  • Brownsville is a town in The Rio Grande Valley that is right on the border of Texas and Mexico that's known for its rich cultural fusion. While down in the RGV, Shane visited Vera’s Backyard Bar-B-Que to taste their signature, authentically cooked barbacoa.

When I was growing up in South Texas the family routine was get at 6 am get ready for Mass after service was over head out to local meat market and buy 2 PD's of barbacoa and corn tortillas my mom would make the flour tortillas and salsa then watch some Johnny canales on t.v. you. Grab ure tacos on the go everybody busy doing something mom's going to HEB my dad is fire up his BBQ pit to cook some fajitas and chicken it's about 2 o'clock it's time to watch the Cowboys play were not the Walton's but life was not so busy that's what makes Texas so special from Brownsville to the Oklahoma border family, food, and football, that's Texas !!

This is the traditional way that barbecue was done in Texas, where the word bbq "pit" comes from (because it used to be a literal pit in the ground), and also where the word "barbecue" comes from (literally evolved from the word barbacoa). There are pictures of old school barbecuers cooking in a hole in the ground before the steel tank smokers, and before the indoor brick pits. So those of you barbecue enthusiasts out there need to check this place out. This is part of Texas history.

You should check your taste buds on your tongue and ask yourself a simple question: is there a faster way to clog my arteries?
