Thanks everyone....one of these days I'll be a star!!!!!!! 🎩🎩⭐⭐⭐
didnt know ronnie B lived in muswell hill. ronnie C lived near me,
No..I think it was just the the character in the show.
He boiled them.
A most meritorious venture Mr Joolz. Much respect from your friends in Kuwait
i literally binge on joolzs vids especially when im supposed to be working . doing a great job sir thankyou
Unlike you, apparantly ;)
A friend of mine lived just down the road from the cottage where Peter Sellars lived. He was glad to see him move, as he had an annoying habit of playing what my friend thought was a trumpet,, at around 5am every morning. He would usually play it outside,in his garden as loud as he could !
At work some mornings,my friend often looked tired,as a result of being woken at 5am, and not being able to get back to sleep. Someone at work said they were a fan of his films and the Goons, and my friend suggested they try living next door to him !
The railway to Ally Pally was not "intended". . It was very much in operation for many years - taking hundreds of thousands of people to the Palace for exhibitions.
Oh Joolz, Muswell Hill is SO much more interesting than you let on. Too much time spent round Cranley Gardens. But why the Woodsman ffs (that's Archway). Deep, deep interesting history here, including Roman. The Moss Well wasn't at the roundabout, but the roundabout did used to be a spring-fed pond (until 1849). There was a convent built to service pilgrims to the Moss Well (now in a back garden). The Green Man pub & Inn was established in the 1500s (now grievously remodeled as flats). There's a couple of 18th century buildings near it too. In the 1700s there were 7 or 8 great country estates on the crown of Muswell Hill (part of the stables of two of them now a private homes), the most interesting of which belonged to Topham and Diana Beauclerk (Samuel Johnson's friends). It had an observatory & a 30K volume library. Stones from The Elms, another of the country houses are embedded in the walls that line the front gardens of Queens Avenue which cuts through the former estate. Muswell Hill got much bomb damage, one whole street was rebuilt post-war & there's many other smaller bomb sites, now infilled. St James church got hit with a couple of incendairies, so the interior is 'new'. The present building replaced an earlier church on the site & there's a VR post box near the entrance placed there at the time of the old church. Would have liked to here more about The Old Village down the bottom of St James lane and our beloved Antheneum, sacrificed for the 'new' Sainsbury's in the 1960s. And W. Martyn's coffee sellers surely rates a mention, yes? It's been in the same unchanged premises since 1897. When you're ready to come round to do an update, call me first :-)
And the "Royal Oak" on St. James Lane, from the 1600's until they ruined it in the 1960's.
What street was completely rebuilt?
@@michaelberg9656 I know. Grievous that.
@@michaelberg9656 Fortismere Avenue. See Jack Whitehead's book, "The Growth of Muswell Hill". A bomb damage map & description of all the damage is on pgs 167-168
@@tovangar Hello. I have Jack Whitehead's book. AFAIK only a few houses were destroyed, my girlfriend lived in a Collins house built around 1910. More damage on Midhurst Avenue, I think.
Watching these vids from an council estate has made me want to travel all these places now in the summer time since i barely leave my own postcode
I lived on Dukes Avenue right where Jools is walking at (11:03). I think the Frog Pool in Queen's Wood was a paddling pool in the fifties. As a very young kid, I fell into it (all six inches of it) and was very upset and have been terrified of water ever since, and still can't swim.😁😁
Shocking that people haven't heard of Fairport Convention.
I was shocked. I figured at the very least his sister would be familiar with them.
The name of a folk band in the 60
Sandy Denny great.
@@johndonohoe3778 - and Richard Thompson as well!
1:56 is an absolute sight to behold - what a splendid example of queuing.
Lived in Muswell Hill in 1970 and loved it. I worked at the Silverdale Hotel ( long gone ) and later at Greygates Nursery which was a family operated business and may very well still be going strong. Wonderful memories of those times.
I was there a month ago and took a picture of 23 Cranley Gardens and the owner came downstairs and glared at me. I said her property should have a blue plaque anyway! Amazing how close it is to the rich and famous residents of Highgate
In the late 60’s Rod Stewart used to grab a pint in the Woodman before catching the tube into central London to play with Long John Baldry.
Excellent! Thanks!
Him & latest wife, but for the tabloid skullduggery, almost became my neighbours on a beach north of Auckland.
Life eh...
That bus queue!!! ... Welcome to Britain 😆😎
Born & raised in Muswell Hill, parklands walk is definitely the pot spot 😂 & I have stood in that bus q for the last 4 years. learnt so much from this video! Thanks Joolz. Also, my uncle worked on the house next door to Dennis and would always find random pieces of bone/skin and had to report it.
20K then, over 200K now. Well done Joolz Guides. You do a great job telling facts about london. I keep returning to your channel for that
I come back to this video again and again. Though I’ve spent most of my life in Canada, I started out life in this part of the world (North London) and started returning to visit this area only a few years ago. Your videos are terrific for the information you share and for making me feel nostalgic for a place I barely know but was where my parents started our family. Thank you Joolz!
The Highgate tunnels and that old disused railway station are remarkable, Joolz. I never realised that there was a railway line in that location. Being in Muswell Hill must be great! To think that the great English rock group The Kinks hail from there - marvellous, they were really big favourites of mine. Packed full of information, this is a fantastic video, and so, many thanks.
i know a friend who lives in the kink's house its rlly cool
edit: she's a mad drummer, it explains it all
I love watching these videos and have been a subscriber for a year or so now. Was watching the this one when I noticed that the two Virginia plates on the wall at the Clissold Arms at 13:14 belonged to my cousin Bruce MacQueen who was "The" Kinks fan. Unfortunately he past 2 years ago but it's nice to know that there is still a piece of him in the shrine to his favourite band in his favourite city. Thanks Joolz, you made my day and brought a tear my eye and a lump to my throat.
You could have mentioned Alexandra Park racecourse (1868-1970). Known as the quirkiest course in the UK it could stage races of only three different distances, the camber was terrible, the turns were ridiculously tight and spectator viewing was severely impaired. It’s amazing it lasted more than a century. The jockey Willie Carson said it needed bombing. The exotic black, plumed tipster, Prince Monolulu, used to visit. I saw him looking miserable on the 41 bus one evening after a presumably unsuccessful meeting. The first race on the day it closed, 8 September, was won by a horse called Dawn Reign at 10-1. I had a tenner on it.
Nicknamed 'The Frying Pan' because of the shape of the track.
Ohh my old home and best place in the world, Muswell Hill, where I lived for 18 years. I know all the places you visited. My first daughter was born there and we used to take her to Highgate Wood.
This was great to watch. Born and raised in Muswell Hill (Dukes Ave)
Joolz you are brilliant and unique. No encyclopaedia could compete with the comprehensive detail you deliver ... every time! Who is the fabulous girl singing in the background here?
I took my 9 year old brother to see Muddy Waters at Ally Pally, summer 1979, so he would remember that for the rest of his life.
Thanks for a wonderful trip down Memory Lane, Joolz! I grew up on Fortis Green in the 50s and loved watching your delightful travel guide. Went to Saturday morning pictures at The Odeon, Muswell Hill every Saturday and it was always mayhem with kids fighting, screaming and throwing stuff, the lady in the uniform with her torch was powerless to stop it. 6d. to get in and 4d. for a choc ice if I had the extra cash. Took the 102 for 1d. if it was raining.
From 20,000 subscribers to 56,000 in a year! Congratulations.
Very Nostalgic for me Julian. After living in the Nurses' Home at St Clement's Hospital, Mile End, for about 9 months, I moved to a flat in Muswell Hill whose garden backed onto Alexandra Park. I thought I'd feel safer there, & I did. But many years later I realised that Dennis Neilson was living there while I lived there. Isn't life an Illusion!!!
Nice 👍🏻 Back In The 90's We'd Catch The W7 From Finsbury Pk Up To Queens Woods To Go Magic 🍄 Mushroom Picking, There's Large Crops Of Them That Pop Up In The Autumn, Happier Times
Just in time for my Kinks Muswell Hill London visit on Aug.7th!! I'm a great Kinks fan since 1964 and this will be my first London visit. Thanks a lot for this!!
You are welcome. Don't forget to subscribe for more like this!
I just stumbled upon this video and I cannot thank you enough for covering this area. My grandfather was born in Muswell Hill and it has always been my dream to at least visit this area and see where he was born and lived until he emigrated to America (I dream of moving to London). I still hope that someday I will be able to vist but until then this made me feel as though I visited a small part of his home.
I binged these before I went to London and it made it so much cooler to recognize all these places.
"killer view" - I know shouldn't laugh at that LOL
It was a little disrespectful but I think I got away with it.
that's your dry humour ha ha@@Joolzguides
Wow! What memories! I was born in Alexandra Maternity Home at the top of Alexandra Park Road in 1948.
So was I, but in March 1947.
As was I, in February 1960! My mother’s claim to fame, she says, was being told off for hula hooping on the ward the day after giving birth to me. The site of the maternity home now caters to the other end of life with a block of flats for the elderly, I believe. Always been proud to call myself a Muswell Hillbilly. A very interesting tour of the area by Joolz, great stuff. The ‘facts’ about the defunct railway line from Finsbury Park up to Ally Pally that now forms the Parkland Walk are seriously awry, but I can forgive him that!
Love the kinks and madness !
I nearly spit my tea out laughing at this intro. 🤣 I was not prepared for that!
It's a beautiful place❣️
Love the reference to Porridge and Fairport Convention! I'm a huge fan of Pentangle as well. Love this vid! Thanks!
Oh, don’t forget the groundskeepers cottage in Highgate Wood. The groundskeeper looks after Highgate Wood and Hampstead Heath. Can you imagine living in a forest, in London?!
I was watching a rare DVD of Leonard Whiting and Jean Simmons in “Say Hello to Yesterday”-great London locations-and it got me thinking of other Swinging London films from the 60s and early 70s. “Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment.” “Alfie.” “A Hard Day’s Night.” Of course there are more. How much of that London remains? What’s been gentrified? What’s been razed to allow space for high rise flats? Cities are never static.
Being from the Ilford area I dont know N London very well. I have heard Muswell Hill Crouch End and the Alexandra Palace areas are lovely and your great video shows this. Great part of N London I must visit sometime! Thank you for the lovely video
I went to School in Muswell Hill so lovely to watch
Love watching and learning so much about MY Beloved London, now living in Sydney Australia
Allways a pleasure watching these - some I have seen 2x times.
It’s awesome to rewatch the old videos. You’re now over 200,000 subscribers and in this video you’re talking about only 20,000 subscribers. Great work Joolz and crew ! Bravo Zulu 😎
Just discovered these mini films and clips of London. Made with such fun and he is very very interesting and makes the whole thing flow beautifully. Well done.
Loved this. I went to school in Hornsey and once a month we did cross country around Ally Pally.
I've been living in Italy since 1979 and I still queue like the English. I can't change! lovely video.
You must always be the last onto the bus then!
Very honourable of you, keep up the good manners!
Brilliant as usual! Encapsulates the spirit of London beautifully
Yes but did you know that Fairport convention took their name from the building called Fairport where they used to rehearse, opposite the old firemans cottages on Fortis Green rd. Also... the Davis brother used to attend what's now know as Fortismere School (my old school). Beautiful vid, loved the Pitcairn island one too
Its a house called F airport I make deliveries there on a regular basis
Yes it's the name of the house at the top of Leaside Road. I think the name plaque is still next to its front door.
Yeah this area has some really cool public parks we stayed in Nth Finchley few years back, took the bus down to Highgate Wood or Muswell Hill a fair bit I was at the whim of a 4 year old so it was all about the playgrounds and flying foxes etc but we trod lots of this ground. Anyway nice vid Joolz, thanks.
Just Brilliant, Muswell Hill was one of my old stomping grounds when I was a kid... Thanks for the Vid…
Cheers. We probably have mutual friends.
I've never heard of Muswell Hill, I l think its great that you talk about little know areas as well at the more popular ones. Thank Julian another great vid.
Thanks...well I'll run out of places eventually!
I seem to remember the pond at the bottom of Ally Pally had a little mini railway running roud it
We love you from Austin Texas . Cheers, dear !
Thoroughly enjoying your videos Joolz !!
It's amazing how similar this is to crystal palace. It had the palace, the transmitters and just round the corner there's a converted old section of railway with a tunnel with bats!!
Ah...now I do intend to do Crystal Palace!
Make sure to go to Sydenham Hill Woods -- thats the old railway nr. crystal palace
Interesting seeing the boating lake at Alexandra Palace I remember my mum telling me there use to be a miniature railway running around it,which I remember, and she told me that she took my elder brother on it and he asked her if he could stay on it and go round again and she said no ,which was rather fortunate as the next time round the Train crashed causing fatalities .
Another good show. Thanks.
loving the video's Jules, looking forward to seeing more weekend walks in London :)
Thanks Ian. I do have quite a lot for you to get through already but I'll try to keep them coming.
Missed the lovely aromatic coffee shop in Muswell Hill. I remember the smell of freshly ground mocha coffee drifting down the high street in days gone by.
With that gigantic antique roaster in the window - loved going past to get that incredible aroma on the way to W.H. Smiths.
That’s the one, John. :-)
You are truly amazing! You have such wonderful assistants too. Such history, knowledge all in one city...London is the best and Joolz is the best guide and entertainer 👏👏👏👏👏
Aw jeez Joolz
Crevice is a dirty word . 😂brilliant
Julian, you got me at your intro.....subscribed immediately. Wonderful enjoyable, intelligent and hilarious videos......
As ever FAF and informative, what a combination. Will order a tour when next we down
Always a pleasure to watch... good fun!!!
Thank you Joolz! Really enjoyed your video! Thumbs up!
Thanks Mike! I hope you enjoyed the others too. I have quite a few. DOn't forget to subscribe!
Great video. Lots of weird and wonderful stories. I will have to try some of the pubs when I am next in north London.
Cheers. Yes, there are certainly a few to choose from!
Very good, but you missed so much stuff! I grew up in Muswell Hill, and rode on the push-pull ltrains as a kid, so I must correct you on one thing. You say the branch from Highgate to Ally pally was planned but never happened. Actually it opened in 1873. It came and went with the fortunes of Ally Pally itself. Much work was done in preparation for the ill-fated electrification program, which made it very interesting, with wrong-height platforms, lineside cabling with no purpose, even some 4-rail track in places, and empty sub-stations.
Lucky you !
Joolz brillant as usual walk with lots of interesting information.
Love the walkabouts , keep up the good work mate :)
Loved this once again. I dont think you have done a video yet that I have not thoroughly annoyed. Thank you Julian.
Ha ha! Thanks....although I think you mean enjoyed, not annoyed.....I hope!
Fun London Guides - Julian McDonnell Films ..haha...yes oooops sorry!😂
New joolz video, we are blessed!
I'm trying! They just take so long.
Great work Jools. I was at Alexandra Palace in February, it’s a bugger to get to. The Kinks are one of my favourite bands ever, I’ll drop into that pub next time I’m in The Smoke.
Yes, W7 from Findsbury Park...or is it W3?
Fun London Guides - Julian McDonnell Films Either will do.
I'm a Muswell Hillbilly boyyyy!
Mr Joolz you are a London treasure...
Lovely :) Thank you!
Thanks Jools I absolutely loved this vlog.. have missed you.

Thanks again. It's only been two weeks! You might have to wait again I"m afraid.. Got a couple to edit though!
After seeing your jack the ripper tour and seeing u mention the Nielsen house I would love to see you do maybe a "haunted location walk" video. Popular supposedly haunted locations etc
I think I will! Perhaps for Hallowe'en!
Ahh the 134 bus , use to catch the bus to go to Frien Barnet Grammar. Good memories. I use to go to Norfolk House just off the Broadway. Very nostalgic.
Hi Julian David here a scot living in London I love your vlog thank you for sharing it David I just found you to day great stuff
Thanks David. I'm a Mc too but I think our name comes from Northern Ireland. Glad you like the films!
Lovely Blackadder reference. It is so ingrained in our culture that, as soon as you said the phrase "...isn't a dirty word" the first word that always springs to mind is always "Crevice!"
Yikes...that was something new and completely different! I did get an immediate throbbing headache at the mention of Thunderbird....dejavu all over again. Brilliant as usual Jules.
Don't start me on Blue Nun.
Ido lot your walks great fun even one cold day
Thanks Jools Im loving watching your videos
Thanks Mick.
I use to go to London regularly when I lived in Cambridge. Great show Joolz! Nearly watched all your vids,, Brill 👍🏻
Hey Joolzy, see you have a mention of an Art Deco cinema, interested to see a video about London’s top 10 Art Deco cinemas 👍
An abandoned station that nature has claimed how cool 👍👍
Got that knotted towel right here. Totally agree about "The Kinks."
I'm not sure why I say these things sometimes...
Joolz you’re the best mate. Watching your videos fills me with endless joy. On my next birthday would be great to organise a pub crawl of historic boozers round town. I’ll get in touch in due course. Big hug. X
Ah Joolz, love your work........
Thanks Michelle!
the steam train did reach ally pally, I wrode on the footplate as a young kid. it was going to be electrified to form a spur of the northern line tube but this was never finished and eventually the lines were ripped up.
Sorry I didn't see your post before i added mine. I rode the push-pull trains too.
Loving the Blackadder quotes dude! Keep up the spiffing work!
I thought I had watched all of your videos, a lot of them more than once. This one however, I seem to have missed for some reason but it is one of the best, shame it's shorter, would have liked more, but I loved it. Thankyou.
A other great video,thanks
Thank you for watching!
You missed out that Alexandra palace was a WW1 internment camp for Germans in the UK.
There was a throw back to "Not The Nine O'Clock News" with the darts joke ;)
Splendid!!! Second person to notice!!! I'm glad it wasn't lost on people.
@@Joolzguides Rest assured plenty of us out here noticed that! Just discovered your brilliant series of London walks, busy chomping my way through them - hugely enjoyable and informative, thank you.
I used to stay in Highgate about for 5 months x
I was obsessed with your channel and then you denied any knowledge of Fairport Convention! When I hear the music that carries your videos, I instantly think of Richard Thompson. Love you anyway! Went to London in '02 and wish I had your guidance then.
The parkland walk from Highgate to alley pally , was not a proposed railway, it actually did exist as a railway, called the 'northern heights' that ran from finsbury Park up to ally pally, where the station building is behind the palace, the track bed was removed and turned into a nature walk, when the line closed, as well as the station at cranley gardens, which was knocked down.
Tickled by the as you said “generally mucking about” bit
❤🎉Muswell Hill 🎉❤
