Fish Passage Improvements to Columbia and Snake River Dams

  • Recent tests show fish passage improvements at all eight federal dams on the lower Columbia and Snake rivers have dramatically increased survival rates for juvenile salmon and steelhead listed under the Endangered Species Act. The Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bonneville Power Administration collaborate on implementing these improvements at the federal hydropower projects. As a result, fish survival has climbed to more than 96 percent at some dams, surpassing federal performance standards. BPA ratepayers are a primary funding source for the fish passage work that is one part of a larger effort to protect salmon and steelhead survival at all phases of their lifecycle.

Improvements at the dams have made a huge difference for salmonid survival in the river system. Now we need policymakers to start focusing on the ocean, where they are struggling.

Ultimately you can choose between sustainable salmon populations and huge hydro dams. I don't think you can have both.

They should remove all dams for the rivers. It's terrible what the government did the king salmon fishery. So sad!!!!!

Breach the dam! Our Southern resident orcas of the Salish Sea are starving and it is not even economically sustainable.

Incremental fixes have done little to make dams fish friendly as you claim. You are to be commended for making improvements, but the statistics on returning adult salmon and steelhead show them slipping toward extinction. As things are now most fish in the basin are of hatchery origin. The Columbia River once produced the millions of salmon, naturally. Stop tinkering around the edges and JUST FIX IT!

    dismantle that dam !!
its best long term solution for the hole river eco-system

The Columbia river is over Damned !! We need power but we don't need as many dams as we have and we need it to flow like a river not a lake. The only reason the dams are making any of these improvements is because their hand is being forced !! The Pacific Northwest has lost some of the greatest fish runs in the world in the name of hydropower. Grand Coulee no fish Passage !!

"Trust us, the fish are fine" says the stake holders of the dam.

Some of you posters below should be more concerned about the northern pike working their way down from Lake Roosevelt.

yeah, right! it's safer, better than 10, 20, 30 years ago... what about 60+ years ago? not? then how about taking out the dams! Yes, dismantle them and take out all the man-made hazards!

OK, so tear down the Dam ? What about all the people that rely on the Dam for electricity, drinking water and farm irrigation ? The ignorance of EnvironMENTALIST's is disturbing.

There are other dams from which you will get electricity LSRDs are a part of the Columbia River dam system. Really, the water is not going to be gone when the dam is breached, so the is still water to drink and farmers just have to get a little longer hose to get water from the river, ya know , like before there were dams there. Not disturbing, just simple logic.

Envinronmentalists don't care about that. They don't like reliable, abundant, and affordable electricity or water because they want people to be poor. They don't want jobs, especially manufacturing jobs again because their goal is poverty.
