabbado The "interaction" with the audience heckler is infamous and I read something about it either in Frank's book (The Real Frank Zappa Book) or elsewhere. In a nutshell, it happened in Berlin in 1968, where according to Frank there were a number of more militant minded students trying to stir the more relaxed party mood into one of activism. Frank later wrote Holiday In Berlin (with lyrics) due to this experience.
@@marcribe6483 Right you are there, sir. Fortunately, some surreptitious taper back in the day captured a performance of the remarkable band fronted by Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan (Flo & Eddie) wherein 'Holiday in Berlin' was covered (with lyrics) in strictly lo-fi -- but with full "Brectian" theatricality. This stellar performance (though some "fans" may recoil in horror at the Flo & Eddie band, never mind the fillum '200 Motels') was "immortalized" on the FZ 'Beat the Boots' LP entitled 'Freaks & Motherf*#@%!' You can find this track (WITH film from the actual Berlin event . . . at no extra charge!) on YT by searching for "holiday in berlin san francisco" or the more complete cut at "mudshark holiday in berlin". Enjoy! ✌️😎
Oh, and note to the Sight After Dark folks and any other interested parties: Once you've heard/reviewed 'Waka/Jawaka' (from album of same), 'Inca Roads' (from 'One Size Fits All'), 'Peaches en Regalia' (from the above 'Hot Rats' -- NOTE: It's more than 50 YEARS OLD!) and 'Zombie Woof' (from 'Overnight Sensation'), and have gotten to know them pretty well, do a YT search for 'Berklee Zappa Tribute' and prepare to be AMAZED! A truly international collection of "kids" from the school -- none of them born within decades of when these tunes were first released -- absolutely blow the doors off this brilliantly arranged medley. Never fails to bring tears to this old Zappaphile's eyes. Deepest respect to this new generation, and HIGHLY recommended. 👍😲✨
🔥🐀🐀🥵🎵
For sure!
Best version of this song is from the Live at the Fillmore album.
But what about the amazing Beefheart vocal
If I had money I would patron you, you get the 70s. I would say listen to fz, sexual harassment in the workplace. It has to be an x rated instrumental
Keep well from England
It's all good! If you're ever in a position to throw $1/month our way, you know we'll appreciate it and it'll help us to continue making the videos. But were just glad you're watching at all, and we hope we can bring you some happiness! Keep well from USA
I love Zappa but never been a fan of this album .. apart from "Peaches En Regalia". Check out "What's New in Baltimore"

Why does everyone reach for a drink at the start of each video? Most of the reactors just copy each other. A sign of the times.

Your lady friend looks bored stiff.
I have a few Zappa CDs, I just don't get the appeal. "Joe's Garage" has some catchy songs but otherwise it's all sarcasm and jazz noodling, not my bag.
