Just now realized how much I like Christian. Would have never guessed how cool he was without this interview
This was a great interview, C.F is a legend.
I witnessed his surfing at desert point in 2007.
He was wearing a cap at the peak and paddled into a beast, after his bottom turn he flipped his cap backwards and proceeded to pull into a long macking pit.
I'd never seen so much style with zero fucks given.
I bumped into him later that week at "Twice Bar" in Kuta, The guy is so down to earth, he's living in the right frequency.

Christian has heaps of confidence, respect, humor, humility, and heart. Iconic style, totally unpretentious and real. This is the best interview I've seen of him. Great job Occ!

christian wasnt very nice to me when. we were growing up. he hung out with my older brother they we're 3 years older he is top 5 best ever surfer hands down seen him surf many days many. conditions. he should be well respected for his surfing he never liked surfing in contests i remember he was kicked out. of a nssa contest at 204./cement stairs in clemente cause we wouldnt stop riding down the slop n the cliffs with cardboard and nssa event. guy only kicked christian out the guy didnt like christian. all ways have christian is my 2 favorite surfer archy was that was because u were a dick quite being a dick.awesome interview christian

Right!! I freaking love this shit. So much amazing programs and long form conversation interviews where you actually get to learn about people, places and things instead of a 60 second piece on network tv... wish I had it as a kid!! The shit I could’ve learned!!! Have a good one!!

Skateboarding gave me strength, power and self-confidence for my entire life. snowboarding gave me joy and haven on a board. and surfing finally open my eyes for the wonder of life and healed me from everything what burdens me, on my way to what i am, a happy hard struggling and kind of wise person, who loves life in every second (peace)...
Of course there is music, love and other things in the world....but, i dunno, boards are kind of magic and fuckin awesome.

... I saw him just a few days ago at un's, kuta, and he let me think. Hes a rebel like me, and he gives me just a good feeling that im following still the right way.
Im born far away from every skatepark, ocean or mountain...i traveled a lot, im 43. 30 years of skate snow and surf!

Two of the most original genuine authentic fkn legends that have been in this industry since groms and never ever sold their sources, their souls, their opinions. My favourite Occ-cast. Christian had a rough life, but damn, he speaks his mind and is spot on about the WSL, weakening of culture, bratty kids etc. Burnout or not, he wears his heart on his sleeve. Trooper. Salute.

@@nextari I don't think the surfers are ok with leaving the beach lifestyle in order to make in the Hollywood crappy scene, i'm sure as well that guys like him or Bruce could make it into the scene, but the question is, are they willing to do it? They rather live a zero fucking giving lifestyle, surfing and smoking joints all day long. Check out Bunker Spreckels story, he had free acess to both worlds equally, but he chose to be a surfer

Herbie Fletcher is an all time inspiration for me. I've never met him but he just seems so genuine, humble....great guy. I like all of the Fletchers.....I just think Christian and Nathan are so blessed to have a father like Herbie.

Your mother, Debbie and my wife at that time, Troyce Roertson, were friends same school and neighborhood and that shit. Debbie invited us over to see her newborn, you, and so that is how that happened. My name is Whitey which probably means nothing to you but always loved finding out how you were getting along. Also love the fact the Christian asks Occ what a regret is. Perfect! Both of those guys were my hero growing up. Classic. Not sure who selects the people for the OccCast, but its awesome. Would be keen to see Pottz, Munga, Richie Collins, Johnny Boy Gomes, Matt Branson, Todd Holland to mention just a few.
It's clear that his tattoos are his real regret. This is very refreshing. He realizes what a total disaster the ridiculous herd tattoo phenomenon of the last 27 years or so has been. Most refreshing.

I grew up skating. A little bit surfing. Watching Christian do airs on waves like skating was mind blowing. Sux tho, coz he was a punk skater/surfer and wasn’t scored. Nek minit clean cut slater started doing airs and became the youngest world champ. Who knows how many titles Christian would’ve won. He was way ahead of his time.

Hi Christian.. this is my second time watching this interview, and both times I was impressed with your insights. Fun story, I knew your mom Dibi back in the "Doheny Doper Days" before she met Herbie. We both went to San Clemente High.. and graduated in 1968, "The Summer of Love" (Yes, that's one of my old pictures..). She hung out with us__our tight little group at Doheny all summer, we would smoke weed, drop acid and surf (pre-harbor).

I’m digging this episode and had to pause it to make this comment. I remember seeing Christian back in the day in mags doing his thing. He’s great. I love what he said about today’s top surfers being “jocks”. He’s right. I’m old school, and, he’s right. They are suppressed in their claim for fame as a remember all the real surfing characters...Buttons, Rory, Jay, Johnny-Boy, and Jason. Right-on Christian!
