    I love comping vocals. It takes so much of the pressure off trying to get a perfect take. That is one of the best tips I've got out of your videos.

      that is exactly what I thought. I'd even go further, using it to glitch between different feelings

    I hung up some blankets behind my microphone and it has made such a difference in my recordings! Thanks Colin! P.s. what do you think about the idea of having your mic in a padded box on a stand with one side open so you can sing into it? That's what I've done as a shortcut to treating the whole room. Works well with blankets behind.

  • @anthonycrothers_Photography

    Excellent! Great workflow for comping vocals, will definitely be using this approach. Thanks for sharing, really appreciated. 😎😎😎

    Great one Colin. I haven't watched your earlier videos of this series because I was busy shooting video for my latest song and my time is now very occupied in reorganising my CZcams music channel. Thanks for the great labour you are putting into this very difficult to understand field of audio🙏.

    Comping trick I use: record all your takes on one track, split it into regions, then choose whichever take for that split region you want. No copy pasting or multiple tracks involved.

    • @ErikArchbold
      @ErikArchbold Před 3 dny

      Yeah, I was wondering about this Colin - why don't you use this trick that @michaelkoykka3149 refers to. I also discovered this technique a few weeks ago - that in cycle mode you can create multiple takes on one track, then just go through them, and at points where i want to use a different take, I can cut it, then in the next region choose the take i want to come in next. I'm assuming you're aware of this method but don't use it because of certain potential downsides? Thanks for all your insights! @TheBandGuide

    When I record my band mates or other musicians when they say to me they’re ready to try a first time practice along with the audio we have I always hit record without them realising m, cos more often than not that fist trial is the best take they play as it’s usually most natural, best feel, best feel. When they know they’re being recorded they’re thinking to much about playing it correctly and loses so much feel or becomes to static and rigid. Most of all the majority suffer from Red light fever and it can all go out of the window.

      If you're hitting the notes, then it's just a matter of getting better at recording & mixing it. If you're not hitting the notes... then you need to be honest with yourself and decide if you need singing lessons or an outside singer. Good luck.

    More like comping it 20 times 😂 my memory is the size of a xmass cracker joke so I struggle with recording vocals. Need lyrics written where I can see them and securely stuck up. The amount of paper crinkles I used to get when I held the paper or the times it dropped down halfway through cos I didn’t stick it up properly.
    I m used to being on stage too so I have to deliberately stop myself being performer too much and moving around 😂

    Ahoy Colin, quick question do you always Record Vocals in Mono (then copy them to pan them left and right) rather than recording them in Stereo?? Or when adding ghost tracks, that may or may not have added grit...lol.
    Another great video.
    Thanks for all your help.

    I`m confused. My Shure 58 mic is recording my vocal track in mono (via scarlett 2i2). Apparently it is correct to record vocals in mono? Your vocal tracks seem to have two green bars within them so, they are stereo? Thank you (I enjoyed the video).

    • @waltercoyle6393
      @waltercoyle6393 Před rokem

      Hi Fred,
      He is using two mics because he is recording both this video and the song on the same track.
      Your SM 58 will record in mono. What you are doing is correct.
      Keep at it and best of luck.
