  • OSTRÓDA history.
Ok. 1270 The Teutonic Knights built a wooden watchtower. A settlement was established around it. In 1329, it obtained city rights under the name of Osterode. Later, a brick castle was built, which gained the status of the seat of the commandry.
From 1440, Ostróda was a member of the Prussian Union. After the Thirteen Years' War, the city remained in the Teutonic state. In 1525, it became part of Ducal Prussia. In 1628, Ostróda was conquered by the Swedes. In 1788, the city was again destroyed by a great fire.
In January 1945, Ostróda was captured by the Soviet army. 60% of the city's buildings were destroyed during the fights. In the 1970s, the Teutonic castle was rebuilt. Currently, it houses the Museum in Ostróda. Since 1999, the city has been the capital of the poviat in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Watch the Poland series from a bird's eye view on our channel
