8 Meters: Triumph, Tragedy and a Photo Finish at Le Mans

  • In a war fought by titans of industry - one from Michigan, the other from Maranello - on the roads of rural France, the battle for sports car supremacy came to a head in 1966 when three of Ford Motor Company’s GT40s beat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the closest endurance racing finish of all time. Exactly half a century later, “8 Meters,” a new documentary produced by Kahn Media, explores what really happened on those final, fateful laps.

      Before this movie, very few people ever heard the name Ken Miles. I knew him because I grew up in the pits at Riverside Raceway and my dad was good friend to Ken (mainly because the both fought in WWII together for Great Britain... Ken in tanks and my dad a fighter pilot in the RCAF) and shared the same pit area with Ritchie Ginther (another legendary name in racing but known by very few outside the track), Dan Gurney and James Garner (the actor). We were there at Riverside when Ken passed in the crash in one of the Mk. IV prototypes. Another reason that my dad was friends with Ken and Dan was because they were all design engineers and my dad was a test pilot at Edward's AFB (who also flew the Lockheed A-12 Oxcart for OBS- Other Branch of Service). My dad took Ken's death very hard and quit racing shortly after his death... he didn't have the heart to tell me for almost 10 years later (when I started C production SCCA racing in my 1972 Datsun 240Z). I learned how to drive from Bob Bondurant... rest in peace!
      My favorite memories of Ken was when he took me for hot laps around Riverside in all of the Ford GT prototypes... including the J-car prototype that he was killed in (except the roadster). Christian Bale's performance as Ken was truly amazing... I had flashbacks of talking to him as a kid.

      I remember the actual race back then. My interest in sports car racing started with the 1964 Daytona Continental 24hr. where I first saw the Cobra Daytona coupe driven by Dave McDonald. I became a fan of Ken Miles when I was only 13. I saw him race the Cobra roaster #98 at Bridgehampton N.Y. I wrote letters to him, asking about the Cobra and he answered them and sent me pictures of the new Cobra Daytona Coupe. I continued following his career and he sent me a Photo of the Ford GT. He went on to win the following year 1965 Daytona 24hr. Sebring 12hr. Almost won Le Mans that year, teamed up with Lloyd Ruby of indy car fame. They were a great team, I don't remember why they weren't teamed up the following year for the Le Mans which Ken Miles was robbed of 1st place.

Ford gave his race team an unlimited budget and Miles had direct input on whatever he wanted for the cars. Unlike NASCAR and Trans Am racing at that time none of this had much connection with the cars being sold in the showrooms, Shelby never built enough Cobras to even allow one third of the Ford dealerships in America to get one. If you're looking for a villain, you might want to try the ACO (Automobile Club de l'Ouest) - the people who run the LeMans race. They originally told Ford that a dead heat would be an acceptable finish. Instructions were given to the drivers based on that assurance from the ACO. Sometime later, the ACO came back and changed their original determination. There were no radios between the driver and crew in those days, and the decision was made, that short of calling the cars into the pits, trying to communicate through the pit board system would only cause confusion with the drivers. So, the original directions to the drivers, based on ACO assurances of a tie being acceptable were allowed to stand by Carroll Shelby as they had to win the race.

I too had never heard of Ken Miles until today even though I was familiar with this race. What an incredible guy and what an incredible day in history. It was sweet and bitter, full of aggravation and celebration. The pressure and the stakes and drama were sky high. The end result was the culmination of so much hard work by so many, many whose names have been lost. Big congrats to all the engineers, mechanics and drivers who pulled this off in about three years of pushing. That's not a lot of time to win against the legendary Ferrari teams who had been eating and breathing this sport for decades. It goes to show that with bails of money, brute force, and teams of dedicated professionals, one could conquer the world. Conversely I see Ferrari's side; a very small company that always punched above its weight and somehow felt that they'd been had. Then again, it's good to see they got the stuffing beat out of them a few times by some Americans too.

    Something to note: The GT40s that won LeMans on 66 and 67 were Ford works teams, but Ford withdrew from LeMans afterwards. However a handful of teams were still racing them in 68 and 69, and one of them carried the torch of the Ford works’ winning streak.
    The GT40 that won the 68 and 69 LeMans was privately owned by John Wyer, the original guy that Ford contacted to create the GT40, but fired when it was unsuccessful at 64. Ironically, that gulf liveried Mk I is perhaps the most famous GT40 to date, and as far as I know the only car that ever won Le Mans twice. (The 69 winner that won Le Mans was the exact same car as the one that won in 68 with a different racing number)

      Yes, John Wyer was the Team Manager for the Ford GT40 team its first year in 1964. Under his stewardship, the GT40s never finished a race, let alone won one. So Ford took the GT40s away from Wyer and put them in the hands of the Shelby team. Shelby won the 1st time out and that was at Daytona in '65. Apparently Wyer and his crew learned a hell of a lot between the end of the 1964 season and the beginning of the 1967 season when his team built their "Mirage" race cars, including Chassis 1075, which after racing in 67 as a Mirage, for 1968 was converted to standard GT40 bodywork and went on to win Le Mans in 68 and 69.

      Frank Pienkosky nah, after 1967, there was a limit on engine discplacement to 5.0L for the prototypes. The Ford factory team decided to leave and not participate in future LM races. The 68 and 69 GT40 Mk I was technically a privateer. Said privateer (John Wyer) was one of the original fathers of the GT40, but he is still a privateer nonetheless.
      Ferrai widthrew from Le Mans because they wanted to focus on F1. It was around the same tome where Niki Lauda said that their F1 car was rubbish while testing. He suggested that if Ferrari were to be successful at F1, they would have to focus their funding to F1 and not their sports car (group 5 prototype/Le Mans) programme. Ferrari agreed with the condition that if Lauda didn’t win the next race, they would fire him. Lauda won the next race, and Ferrari propmptly abandon their sports car programme. They hadn’t returned to Le Mans ever since. I forgot exactly which year but by 1975 I believe they have left completely.

      @devandrasimanjuntak1646 Před 3 lety

      Frank Pienkosky they out those chicanes on Le Mans way forward in 1990, after a Peugeot broke the all time speed record for Le Mans, 407 km/h. That car was specifically designed to go fast round the Mulsanne straight, because it was slow everywehre else and would last only a couple laps before the engine starts overheating. But it did it’s job.
      The strange thing is, contrary to pupular belief, most of the accidents that happened in Le Mans were on other sections of the track. The Mulsanne straight almost never saw controversy despite the cars going at 360 km/h for Group 5 and 6 prototypes as well as 380-390 km/h in the Group C era. FIA was just scared because now that someone had broken the 400 km/h barrier, everyone would start to race to that speed. So to stop that from happening, they added the chicanes. In retrospect, it might have been a wise decision, but up to that point, there was very minimal accidents in the Mulsanne straight itself.

    Wait a minute. All these years we've been told the "wrong car" (McLaren/Amon in the #2) won the race because of a technicality, i.e. they started further back, so they covered more distance overall. But, thanks to this video, we learn the #2 was in the lead, and was the first to slow when told to do so, then comes the 2nd place car, car #1, driven by Miles and Hulme and they overtake the #2 car before giving in to the team orders. When the #1 car passed the already slow moving #2 car, McLaren or Amon must've been thinking, "What the hell, did they not get the memo? We were comfortably in the lead!" Then the #1 finally slows for the photo-finish/dead-heat finish. Then, since the McLaren/Amon car started 8 meters further back, therefore they covered more ground in 24 hours, they got the win that was rightfully theirs, and were going to get anyway because they were well in the lead before the photo-op shenanigans. So McLaren and Amon, driving that gorgeous black (with 2 white racing stripes) #2 car got the win that was rightfully going to be theirs anyway, i.e. if the photo-op crap never entered the picture, pun intended, the #2 car would've driven on to a commanding win over the #1 car that was well behind it, running at racing speeds. So in the end, the technicality that made the "wrong car" win, actually made the right car win. The car that was in 1st since before Ford emerged from the heavens in his helicopter. All these years, decades, I was under the impression that the 2nd place car, the #1, got robbed of a win because of this controversy, because the WHOLE story was something I was never told of in the countless retellings of this classic Le Mans "happening."So👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼for the #2 car driven by McLaren and Amon, sorry for thinking you were gifted the win, and at least this gearhead now knows the correct car won, in a roundabout way.😎

    • @GeriatricFan1963
      @GeriatricFan1963 Před 5 lety +12

      True, but I think the reason people feel bad for Miles is less to do with the circumstances of the race itself, and more the fact that he was the guy putting in all the work since the end of '64 to make the car quick and more reliable; the team itself loved Miles and wanted him to win the sportscar triple crown. The implication seems to be that the #1 was the quicker car since Miles was trading lap records with Dan Gurney earlier in the race. (Although as you say, #2 was ahead fair and square once they'd finally switched to Goodyears and were on an even keel) Also, Miles not getting the chance to win again due to his tragic death at Riverside I think adds to the anguish of "wouldn't it have been nice if Ken won?" Although Bruce McLaren himself died a few years later in a crash at Goodwood, so I think either way there would be a tragic story for whichever car came second. I still think what they did to Ken was (unintentionally) cruel; dangle the win in front of him but not allow him to race for it.

      What do you mean by orders. These people are racers. They for sure knew 24hrs race had to be conservative but a good driver is one who knows when to accelerate and when to be conservative. Ken was a professional driver. He would still win le mans if he was not with ford in my opinion. The fact he took ford to that historic win despite the fact he got dumped and lost his three crown. FYI i would always place my personal achievement above my company's achievement.

    I met Ken at Sebring in '65, I think, he wad sitting in his Cobra. My dad had been going there since 1956, and I was only 12 at the time. But since I had been going since I was 5, I kinda knew who all the guys were. Still have the picture I took with my Brownie Kodak of him at Sebring. The movie was great for people who have no idea how things were back then, yet having been going to all of these race ever since, well I guess ya had to be there. Dayton had a cafeteria in the paddocks, and if ya knew your way around you could go in there at 2 in the morning, and sit right next to these guys. Sitting next to Pedro Rodriguez and Graham Hill when the #2 917 Porsches were wearing the orange and blue colors was a dream come true for a 14 year old kid! This movie really does bring back great memories of When Giants Raced! The 917 Porsches were absolutely amazing!

      Well I know that but that's normal in 24 hour races and being team races but more important is Mr Miles also was one of the best mechanics and builders of these beasts and the always there test driver. That's what really made this happen and why it's so disgusting all that he did only to get screwed. Not that somebody else warmed the seat for a few hours.

      toxaq ok yeah didn’t win a race but neither did Carol Shelby when he raced F1, but Ken Miles also won the Daytona that year and he also won the USAC in 1961 he also won the 12 hours of Sebring in 1966. He also helped Carol Shelby develop the Shelby Cobra. He also developed the first Sunbeam Tiger prototype. He also help Shelby develop the GT40 MK1 and MK2 and the Mustang GT350.

    What a story! Here after watching Le Mans, great movie. I was pissed when I learnt about Ken Miles story and I would like him to win 3 trophies that year so much, he deserved it, no doubt. But, after watching this documentary, you all are also forgetting that when all Ford's were constructed to slow down (Ken Miles was 2nd at that time), all cars slowed, but only Miles didn't and because of that he got the lead. Listen carefully from 14:05. This wasn't even shown in the movie. What happened after that, when he was already in the lead, was a sad story and disaster by the organizers of Le Mans '66

      Do you really believe that a Hollywood movie, made to entertain and sell tickets, is more accurate than film coverage of the actual race; Le Mans documentaries; photos from the day; and statements and books written by the drivers? "Ford v Ferrari" was a well shot, entertaining movie, with great acting, but it was full of historical inaccuracies, including the misbelief that Miles/Hulme were robbed.

      Aotearoa Kiwi absolutely right. The movie was not accurate. Not the least of which, they had Miles setting lap records in anger before he slowed to let Mclaren to catch up for the photo finish. Didn’t happen. Dan Gurney in the 3rd GT40 set the track record early in the race. Finally, watch the 13-14min mark of this video. Amons says their car was in the lead but they slowed to 30secs off the pace per orders from Bebbe/Ford. The Miles car did not slow down and in 7 laps caught the McLaren car and took the lead. No wonder McLaren goosed the throttle at the finish line. He thought they had deserved the race. We may never know. But I certainly would not take a side with a Hollywood version.

If Miles had only 1 extra lap under his belt, they could have passed simultaneously the finish line and he still would have won.
