  • Recently ran across another Oldsmobile in the yard. This time it was 1970 Olds Delta 88 four door. The last Delta 88 more door I ran across had a big block 455 under the hood which I snagged on a half off sale. I wasn't so lucky with this one as it had a small block under the hood. This one did however have front disk brakes which I think are somewhat rare for this year. Overall it was pretty rough from sitting out in the elements for probably a few decades. Being a vinyl top car, the roof rust was there as well as in all the usual spots. Hopefully some good parts get saved before this old girl ultimately meets the crusher.

Whoa Nelley, Delta 88 and used to be great. Yup, this sat for a long time and just languished. You can tell it was old looking in 1990 when it was parked. I'm going to say a grandson got this from his grandparents and that's why you have the aftermarket radio. Then something went wrong and it got parked.
We got the tag, we can brag: 70 for 1970 model year, 35469 for Oldsmobile (3) Delta 88 (54) four door sedan (69), X for Fairfax, KS assembly, 323 for Blue interior trim, 20 for Azure Blue lower exterior paint, C for Blue vinyl top, and 03B for the second week of March 1970 production. Likely a 350 Oldsmobile V8 in there. I'll bet that engine still runs. Oldsmobile engines are very strong and among my favorites, next to a Pontiac V8.
We got the VIN, we win: 3 for Oldsmobile, 54 for Delta 88, 69 for four door sedan, 0 for 1970 model year, X for Fairfax, KS assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Fairfax, KS plant that made this car operated until early 1987 and Fairfax II now operates today. Yup, no VIN, no win. LOL.
Whoa Nelley, 1970 and gotta go. Delta 88 soon to meet the final fate. That's it, time to quit. Made in the land of wheat and now time to admit defeat. Olds Rocket is soon to be out of pocket. VIN code "X" is a big mess. Vinyl top took a big flop. B body looking very shoddy. Going to be flat and that's that. We got the tag, and we can brag. Otherwise, the Google Man is sad. We got the VIN and we win, and if you didn't that would be a sin. Going to get squished and the Rocket faithful, perhaps Benny, many here, and you bet your bottom dollar the Google Man is going to be very, very, very, very pissed.

I was in the Air Force, stationed in West Germany in 1979. We had family coming to visit us for a week in July and needed a car that would hold five people for sightseeing. I bought a 70 Olds four door Delta 88 with 455 from another airman that was returning to the states and was leaving the car behind. ($900) It ran on 7 cylinders as the left rear cylinder had no compression. However, still plenty of power to haul all of us on sightseeing tours through all the big and little roads. The steering got a work out on some of those little roads going through little burgs. It was medium blue with blue cloth interior. It had well over 100,000 miles but ran great with the exception of the slightly rough idle because of the dead cylinder. I think the late sixties ad very early 70s were the best years for GM

For a Delta 88, the car was nicely optioned for what it was offered! You know, the header panel makes for a good wall art and not busted up like most of them are. Disc brakes in 1970 is fancy indeed! I know Ford also offered front discs as an option before making them standard in 1972!
I hope a lot of parts get saved off of it!

That twin-stripe tire on the left rear is the original spare. My parents '70 Cutlas Supreme SX had those tires when new.

They used a plastic filler under a vinyl top because you wouldn’t see it and lead on the uncovered top.

I know that on Chryslers w/ vinyl tops, they didn't use lead but instead used a plastic filler. It was rough under there.

Hi Benny. Indeed, the disc brakes are worth saving, they are rare, Oldsmobile had a unique design. The spindles and hubs especially. As you said, GM divisions back then had their own ideas of brake design until the consolidations of 1971. Rotors are no longer available new but a 2006 Cadillac CTS brake rotor can be machined to fit the separate hub. In the earlier years, the wheels were disc brake specific. 1965 through 1968 I believe, small 14-inch rims were standard, the discs needed 15-ince wheels. That left rear tire hails back to 1971-72! Even a 350 2-BBL was not too bad an engine for 1970, a decent cam with a nice exhaust and intake system would run pretty decent thanks to its lower compression pistons on today's gasoline mixes. Not too sure on the plastic filler on the roof, our 1972 wagon has lead filler on the seams, maybe GM used plastic on the vinyl top cars. I hate vinyl roof coverings, they make a horrid mess out of what may have been a restorable car, be it whatever make and model. Quick edit! The fuel tanks are also another unobtanium item. If the unit is reasonably solid, then yes, it could be cleaned and coated inside to be serviceable once again.

Olds Buick and Chevrolet Pontiac. I will have to ask a couple of people who I know but back then there was a saying that they had to do that would tell you what they did at a salvage yard to get and find parts they needed for a certain year and make of cars. Yes sir I believe that you are right with the wheels.

Had a 74 once was the best car I ever owned until I switched to Toyota in 2018 now the Carolla wins the day the only downside to the Carolla or any modern car is everything is plastic unlike the 88 which was one of the last cars built with metal exteriors and it ran like a tank
