The Medusa from this film has yet to be beaten, even with CGI
Genuinely scary, with those sound affects it became terrifying. I saw this in the theater, I think I was 12. Medusa was the scariest part of the film. My Dad had this cluster of rattle snake tails from some awful souvenir from a trip to the Grand Canyon. You get where I'm goin with this? Dad's love to scare their kids, especially when you have the means provided with an awful trinket from the Grand Canyon.
TROG was more emotive .
I was 10 and saw it in the theatre too☹️.. My Great Grandmother told my mom not to ever take me to another movie EVER again.. Nothing on earth terrified me like the Gorgon Medusa☠️🌚☠️!!! I wasn't afraid of Dracula, Frankenstein, not the Mummy.. The Howling scared me a little until I figured out to run like hell while the werewolf transforms instead of just standing there petrified with fear like Dee Wallace's smh ass☹️☹️.. True fear of the dark, basements, garages and turning corners too quickly became the norm for me for many years.. That was in 1981.. The next time I saw the inside of a movie theatre as in 1987 when I was 16 to see Fatal Attraction and The Untouchables (duoble-feature).. That is how terrified I was of Medusa.. No other iterations of the Gorgon scared me.. It did however start my facination with Greek Mythology which garnered me many A+ grades on book-reports and other school related projects..
You are spot on i agree with you 100% , C G I that stands for Cheap Garbage Indeed
💯
I can tell you as a 12 year old boy at the time the most memorable thing about this movie was Judi Bowker
Yes. One of the most naturally beautiful women I've ever laid eyes on
Yes and praise for the BBC2 today for not cutting the rude awakening of her scene , when they never did before pollical correct set in .
Agreed. Her and Harry were a gorgeous couple 😍.
Clash of the Titans and Jason and the Argonauts are the best "ancient greek" adventure movies
I used to alway watch Jason when it came on TV.
Loved the skeleton fight!
That's not saying much as they are not the best films. These films are just ok.
oh yeah... and they are still great to watch
True dat.
When this movie came out in 1981, the theater was so crowded I had to stand up watching it.first and best version.
this is one of those movies where i dont listen to other opinions of it. it was amazing and beautiful and i was 7 so this is LITERALLY what opnened me up to books, mythologies, dungeons and dragons, etc. this movie is pure magic.
I was about 4 at the time and same. Not to mention that it was on cable *all the time*, so it really truly defined my mental image of fantasy-adventures-with-swords, rather than a more stereotypical medieval setting.
The film grossed $70 million dollars world wide. In 1981 that was a big hit. The stop motion still looks amazing and a lot of fun to watch. Its title Clash of the Titans and the phrase Release the Kraken are now a part of our pop culture.
I watched so many times I guess on hbo way back in early 80s
My dad and me went to the cinema to see this movie loved it.Calibos was bloody terrifying lol.
Same happend to me I was scared of calibos face
The Stygian Witches spooked me more than Calibos, lol.
@@BlackieNuff Especially after the only way to defeat the Kraken solution.. A suicide mission to say the least.. I would have rather just walked up to the Kraken and slap the shit out of him than to go where no man has ever returned seeking the head of the Gorgon Medusa.. Pro: Hopefully swallowed whole.. Con: The horror of looking accidently at Medusa and the excruciating pain associated with being turned to STONE from the inside out... And, all for a Princess that you will never even get to hug.. No Perseus, you are on your own.. Good Luck Buddy I'm out see ya!!☠️💀☠️!!
I'm actually a really friendly Demi-God when you get to know me!!
Medusa was awesome 👏 miss these kind of movies.
Great movie for kids back in the early 80s. Can't believe its almost 40 years old.
I'll take a lot of Ray's stop motion over CGI any day of the week.
I love Clash of the Titans, it was such a great and so entertaining film! Ray Harryhausen is a god of animation!
This movie captured my imagination as a boy, was crazy about it for the whole year, this and Raiders of Lost Ark of course. Wish I kept my toys :-( The Medusa scene was my favorite, so creepy and tense.
I was too young to understand that I wouldn't die looking at her, too. I covered my eyes for years 🤣
This was my favorite movie first years. " when they called "for the release of the Kraken" was my favorite saying. Still is even in these days. I simply loved this movie. I saw it so many times. Burgess Meredith was outstanding. Harry Hamlin so handsome. The girl Andromeda was beautiful too. I was hoping for a sequel. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🍿
Agreed. Those witches and the eye...
My favorite lines were Burgess Merideths explanation of Medusa once being a beautiful woman who made love with Poseidon in the Temple of Afrodite.. And, that goddess became so ANGRY😠😈😠 that she transformed Medusa into an apparition cso Horrible, that any living creature no matter how great in size or power that looked at her.. Would be turned into stone..🌚☠️💀🌚.. They said that this movie was for kids🤔🤔.. Yeah, to terrify kids out of their minds..
@@thomastuthill5276 Witches: How to kill the Kraken?? There is a way PERHAPS..🤔🤔 But a way even more dangerous than the Kraken itself..☹️☹️ The head of Medusa the Gorgon!! One look at the face of Medusa will turn all living things to STONE no matter how huge and powerful.. Your only chance of defeating the Kraken.. A TITAN AGAINST A TITAN!! But first you must win Medusa's head.. How?? She's not going to give it to you as a 🎁 present🌚.. Seek Medusa on the Isle of the dead... At the very edge of the Underworld!!! After hearing that.. Perseus would have been on his own..🤔🤔 No amount of 💰💵💰 money could have got me to continue that suicide mission.. To hell with saving Andromeda.. She would have been a sacrificed soul.. The city destroyed and me getting out of dodge☹️☹️..
My favorite Hollywood moment was when Ray Harryhausen spoke at our film school in the late seventies and I asked him if he was going to make a sequel to "Jason and the Argonauts" since it was hinted at at the end of the film. A couple of years later I get an invitation from Ray Bradbury to attend a screening of this film at the Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences where master Bradbury introduced master Harryhausen to Fay Wray for the first time. What a wonderful thing to witness.
My mothers favourite film as a child. She loved this film. It is still fantastic. A lot of legendary actors in this and it will never be topped.
This is my father's favourite film, and one of the few I actually enjoy about Greek Mythology alongside Troy and Jason and The Argonauts
You didn't mention Judi Bowker! I don't recall watching this over and over because I wanted to see Laurence Olivier. 😅
Too bad they didn’t stay true to Greek nudes.
You speak the truth. She's totally the reason I watched when I was a kid, and last week.. lol
I think the content creator may have a proclivity toward the same sex.
@@theubercaste She is nude in the bathing scene
@@fellowcitizen well yeah we also see perseus' mothers breast after argos gets destroyed
This movie is why I got 100% on every single test in my 8th grade Greek mythology class, with only opening the book once. The textbook for the class was Greek Mythology by Edith Hamilton. I think I still have it. It follows this movie very closely, so I'm not sure why Harry Hamlin had a problem. There were some minor changes, the flying sandals and such. But those were covered in the lectures. My teacher thought I was a god-damned genius. I never told him that I memorized this movie word for word, when I was seven years old. Showtime played it over and over, all day long, for weeks. Back then, cable was Showtime and HBO. They both ran the same couple movies all day long. I think the other was the Empire Strikes Back, I'm almost sure.
The three original Star Wars movies had not been released for broadcast/cable tv back then. I don't think they ever have now I think about it.
"For ages 14+"
I went to the theaters to watch this when I was 4years old. Absolute classic film. And those toys? The Kraken is still one of my most prized possessions.
I had one of those, but I think broke off the arms or something.
DariusQ
Liar, they would not let a "4 year-old" into the theatre!
@@redblade8160Sure they would. I've been to theaters where infants are allowed in and had to be kicked out because they wouldn't stop crying.
@@dariusq8894
Did they kick you out for crying?
I loved the Stygion Witches. The actresses were top notch. The women were very well nuanced in this film. I also loved the girl talk scene with the goddesses. Hera after hearing about her husband's toga chasing seemed genuinely curious when she asked Thetis, "...did he succeed??".
I was five when I saw this...that Medusa gave me nightmares...when we got the book, My brother would open to the picture of her and chase me around the house. Epic film and memories.
lol I was 5 too and my brother would do those same things. You will remember Ulyssess 31 and Dungeons and Dragons too
@@lamueldagon7618 I started with the basic d and d box set. Do you remember the Disney film Black Hole...I like the music from that film and it was very dark for Disney.
@@jamesaleman Oh yeah,it's funny you say to that. The Black hole was well scary it was not a kids film at all.Lol.Did you ever watch Dragonslayer 1981? that's another of the 80s dark Disney/paramount collaboration just like Blackhole.
@@lamueldagon7618 I don't remember that one. It's amazing what was 'kid friendly' in the 80's
One can never get enough about the Great Ray Harryhausen: single-handedly did the fantastic and magnificently dramatic creations for decades of wondrous productions.
Only him.
One man!
One incredibly brilliant, charming, humble man.
If it was a Ray Harryhausen movie, you knew you were in for a magical experience like nothing you'd ever seen before!
Creatures the pathos of which could make an audience weep.
When I watched this in the cinema in 1981, someone yelled out “Turn Around!” during Andromeda’s bathing scene (where she has her back to the camera). That heckling is still memorable to this day.
Lol. Such prudes.
@@theubercaste : It was the opposite. Heckler wanted to see her breasts (she had her back to camera, he wanted her to turn around to show her chest to camera).
I remember reading the Alan Dean Foster novelization after seeing the movie. As a kid I had the big Mattel Godzilla and my neighbor had the Kraken, and we used to have them battle each other in the ponds behind our houses.
I must have watched this movie a couple hundred times as a teenager.
I saw it at the theater and have absolutely loved it ever since.
Malcolm McDowell as Perseus!! Can you imagine?!? I adore McDowell, but I just can't imagine this film with anyone but Harry Hamlin. He WAS Perseus. 😁👏👏👏
I got to see this in theater, I was 9 years old. I still love it, I own it on DVD. Magical, exciting, superbly cast, and Ray Harryhausen's creations are glorious.
I was obsessed with the Classical Period when I was in middle school! Was 13 when the flic came out & fell in love with it!
*"Hello There! This movie was absolutely fantastic!"*
I was 7 when my dad took me to the cinema to see this, I absolutely loved it and I still remember that trip better than most since.
Gosh! Even a broke clock is right twice a day. Siskel & Ebert finally got something right...this movie is AWESOME. Harry Hamlin seems born to play this character.
My Dad and I watched this film the day before my family went on holiday to Malta in the summer of 1981 where most of this film was made. What a magical summer that was
Medusa was far scarier than the remake
Im only 23 but Im glad I had grown up seeing this film with my mom and being amazed and scared by the practical effects. Then later on feeling meh with the remake
The incomparable Sir Laurence Olivier as Zeus was perfect casting.
A genius. I had the pleasure of meeting Ray in 2002 at the BFI
There is still something magical about Stop motion
Knowing that Beverly was a great lover of the classics, I can't help but think that he wrote himself in as Eamon the playwright, and a kind of British theater love letter to Greek theater.
Great throwback to my childhood. Loved this movie at 10. Although I was shocked (titillated??) to see a nursing breast.
Bubo was boss. Kaliban’s nose reminded me of my uncle’s.
So many great nuances.
This movie was one of my favorite theatrical experiences as a teen. Just a grand old fashioned adventure with loads of eye candy (including Harry Hamlin, LOL). Marvelous creatures, cast, makeup, costumes, sets, and music. Calibos was a fantastic villain, and of course Medusa was so fierce and sinister! And I loved the Kraken, such a fearsome monster. Mr. Harryhausen is a legend.
This is one of those movies I watched MANY times as a kid. I’ve got some major nostalgia for this movie.
I've fond memories in childhood because of this film, and as such It still has a magic all of it's own.🙂
I have nothing but fond memories of this movie. I was a child when this came out. I had the metal clash of the Titans lunchbox. I carry that thing to school for years and years until it finally rusted out. It’s true the movie and it’s effects did not age well. But it’s still a wonderful movie to watch. The story is good and for me it really takes me back.
They clash of the Titans book that is mentioned in the video can be found here on CZcams and audio form. So if anyone is interested in listening to it just type in clash of the Titans audiobook and it will appear. Enjoy
Nice video. I watched CotT in theatres as a small child. Loved it. Rewatched it last year and it's still great fun - excellent cast, well-paced, good (if dated) special effects and an amazing score.
True, Olivier and Maggie Smith put in great performances... and yet they were upstaged by a mechanical owl. Bubo is my favorite part of them film. He, in a way, gave us some insight into the relationship between Zeus and Athena and how she is able to defy him with no repercussions (even when he practically begs her to give Perseus her owl). The writers really did their homework.
Absolutely Love this film. Amazing this got made in ‘81. Thankfully for us!
I loved this film.' Medusa' was really scary.
I hated the remake because I had grown up watching this version. I enjoy the slow pacing, magical prescience.
I saw this when I was a boy with my father and brother. The following week we also saw Raiders of the lost ark. It was a fun movie. To bad they didn't make a second film. Years ago I bought the DVD. I saw the remake and its sequel but it's the old stop motion effects in the original is definitely what makes the film great. Having Arnold in it would have been interesting, years earlier he did play as Hercules even though they had his voice dubbed and now you can get to actually hear him speak in Hercules in New York film.
I saw this movie back in the 80s with my dad. Amazing memories
Yet another movie I'm surprised you haven't reviewed . . . yet! I'm a big fan of this movie. I was a five/six year old living in Sicily at the time. I remember watching it then. Then, I actually went into a movie store sometime in the 2000's on the first day they released it on DVD! I don't go into movie stores that often.
I certainly loved the movie, and was a fan of it because I first saw it as a youth while living in Sicly; but, since then, I got into comparative mythology and Biblical archaeology more so than I ever imagined I would when young. When really young, like junior high, and maybe just a little younger, I was kind of attracted to mathematics. I still am, and, as far as I'm concerned, I've come full circle with world mythology. It would take a lot to surprise me there. But new details are always welcome!
Anyways, Sir James Frazer, back in the late 1800s to early 1900s wrote "The Golden Bough." He treats religion from a magic perspective. One of the major things going on in the Old Testament that few realize is the sweeping away of magic, for a one god(and multiple gods for one god). He also kind of hits on a pre-male god Earth goddess period. He does most of this by an extrapolation from his contemporary folk tales. I found just a few years ago, a Robert Graves "The Greek Myths." The title sounds like an encyclopedia, but if you read it, you quickly realize it is much better read than that, and it proves Sir James Frazer's "The Golden Bough" in spades. Almost every chapter for a thousand pages proves the female Earth Goddesses and the use of magic. Most people watching Clash of the Titans probably don't see this.
The Earth goddesses are demonized and relegated to a subordinated detail in the Zeus mythology - hence the Medussa(for which the Sicilians are famous for; we have medussa's hanging in our backyard that we got from Sicily), and the three blind witches. The Earth goddesses comes in threes often times - for the three seasons, and the three phases of the moon. There's a ton of three some goddesses in Greek mythology - the three fates, the three sirens(actually, I think the Homer epic "Odysseus" has two sirens. The evolution of the going from splitting the yearly seasons from two, to three, to four is reflected in Greek mythology)
Perseus, the horse is associated with the change from three to four seasons and the chimera - a composite beast, or a calendar beast, where each season is represented by an animal. There's also a Belleraphon which is another version of the Perseus killing the Chimera.
I should say more about Sir James Frazer's "The Golden Bough." In it he shows that a puppet king is put in place on a yearly basis, and is sacrificed on a yearly bases. Well, this is what happened in the Earth Goddess times(bronze age). And that the Greek mythology proves this.
A fun & enjoyable mythological adventure. Ray Harryhausen was a genius!
The last drive in movie theater - a fine summer evening - my old volks bug - "Clash of the Titans" and "Final Countdown" double feature - The best times ever at the movies, though I didn't know it!
Who doesn't still say, "Release the Kraken!" at appropriate times? Pat Roach was also the iconic Gen. Kael in Willow.
It was great, great work even without CGI.I still enjoy watching it.
I love this movie. I remember watching RH movies on tv as a kid. They fueled my imagination and are truly magical.
I remember I chose to see this movie over Raiders of the Lost Ark and then saw Raiders later. That was a time my dad started to let me go to the movies more and it was a great time to be alive.
Fans please share these all over your social media. I don’t normally do this but a channel that does this type of work deserves more attention.

I love this film. I still own it and watch it now and then. He said it looks fake but, their is something real about thus film that sadly other movies fail to capture.
The video brings back memories of watching Clash of the Titans.
The music brings back memories of all the Kerbals I lost in botched Mun landings.
I love Clash of the Titans and would have loved to have seen Force of the Trojans get made. I even know who could have replaced Harryhausen on the stop motion effects. Phil Tippett who did amazing stop motion work in the 80s would have done a wonderful job. He did stop motion work on everything from Star Wars to Robocop.
Thank you for this retrospective! My father owned movie theatres at the time, and I skipped school to attend the exhibitors' screening prior to its release. Like many films we saw at such events, it was not completely finished, and I did not get to hear Rosenthal's wonderful score. But the film (with its "temp score" soundtrack) was still the "charming adventure" Siskel described. On opening night, I sat once again in the theatre and was immediately blown away by the final product. Yes, the film was already considered "old fashioned" even upon its release, but it represented a grand goodbye to an amazing era that included such legendary characters as Sinbad and Jason & the Argonauts. Thank you again for letting me walk down this beautiful road of nostalgia.
I remember how scared I was of Medusa and those skeletons! CGI may have replaced real effects, but they don't have the same magic of imagination to them. One of the great things about Ray Haryyhausen's effects was the suspension of disbelief - you knew you were looking at stop-motion puppetry, but that wasn't the point. It was magic that you bought into. No one will ever surpass him - he will remain a legend in film, as long as film exists.
Each generation of CGI effects get dated, while these movies will always remain works of Art.
I was so young when I watched it, that I thought looking at Medusa would kill me, too 🤣
Wow. I forgot how much I loved this movie as a kid. Good work Johnathan. Thanks for the great content.
I would down vote you for saying it looks FAKE, but upvoted for the UFO theme!
At the time of watching these type film it was amazing effect seeing the stock motion even from sinbad and the eye of the tiger the 7th voyage of sinbad even star wars and many other films it was a painful long task doing it frame by frame and it was just amazing seeing it come to life on screen as a kid back then.
I remember watching this when it came out. Stop motion movies compared to other special effects of that time wasn't so phony looking. I remember Ray Harryhausen's work on other movies like Jason and The Argonauts and the Sinbad movies were all cool movies. His special effects were pretty good considering the times.
Back n the day, when all was good in the world and all you had to worry about was how many sweets you could buy, me and my ‘ickle friends watched this 3 nights running in the local flea pit cinema (the Scala, long gone, but never forgot). This film brings back so so many happy memories.
Pat Roach was also a Sherpa thug in Raiders of the Lost Ark and had a brief appearance in The Last Crusade (the fight with Indy on the zeppelin was deleted).
Terrific video Jonny! Ive always had a fondness an appreciation for this classic film! Thank you for your time and research on it! 👍🏻
You are a fantastic creator. This was another magnificent video.
Totally Awesome Job Jonny! 👍🏼👍🏼
Excellent movie. Saw it in theaters when I was 6 with my family.
That was one of the first movies I've seen on VHS, back in the day where you could rent a movie on videotape. I kinda wished that I've seen it on the theater, especially with the scenes that would be awesome to see on the big screen. Some years later, I would see on TV the Sinbad movies (7th, Golden and Eye of the Tiger), "The First Men in the Moon" (after reading the book), "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms", "40 Million Miles to Earth" (with that monster that resembles The Kraken), "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers", "The Three Worlds of Gulliver" and "Jason and the Argonauts". Almost all of the movies were made before I was even born. Yeah, we know that they look outdated, but there's something about those movies that can still be enjoyed today.
The 2010 version of "Clash of the Titans" was not bad. I would prefer "Wrath of the Titans". And that 1981 version was meant for kids, even with that nursing scene! That may the ONLY scene that would shock the kids. I would agree that "Clash of the Titans" is one of the best fantasy / sci-fi movies for all ages.
Awesome. Just stumbled across your channel. Loving the content and subscribed!
Fantastic movie and insightful review
It’s crazy how their insight about stop motion versus animated is essentially identical to the argument about practical versus CGI lol
Great information here.. thank you for this.. I love this movie and Ray Harryhausen stuff.. Jason and the argonauts etc
"Release the Kraken."
We sadly lost the Azure Window in 2017, but not before it was seen once again in season one of Game of Thrones, the wedding of Drogo and Danerys
As a horse fanatic, Pegasus fascinated me as an 11 year old!
Just watched this one a couple of months ago. Love it.😄
Great video on one of my favourite movies. Rosthenthal's score is up their with something by John Williams
Ray Harryhausen was a master of his craft!
Awesome channel this, literally stumbled across it. Brings back so many memories! New sub here 🍾🥂 keep up the great work, I have done videos to watch and like.
RIP Mr. Harryhausen
I saw this when I was a kid and even got the action figures for Christmas.
A lovely movie
Fantastic video
Great video! And it's oh-RYE-an Pictures.
Good morning, Jonny! Love this movie. I find it much better than the remake, even though Liam Neesan is in it. I still watch this movie, and I don't find the effects off-putting at all. Honestly, the only thing that looks "fake", is the water destroying the city at the beginning. The miniatures are just SO well done... I think they rival the CGI effects of today's movies.
Terrific job!
Harryhausen was an artist, CGI is just technology. An awesome movie, far better than the remake.
Good on Harry Hamlin! Even as a kid, I was irritated by the changing of the story. Such a great film, can't even mention the hideous 'remake' in the same breath.
Pat Roach was not a respected Shakespearean actor! He was a wresrtler / strong man used by Kubrick early on but was best known for playing Bomber in the long running ITV series Auf Wiedersehen Pet, he was in it for 21 years.
I saw this in the movies and loved it.
Love this movie! I always wanted The Perseus sword!
Hi may I mention Pat Roach playing the Specter strong henchman in the health clinic in James Bond film Never Say Never Again and the Wizard in the Ice Castle and Lizard Apeman in Conan the Destroyer He was also General Keil in Willow the guy with the Skull Mask as well.😃
If you ask me which of the two versions I would pick to enjoy it on a weekend with snacks, the answers is the 81 version. If feels wholesome.
I saw and enjoyed this movie when it first showed in theaters. I refer to this as "Ray Harryhausen's Last Hurrah" . I always suspected even then that this was his final film cause at the time George Lucas was already setting thetrend for better special effects and CGI was starting to make a mark. This was probably Harryhausen's way of saying he was going out with a Bang. Still much better than the remake.
This 1981 production is a lot better than the 2010 remake in my opinion. A lot of these older films are under appreciated for their content. Judy Bowker was fantastic as Andromeda.
Unfortunately the moving background in this video review is quite distracting and annoying for some of us.
Thanks for posting it though.
The cool thing about Dynamation is that you feel as though you could do it too
