    Week 5 of the Surrey Championship Div 2 saw the 1st XI travelling to the lovely Pixham Road ground in Dorking in the shadow of Box Hill. Not a great day in the office for Sanderstead, but some quality cricket from a couple of the opposition players.

    I once scored 111* in about 60 balls against Dorking and something seemed altogether easy about the innings. Later found out the club was mourning the passing of one of it's oldest members a few days earlier and I'd never felt more shit about celebrating a century.

    • @Guy_6397
      @Guy_6397 Před 4 lety +8

      This is exactly why they play! Bit of extra income, and somewhere to gain a bit of confidence before their next pro fixture.
      A lot of people like to complain about this, and I can see why, it's a valid viewpoint But in my club the benefits of playing with pros to our developing players is undeniable.

    • @mickdargan1677
      @mickdargan1677 Před 4 lety +3

      But at least two of the “developing players” get to develop from the spectator area or from a distant ground in the second XI. Go on, tell me how having two pros hitting a team of amateurs all over the field develops folk. Likelihood is that even the lower order batters didn’t take to the crease either so tell me how they’re being developed.
      It sounds like a team with a bit of cash available to buy a trophy instead of creating a junior team to go through and eventually make up the backbone of the first XI.

    • @Guy_6397
      @Guy_6397 Před 4 lety +2

      @@mickdargan1677 wow, so angry. Well, it's pretty simple. The players not able to play in the first XI, play in the 2nd XI. The 2nd XI is therefore a stronger side and plays in a higher division than it would otherwise. So it ends up being more of a 1.5st XI.
      In the case of my club, our 1st XI play in the highest achievable league (Prem 1), our second XI play in div 1 of the county league, our 3rd XI play in div 2. So the standard is high throughout.
      This means that the gap between the teams is small. There are other teams in our area that do not have pros, and typically there is a large gulf between their 1st XI and their 2nd XI. Which means that any player dropped from the 1s has to go back to a much lower standard, which is a development inhibitor.
      For your info, I play in the 4s, were in div 5 of our county league. And sure, sucks when I get promoted to the 3s only to be dropped back down because a first teamed has returned, but it's competitive cricket. All life is a competition, getting salty at good players, because they shine a greater light on my own incompetence is just narcissism.

    • @mikeairmax23
      @mikeairmax23 Před 4 lety +5

      Agreed. It's the way club cricket is now I'm afraid. It used to be just the top premier divisions who paid players but now, all over the country there are a very high number of 1 & 2 man teams in every league. Teams would rather pay a couple of pros than bring youth through as it's a quick fix to success. However in my opinion it has a detrimental effect on club cricket, how it's played and overall participation levels.

    I only ever played one match in a team where one guy was miles better than everyone else on the field. He spent almost the entire match helping the youngsters - a decent all-rounder, I think he batted about number 10, from memory, and bowled one or two overs at the start of the innings and came on again at the end. I'm not even sure we won - I think we did, but it was 30 years ago. I like to think everyone had a good and useful day out - I know I did. If he'd opened the batting and scored 150 in an hour and half, declared, and then taken 6 for 10 with the new ball, I'm not sure anyone would have had much of a day. But we would definitely have won, if that's the only thing that matters.
