MINIMALIST 10 C'S SURVIVAL KIT CHALLENGE

  • This video is about my attempt to create the smallest survival kit that I can trust for 72 hours in the wild. I was inspired by a video from Ranger Survival and Fieldcraft, who showed how to fit the 10 C’s of survival in a cup1. The 10 C’s are essential items that can help you survive in any situation. I decided to take on this challenge after many of my subscribers suggested it to me. I also talk about the Altoid tins survival kits, which are fun and useful mental exercises. Watch this video to see how I pack all the 10 C’s in a minimalist kit and what skills are needed to use them effectively.

I would choose a Victorinox Forester over the Old Timer cos the Forester has a locking blade and mini prybar, plu a saw, awl, can opener etc. The awl and saw will both throw sparks off a ferro rod.

I have found that recycled prescription bottles, because they come in various sizes, are basically transparent and seal pretty well help me catagorize my smaller quantities of items and save space. If you dont have or can not afford storage cans or bags these seem to work well.

Blackie, You Were Not Rude, you called it the way you see it. I would not want to just a Altoids Tin to depend on , they are good for carrying small items. I believe in a bigger kit size a Harver sack . Thanks for sharing your Time and knowledge and wisdom and experience and passing on the Craft, You Are The Master Woodsman and Bushcrafter. You were right about the teddy bear analogy. Just an altoid tin size kit is simply a good luck charm. It can not hold any tools of real value. Nothing that can fit in your pocket is a viable option when you need to boil water. Yes, you can fold a foil cup, but emergencies are not a good time to do origami. Mylar shreds easy and is a pain to unfold, so only the SOL type is what I would trust. With just those two items that are not even the best choices, an altoid tin would be overfilled. I shrunk down a 10 Cs kit to fit into two cargo pockets and still had to cheat by replacing a metal container with a heavy plastic bag and water treatment tablets. Your ideas for this exercise are great, and I feel that you were right about pocket kits being way too optimistic.

I have just started watching the video. I am going to watch in its entirety but for all the folks pushing the idea that Andrew (I think) of Ranger Survival and Fieldcraft did this or that so Blackie is wrong I would like to point something out. First, I really enjoy his channel. Second, he is not only a Pathfinder instructor. As the name of his channel states he is an active duty Ranger who has been through Ranger training and has been to SERE school. I will freely admit that I ain't. I imagine Blackie will freely admit that he ain't and most people watching this probably ain't, either. He doesn't usually build out kits for long term survival - his are often meant to keep someone alive and evading for a day or two until the search and rescue team picks him up. He also talks about whatever kit he features as being supplemental to gear he has in his pockets, etc. so it isn't intended to be a 'this is all I have' situation. In fact, he has pretty much also said that the Altoids tin kits are meant to be part of a system which he refers to as a 'tiered system' and if you lose everything else they are better than nothing. Keep in mind, though, he has also demonstrated short term survival with no kit, at all, using just bare hands, knowledge, training and skills. I'm just saying Andrew is not your average camper/woodscrafter.

I would add an eleventh C - "contemplation". Add a small zip locked bag with a few teabags and sugar packets. It's nice to have a hot sweet drink, but this is really about taking the time to assess your situation, do you sit tight or walk out, what are your next steps, etc. The British military runs on tea, and investing time in making it gives you time to plan what your best options are.

Here is a very comprehensive video on a basic kit covering the 10 C’s. The items that Blackie has included in his version are functional and would be adequate to help survive a 24-72 hour period if necessary in a rugged environment. This compact, functional kit could be thrown into any haversack, bag, or pack as you head out on your adventure. These items can ensure that you are better prepared than you would be without them. A comprehensive list of ten items that are very functional on the trail, which might just provide the resources that you need to survive and thrive, for a day or two. Thanks to Blackie Thomas for being willing to take this challenge and share his insight with us. - Tennessee Smoky

What you’re doing is a fun experiment. I’ve played several times with how small I could get an actual useful minimal kit and came to the conclusion that a small shoulder bag of some sort is necessary simply becase (1) Food (2) Shelter (3) Ease of transport. In my pockets I carry (1) a small swiss army knife with mini fero rod and a paracord lanyard that has a firestarter in the cordage (2) spyderco shaman (3) folded bandana. On my belt is a canvas pouch with canteen cup set and nalgene canteen. Thats, cut, container, combustion, cotton, plus water and something to cook in. The rest, plus any redundancies (2 is 1) fits better and is easier to tote around in a haversack or satchel. However, a little kit like you just made is perfect for having as part of a basic truck emergency kit, keep it tucked under the back seat.

Folks, just remember that the 10-Cs are categories and not the total number of items...

around here we have a thing called an "artic necklace" that covers most of these. 6' of 550 cord onto which is tied a lighter wrapped in tape like yours, lip balm wrapped in 8# mono with a couple needles, a small fixed blade (mora eldris), whistle, mini ferro rod, and a mini rechargeable flashlight. mylar tube tent wrapped in 100' of #12 bank line and a 10x12 1mil plastic drop cloth in your hip pocket, bandana in the other, and a leatherman in your front pocket. 3' bandsaw blade wrapped around the outside of the canteen cup (so you can still put the bottle in and it doesn't remove your fingers when you remove it). Suunto makes a nice wrist compass for the watch band if you want to annoy the missus

Don't forget, Blackie, you CAN do some light baton work with a folding knife. Remember the video put out by Felix Imler? Open the knife to a 90* point and use it in that position to baton. It's when you fully open/lock the blade open that you risk breaking the back of the knife with the force of baton work. There's always a better tool for the job, but knowing what you CAN do with a more limited tool is where your brain compensates for the lesser tool.

Thanks for your wisdom. I agree wholeheartedly. An Altoids tin is an impossible size for a realistic 10-C's kit. It's a great size for a fire/tinder kit, or you could make a water kit and put a whirl pak and 10 water purification tablets into it. Getting lost in the woods with a roll of dental floss, a razor blade, and a single match is a funny scenario, but it's not good in the real world.

The larger esee tin filled with the Jordan Jonas signature card, p38 can opener, write in the rain pen and paper, SOL signal mirror, SOL mylar blanket, buck 110 lite, Suunto clipper compass, aaa battery flashlight with hat clip, pull through knife sharpener, fox 40 whistle, short uco storm matches, BCB commando wire saw, spider wire fishing line on a spool, exotac fire sleeve with bic lighter inside, 2 bread sacks for gathering water, bottle of water treatment tablets, spool of #36 bankline, Pyro putty, and a battlbox chainsaw. I agree completely. Are those tin kits better than nothing? Of course, but why not carry a small useable kit just like what you show. A small belt pouch, a shoulder bag, or haversack is so easy to carry. Let’s not forget that most of us would also need room to carry some food. Can one go without food for 72 hrs? Yes, but with a pouch or haversack I don’t have to and it is still a very compact kit to go into the woods with. We almost never accidentally find ourselves in the woods, we plan on it. So why not plan ahead and make an accidental overnight stay a little easier? I’d rather have the bigger kit with a shelter and some warm food than to have to huddle under a tree with my altoid tin in my pocket doing nothing.

I like to add a string backpack. It folds down real small, and if you ever have to use the stuff you don't have to play tetras several times a day. I also like to keep small stuff on a lanyard or carabiner so it doesn't get lost in the bottom of the container or pulled out by accident. I added split rings or zip ties to knives, whistles, flashlights, the compass, etc for this purpose

Blackie, great 10 C's kit construction and video. The bush pot bag from Camp Craft would also work as a bucket for water storage at camp, a pre-filter, and or a dump pouch to collect fire kindle or berries etc... I would add a little more tape on your lighter it looked like you were running out. I would also change out the long flash light for a Petzl head lamp with Petzl rechargeable battery. Using the head lamp sparingly would last a month before needing to recharge. You can get a small tube like power bank to recharge your phone and battery as needed. I do however feel the need to add a metal water bottle to carry/store water. Yes you can find water and use it at your location but if the need arises to move to another location you need to be able to carry water and drink as you go. Plastic water bottles are good and easy to get to start off with but after that you can't reuse unless you have filters or you boil water and let cool down to put into the plastic water bottles. I like the choices of knives for your kit. Your not building a log cabin so the small knives you picked would work great. I think your kit with a metal water bottle would be a great choice for a survival kit.

  • @jeffconley6366

My problem with all these type of kit ideas is the lack of a viable container to carry water in. In my mind the only thing practical for this is a canteen or metal water bottle. Which makes the kit almost twice as big. I realize there are some other options. But, you would have to wait for the water to cool off before it could be place in the container to carry the water in. Also, the lack of food and something to help with replacing minerals from sweat. I do realize that you don't need them to survive for 72 hours. But, it sure would make it more comfortable.

There is some really good thoughts there. Way back in the day, Dude McLean and Alan Halcon did a series with what's in your pockets, could you survive? They did a weekend. I knew I don't carry that much on me, but most of the time I have a vest, usually an "explorer" style or a hunting one. I have some waxed canvas zipper pouches from Frost river that I keep my main gear in for ease of transfer, many times I have a Duluth shell bag. In the summer, I slip the zipper pouches in to the explorer vest, or the canvas shoulder bag. In the fall I switch to the hunting vest. I can add a bit as I head out of the house or vehicle from the stores in them. Even then I would not want to go with that little in Dec, Jan, Feb up here. The rest of the year that takes care of my needs. The important thing is to see if you could spend a not so pleasant couple of days out, not only in good, but bad weather with those things. Just because one guy on the net like Greg Ovens can do it, don't mean you can. The hardest thing right now for me is carrying medication because some of it has to be in the precription bottle or they can arrest me til I can prove it. Those two bottles won't fit in a Altoid tin.

Excellent video, as usual Blackie, thank you. However, I have a few observations.
    1) Why people have this fascination with making small “survival” kits is beyond me.
    2) I think if we are totally honest with ourselves, the vast majority of us will never be in a true survival situation since most everyone has a cellphone and service.
    3) I have heard very few people mention that one of the MOST important things you can do before heading into the woods is tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back. My dad taught me that many, many years ago when we hunted. Mom knew where we were going and if we weren’t back by a predetermined time, she could call someone for help.
    4) Finally, I don’t believe doing these minimal kits, specifically Altoids tins, if a useful “thought experiment” because my time is valuable and it is a waste of my time.
Anyway, that’s just my 2 cents on the minimal survival kit.

Thanks for your honest way and presentation Blackie. Sa! w a scary show about a couple lost in a Texas desert, on death's doorstep for the lack of pre planning a 10C kit. Just going on a 4 hour hike, stuck in desert for 3-4 days. They did survive, but a 10-C kit may have kept them alive! That makes good case to watch and learn and do the right things. Great job Sir!

love those GP pouches, and for those who insist on using altoids tin kits (or use the tins for smaller individual kits ie. repair, sewing, fishing, fire etc) the exterior flapped velcro pouches comfortably hold one altoid tin (or a small bottle of foot powder for your balls)

Well done Blackie!!! And that's a sensible "minimal" kit. Thanks for the video and for sharing your thoughts, ideas and experience with us. Don't worry about offending Teddy Bears......Grizzlies, Grizzlies would be something that could cause some concerns. LOL.

A well thought out list of items there Blackie. Just a recommendation I think would be to have this setup with the Helikon Tex Essential Kit bag. Would go along better with your setup and provide slightly extra space for food unless you intend on hunting and foraging with this setup. Have a look at @Backcountry kiwi channel on his setup.

Great video to get the "thinking juices" flowing Blackie. I found an altoids tin kit fun to make but did not believe it could realistically cover more than a minor, uncomfortable overnighter. I was blessed to see the Old Timer Son Of A Gun folder. Thanks for the continuing great vids Blackie.

Another one that got me was the VSSL. Seemed like a whiz bang idea until you realized it was basically 2-4 oz cans in a length of PVC pipe if you wanted to make a cheap homemade version.
Or those screw apart aluminum tube hiking sticks that have sporks and different stuff at each section.
I do have one of those screw apart ferro rods with the nice striker on my keychain for a backup to the Bic in my pocket. What I wish it had was a small tinder compartment/section

Took some notes and gears are turning. I will for sure include my Grayl ti Ultra press, and backpack size poncho (shelter & etc.) w/tent stakes and line, in a Mountain Smith Drift belt pack. Logic: if it's fastened around your waist you're not going to set it on the ground and walk off without it.

For the cutting tool in this exercise, I would probably go with a Cold Steel mini Pendleton Hunter. Once upon a time I used one to field dress and quarter a young buck. It was hit by a car and the park ranger offered it to me.

Hey Blackie- Im impressed with how much you got in that bag with some room left. I guess there are many different schools of thought on the subject of carrying or having the 10 C's. Im an old school veteran and dont mind humping a little extra weight, but a small kit like yours would definitely get the job done if used properly. Good job Blackie-

You have tent pegs with your cover you can set the bush pot on and build a fire underneath, or drive a few green sticks into the ground.
