  • In the void of the anti-coreward periphery, the uncharted system of Vigil hung in forgotten silence for centuries.
    Until recently.
Deep space reconnaissance probes have just detected high powered, encrypted transmissions coming from a moon of the 6th planet.
Both the Free World's League and the Magistracy of Canopus have deployed rapid response forces to claim the system as their own - excited about the prospect of a functioning HPG or some other lostech from humanity's past.

In a campaign our group did we house ruled that fighters took 2 turns off board to reorient before they could come in for another run. This kept them from dominating completely, though they were still pretty powerful. It also made them more survivable, which was important in campaign terms. Great report!

Hey guys. I've been watching your videos for about a year and a half. I haven't seen them all and I haven't watched them in order but this is the coolest setup I've ever seen for Battletech. This is my favorite episode/battle for 2 main reasons. 1) I was the kid that loved planes and wanted to become a pilot (which I did). So I was the pain in the a$$ that made my buddies learn the mixed weapons rules for Aerotech and Mechwarrior. 2) The Free Worlds League was my favorite house. Of the 5-7 of us that played, we all had our favorites, I was the only one that chose House Marik. So ultimately we just made a Merc unit. This was when the game was new (We started playing in '87 and stopped in '92 when we all left home to go to college) and was pre-clan when we started playing. We found out REAL fast that although Mechs were the kings of the battlefield, old doctrines never die. He who controlled the skies, controlled the ground. My fighters wreaked HAVOC on mechs so we had to adopt a few house rules to make it work.
One of them was that my fighters could only make attack runs once every 3 turns. It took 2 turns to turn around and align to set up an "attack run". If dogfights took place, we had a side map we conducted them on.
Another was that Riflemen were specifically Anti-aircraft Mechs and they always had the option of facing the fighter, even if they had exhausted their movement points. It added a new element and even though it affected me, I thought it was a good rule.
A third rule was that the "control rolls" were reduced by 1. I thought, and my friends agreed, that seasoned pilots who couldn't control their planes shouldn't be flying them and failing those control rolls and crashing into the terrain was a stupid way to go out for simply trying to make a basic turn that ANY pilot could make. It was still possible (and yes, dice got thrown across the room more than once) but it was more "realistic" when we decreased the control "checks" by 1.
Some rules we used I never knew if they were in the book or if my friend that ran it made them up. One of these was that the fighters got an extra 3 points of heat reduction from their weapons for the air cooling effect.
Anyway, sorry for such a long post but this brought back so many good memories of playing in my buddy's garage growing up. I have some stories of campaigns and games! Thanks so much for doing this and for finally putting fighters on the board. I really hope you do it again. I watch these and picture these battles in my head like a movie. I'd love to play just one game with you guys just to relive the fun we had as kids!

Kearny-Fuchida Drives are the FTL for battletech. they require the jumping ship to be outside the stellar gravity well of a star system, points at the zenith (top most) or Nadir (lowest most) points of the stellar gravity wells. they are able to jump the ship up to 30 lightyears per jump, and recharge using a solar sail to collect energy from the local star, ranging from 3 days to a week depending on the star. these points are also the reason that travel takes a while in universe as the dropships must travel for days weeks or months depending on the star (lonest distance i heard of was 90 days. there are high risk points deeper in system that can cut the time drastically, but they are hard to predict, called pirate points as theyre usually used by raiders or invaders to either bypass jump point stations and defenses as well as reduce the time the defenders have to mobilise and intercept. it also could spell total disaster for the invaders as they might just blow up from failed jump

Love the video. OMG, Aerospace fighters seem so complicated, I knew there was a reason why I never play with them. Even the simplified Alpha Strike rules are still complex and confusing. It was nice to see it played out to kind of give me an idea of how it works, and also to show that I'm not the only one who finds this stuff complicated.

Great fodder for stories you might hear in a spaceport bar.

I think there was also an incident during the FedCom Civil War where it was implied that the EM wave from an arriving Jumpship showed up in the destination system WAY before the ship in question initiated the jump. I think Interstellar Players 2 explained it as the result of one of the super-jumps the Blakists did, or one of the other weird hyperspace things the Manei Domini used to get up to.

Hell of a fight, Battletech is a game of swings and roundabouts for sure. It was neat to see the evolution of the Aerospace tactics from the fedcom/jade falcon Campaign to here. Interesting to see the escalation both bringing Aero assets, one of those cases of either you both do or someone is at a serious material disadvantage, though with the anti-fighter formations evolving that may not be true for much longer, now to catch the more recent ones and see if that thought holds true. Thank you for the good games to be able to watch.

The 'Jihad Conspiracies' sourcebook did mention a couple of alleged instances of ships mis-jumping through time; they even posited (though this idea was later shot down) that a future version of the Word of Blake learned how to do it on purpose and started sending troops back in time to bolster the Jihad, explaining how the WoB was able to pull such a huge army out of thin air. Thankfully, they didn't go with that explanation, but theoretically something like it is on the table.

It is Wednesday! A DFA Wargaming Day! The best day! Always looking forward to DFA Wargaming days!
The "catgirl" thing is semi-canon. It was a picture of a "lady of the knight" with felinoid cybernetics installed, to service those who have that sort of fetish. But that is pretty much the only case, as cybernetics are very expensive. And it is a hard sell to convince an owner of a prostitution service to foot the bill for body modifications that extreme. Certainly no fighting forces made of "catgirls." It has just been blown into meme proportions over the years. Aaron winning initiative rolls, and landing headshots is more commonplace than finding a "catgirl" in the Magistracy of Canopus.
Using the Kearny-Fuchida drive in Battletech for going far distances does not really work like FTL travel in other science fiction universes. Mishaps with the Jumpship usually ends up in catastrophe: Wrecking the ship, or placing it in a location that it should not be. As far as I know, there are no instances of displaced time or warp bubble shenanigans. However, there is lore documentation of jumps going awry. Outbound Light interloping to Clan space and setting Operation Revival into action, or the jump that took place in the book Far Country, and encountering the tetatae(proto-sapient race of bird people).

    • @stormcrow28
      @stormcrow28 Před rokem +2

There was a Mechwarrior 2E adventure that had an Aegis class cruiser in it with an experimental 40 light year jump drive called the Manassas. When the jump drive engaged, it caught the cruiser in a time bubble that lasted until the late 3050s. After the ship is fought over by Clan Ghost Bear, onboard time lost SLDF forces and Comstar agents, the ship is scuttled but later reclaimed by the Word of Blake who uses it to build the new one shot super jump FTL drives that can go a couple of thousand light years in a jump.
This new super jump destroys the K-F core, but it also leads to new research that creates the Fortress Wall defense tech as well. So it's possible for a ship or a signal to be potentially "frozen" during a misjump, whether by accident or even intent.

Jumping in Battletech is explicitly not explained for the purposes of shenanigans lol. There's a gimmick like, the further out a jump is coming in, then the longer it can be observed at the exit point until the moment of the jump. So if you want military surprise, you have to jump from next door or you might get discovered. Even though jumps are instantaneous, people going through the jump lose time even tho they don't experience it. Then there's the HPG Blackout and the Fortress Republic, which both screw with jump systems lol.

Actually, in one of the novels from the start of the Civil War era, jumping is explained in some detail in that the size of the emergence field is proportionate to the size of the incoming ship. The WoB super jumps made an exceptionally large emergence field when they destroyed the LAS Arthur Steiner Davion (?) Fox class corvette over Coventry. From memory so don't quote me too badly. :)

Great video and awesome terrain . The amount of ones and twos you guys managed to play illustrates why
I'm not big on the idea of "pilot dice'. IMHO the way you divide the damage up into separate rolls is an
improvement over the standard game but the pilot dice bring you right back to the same thing . Using
"pilot dice" in BAGOAC (classic) might cause a riot in our local groups so we can't experiment with them .
Great to see some Aerospace action in the mix . MVP might just b the 2 Schrecks .
