This was originally a video response to Christopher Nejman video showing how his top of the line Baby Lock Ellisimo sews leather before CZcams took away video responses.
Sewing leather at home does NOT require a sewing machine that cost 5 to 8 thousand dollars!
Please note that this machine will NOT handle Nylon V69 thread. This is a critical component when sewing leather. This demo was simple to show the power of the machine. Therefore, even though it has the power to sew it with polyester thread as show in this video, it will not handle the required tension and V69 bonded nylon thread that is required. Please keep this in mind when viewing this video.
Here I show you how even the low cost Singer 4432 can sew 4 layers of (3 oz) real leather successfully. It also sews through faux leather with ease - since real leather is more dense and requires nylon thread. The key is using a leather needle. Here I use a size 18 Schmetz Leather Needle.
I am not being paid by Singer in any way. And I did pay for the machine I am showing in this video.
The point is if you want to sew thinner weight fake (faux) and/or real leather then you don't need to spend anymore than a few hundred dollars to do so. Be aware that depending on the machine you chose and various other factors (like sewing 50+ leather bags a year) might shorten the life of your machine. If you plan on sewing leather daily then please consider an industrial machine.
If you want a machine that has a camera and automatically sews a straight line without you holding the fabric; can sew leather and you can afford the $8K to $12K price, then you'll want to look at the top of the line machines. BTW, they are amazing and worth every penny if you can afford one. :)
Please note that no home machine is designed for sewing leather on a regular basis. For that you need a industrial machine where the motor is measured in HP not Amps and is all metal inside. - Jak na to + styl
This video just helped me to make up my mind about buying an old industrial one or a Singer 44 on an extremely tight budget. Cheers!
You’re welcome!
I've been looking at tons of reviews but this clip was the most helpful,
Thanks! However, I wouldn't use this machine to sew leather. I was simply showing the power of the machine in this clip. Sometimes I think of removing it because people get the message that it can sew leather daily, which is not the case.

Love this machine. Making handbags with it. Figured out how to center the needle which had been thrown out of kilter when I moved the machine and accidentally hit the side of a table. Just inherited a Kenmore 158.17520 or Model 1720. Getting it cleaned & oiled as my back up! Your videos are very informative & much appreciated.
Thank you! I appreciate it.
Good video. I just purchased a 4423 for sewing leather, rucksack webbing, and a variety of other bushcraft projects. It's impressive what it does for the price and size. Thanks for the demo.
You're welcome!
Thank you. Picked up a 4423 for $105 this past weekend.. super excited!
Great!
This helped me make my final decision on whether this mechine was worth my buy or not and it most definitely is so thank you.
My pleasure!
I just got this machine over the weekend and sewed my first project tonight. I like to make warm, absorbent items for guinea pigs. I use fleece, fiberfill, and an absorbent layer so when I make these, it can get pretty thick, especially when joining all these layers together. The folded seams can be every bit as challenging as denim. It took me 20 min. to make a pocket cozy. Because the process was hassel hassle free, I made two of them! On my old Brother, it would have taken me 2 hours or more to make just one. It was a crap machine from the day I bought it brand new. When the time came to replace it, I refused to even look or consider that brand.
I'm very satisfied with this singer!
It's already more than doubled my efficiency. I've never worked with a high end machine, but THIS machine has outshone any machine I've ever used and I've used more than 50. I have tasted an automatic bobbin threader and those are nice! But for now, i am more than satisfied.
That is great to hear! Thanks!
I do a lot of leather sewing and I use a Singer Model 127 Treadle machine made in 1922---works great. These can be picked up for about $75--$100. These old machines are real work horses.
Thank you! The thread info and the settings info is so helpful
You’re welcome!
Great demo! I have that machine and it sews great, plus it sews fast about 1,100 stitches a minute where most home machine stitch 750 stitches. A Teflon foot works well for leather also.
Thanks for letting us all know.
Great video! Lots of valuable information, both in the video and in the description (which, judging by the comments, around 200 people completely missed 🤣). Thanks!
Thanks!
thanks for this video. I think I will purchase this machine now. Good Job ! ;-)
I am glad it was helpful.
This is why I bought this machine,I use it for PPG flying harness repairs, wind socks, prop covers,ect....works fantastic for what I need!
Thanks for the videos Kev!!
hi , so it has no problems sewing say four layers of webbing together , its just so much more affordable than a sailrite

Love the video! I make purses and so far have only done fabric. I am going to try leather, I have a singer quantum 9960, but think it would work better on my singer simple 2263....hope to see more videos! if you come across nice pattern for purses, please share =)
Thanks Kevin for this video. I just purchased my 4432 and I was wondering if it was strong enough to handle thick leather. Great demonstration.
Thanks! That is why I create these videos.
Wow! I just got one of their new models- 6600c. Don't plan to do much leather (just wanted a sturdy machine for multiple layers of fabric) but seeing this makes me want to try making a leather jacket! I thought for sure it would struggle with such thick leather!
Shantelly P I have the 6800C, but it is still in the box.
Thanks bud, i am going to buy one
You’re welcome!
Hi! Can you change out the needle to sew regular fabric? Or is this solely for heavy thick material?
Yes, you can. Actually, sewing with clothing is the norm for this machine - leather is the exception.
Kevin thank you for these videos they are so detailed!
How are you liking the 4432 vs the Classic?
Both are doing fine. I use them a lot when I am on the road. So far after 3 years no problems.
@@kevinsews Does this Singer machine have the power and speed to perform the stitch as shown in the video link below on denim from the 3:40 minute mark to 4:40 minute mark. czcams.com/video/DzZxTvg3nwo/video.html ?
Hi Kevin, thanks for your video, it is great!! I was wondering what type of thread do you use to sew leather?
V69 Bonded Nylon is the best option.
Hi Kevin, I would like to ask you, do you know if i can use twin needle size 8.0/100 on leather? I have singer 4452. And if yes, which foot should i use with it. Thanks a lot!
It depends on the how thick and dense the leather is. Generally, you need a leather needle as it has a sharp tip. However, a quick test will let you know if it will work. Use either a walking foot or a teflon foot. Make sure the teflon is good quality and not plastic.
Thank you so much for your review I do want to start sewing leather bags and can't afford an expensive one right now more do I know if I want to continue this hobby. I would like to know the tension and thread I should use. Thx again
I've heard lots of reports that this machine struggles to support V69 bonded nylon thread, which is a requirement for sewing leather. I would look at one of the Sailrite style machines that you can pick up for around $300 to $500 depending on their options. These machine are all metal and have a larger motor installed and support industrial style leather needles.
I have a singer model 4432 as well just recently bought. My question is how can I adjust the clearance of the presser foot ( height), so that it can take up thicker materials.
You can take the side cover off and loosen the screw that holds it and raise it.
What tension did you use on the leather in your video?
Around 7
looking hi need 4452, thanx
I watched you video about slowing the machine down. Thank you. What is the heaviest thread you have used on this machine?
V69 Bonded Nylon. Just be aware it takes some experience on how to setup this machine to use that heavy of a thread.
Also what's the white accessory behind the foot for? To sew felt carpet, what kind of needle will I need pls?
That is a walking foot or sometimes called an Even Feeding foot. Try a size 18 Needle.
Could you say, what the difference between 4411/4423/4432 models? And which machine better for leather(bags, wallets)?
The only difference is the number of stitches. Everything else is the same.
Hi, I was wondering how many ounces each layer of leather is in this video? I have a singer 4452 and need to sew about 9 oz. What needle do you suggest for this and do you think it can handle that many oz? Thank you!
I've sewed 2 layers of 4oz leather using a size 16 leather needle. I wouldn't push it beyond that though.
Question: You mentioned to make sure it's threaded correctly. The Singer 4423 I'm looking at is self-threading. Is this one not? Or do you have to change how it would be automatically threaded for leather? Thanks!
The only model that I am aware of that doesn't have the threader is the 4411. Also, when using very thick thread you shouldn't use it as it will bend the very small wire that goes through the needle.
great, thank you!
I loved the video. What is the name of the white presser foot you used?
Just a generic walking foot.
Hi Kevin, I guess you have answered this alot, but i am planning to create some handmade shoes.
Is this machine able to start my endeavour? I mean, use it to stich the leather (3oz per piece)
Also, does it ZigZag stiches leather?
Thank you in advance
+TheNMPLopes Look for a used industrial machine. For shoes a post bed machine would be best.
To answer your question, yes it will do a zig zag on leather.
Hi Kevin, Your video is amazing. I just got(today) singer 4452 and am thrilled and intend to use it to its full potential. I learnt a few things today just by watching this video alone. So, thank you and you are so kind and patient in answering people's questions. My question is: Can 4452 handle to alter the calf width in knee boots that are faux leather?
It may handle it. Make sure you use a leather needle.
Learnt? Is that a word?
@@Elvisrivers1 Chill out. We are not hear to teach spelling. 🙂
LOL@Kevinsews
Thank you for this video. Have you ever sewn biothane on it?? I have beta biothane for horse tack.
I would go to a Sailrite machine for that since they tend to be dense material.
Do you think this would have a problem going through a few layers of 1000D Cordura nylon with binding around the edges. Thinking of putting together some wallets and wasn’t sure if the binding may give this machine some problems even if the Cordura doesn’t..
Thanks
Only way to know for sure it trying it. Maybe you can find a JoAnn's store and they will have a display model you can test.
Hi Kevin, I'm looking this machine to start making some jeans and jackets (denim and I hope, leather too).

Nice … Do you think it will sewed vinyl material for car upholstery? I wanna try to do my own and this machines been on my mind ? Any suggestions ( Not trying to spend on a sewing machine to much )
Probably, but I would invest in a portable walking foot machine. Sailrite sells one, but there are less expensive versions you can find if you don't want to spend that much money.
thank you! i've been looking into this sewing machine, and was curious if it would actually be able to sew through leather. we use industrial machines where i work, good to know there's an affordable option!!
I only did this video simply to show the power of this machine. I don't know if I would use it to sew leather on any king of regular basis.
@@kevinsews thank you, good to know! i feel like most likely i'd be working with vegan leather and vinyl realistically, but there might be some real leather among the mix
Ok, thanks :-)

Hi Kevin. I just came across your video. Do you still have the 4432 and is it serving you well?
Yes it is. I have had to adjust the timing a couple of times though.
This is from sept 5 2013 sewing leather on a singer 4432. What size needle are you using. Is it a special one for leather?
Size 16 leather needle.
Thanks for the video Kevin. I need to sew some covers, bags and an awning for my boat out of 10oz canvas. Maybe over time some sail repairs (zigzag) on dacron. Do you think this machine will handle it? It's certainly in my price range. If so, what thread and needle would you recommend? Would I need a walking foot? Thanks so much.
I would go with a Sailrite machine that does a ZigZag stitch. The Singer motor can get through some thicker materials, but I wouldn't want to use it for that for the majority of the time.
Ok thanks Kevin for taking the time to reply. I may have to find a clone as the sailrite stuff is very expensive here in Australia. Cheers!
@@TassieTiki Sounds like it's a good plan.
So I've been handstitching all my leather projects, and I just moved onto a Singer heavy duty. Do I still need to hammer a stitch line before running the leather through the machine? The material in question is garment leather. So the thinner hides/skins. Nothing as thick as veg tan.
Thanks!
Use a leather needle. As long as the leather isn't too dense it show work.
Hello great tip on leather needle. What about neoprene? Have you sewn with 4432?
I own and have used the complete line of Singer Heavy Duty machines and they all sew the same when it comes to a straight stitch. Neoprene should sew fine, just make sure you have a good quality (meaning very slick) teflon sewing foot or a walking foot (aka even feed foot) and you should be fine.
Great thanks for the feedback
thinking about getting one of these for sewing hats, backpacks and such. How has it been holding up so far? Do you use the walking foot on all materials or just leather?
All 4 of mine are still holding up well. I do maintain them though.
I see most of your examples are with soft leather. How does it handle firm leather like veg tanned leather?
It may, but it would probably burn out the motor in no time. I would go with an industrial machine for that purpose.
Quick question, I have the walking foot also but when I sew, the bottom piece of leather gets scrapped by the feed dogs. What should I do?
Add some tape to the feed dogs.
Hi can I use this machine to sew thick drapes and upholstery fabrics?
It should work. However, I wouldn't use it for this all day everyday.
What kind of needle and thread did you use for leather sewing?
Kelvin Kurniadi Schmitz Leather Needle. The thread was V69 nylon.
Hi Kevin, I had problems with the noise that 4432 makes. When I bought it it doesn't seem that loud and Im thinking there might be a problem since it's my first time using it and Im still learning how to sew. It started after I sew some elastic to a fabric. Maybe I made a mistake by pulling the fabric/elastic too much while sewing or using the wrong needle. Please give me an advice.
+Klarence Faustine Decena Sorry, I somehow missed your questions. I know it has been a year, but if you still need help let me know.
yeah hahaha its ok. I took my machine to a repair shop and it just need a few adjustments. thanks for the message anyway :) I really appreciated it.
Ok, I am glad to hear you got it working. Thanks for the reply.
Hello sir! Can you pls help me how to use bigger thread in my singer 4432 sewing machine?
You need a larger needle. Either a size 16 or 18. Maybe a larger top stitching needle will help. The larger the thread the higher the tension. This can mean increasing the bobbin tension as well. I would buy a 2nd bobbin and use it to adjust for heavy thread. That way you can keep the bobbin that come with your machine for normal threads.
Do you know if this machine can use 838 bonded thread and 120/19 needle?
No. You need either an industrial machine or one of the type of machines which Sailrite based their machines from.
Hi Kevin thanks for shearing, could you tell me what 's the ref. of the needles for leather do you use there? thanks
Schmetz Leather Needles is what I use on my domestic machines.
Hi,
I just recieved my Singer 4423 and want to stitch leather fabric. I tried to setup with a 0.55 mm Polyester thread using a Schmetz size 19 needle, unfortunately for me it does not work. The thread gets tangled and I believe is too thick for this machine. I switched to a very thin thread and it worked fine, but I'm looking for a thicker thread for my projects. What thread diameter size can this machine handle to stitch leather? Reading the comments Bonded Nylonv69 is the go to, but from reading your answers this machine cant handle it. What thread and thread thickness did you use in this video, your stitches have the size I'm looking for.
I just used a heavier polyester thread in the video. I’ve been able to used V69 Bonded Nylon thread too, but it takes some skills to get it working. I found the newer 6800 series uses it without any problems.
Love ur video ❤
Pls am about to buy a sewing machine for sewing layers of cotton, denim and Leather, which do you recommend singer 4432 , 4452 , or janome 1000hd .
I heard the janome has a stronger motor than the singer
Not since they installed the LED Lights in the HD1000. Even before they did that change I tested the Singer Heavy Duty vs the Janome 1000 and I found not difference in the power of both machines.

What do you have your #69 on...the picture doesn't show? Before seeing this video, and having sewn back in the 70's with #69, and deciding to take sewing up again with light leather and Sunbrella, I purchased a 4411 but saw that it had a horizontal spool and there is no nylon #69 on small spools, I then called up singer and talked to a rep who obviously did'nt sew heavy stuff. She told me to put the cone on the auxiliary spindle, which I knew was wrong. She then said if I was going to sew with heavy thread, then use a lighter thread for the bobbin otherwise bad things could happen. But the singer manual says not to do this. I haven't received my machine yet, but should the #69 work for both top and bobbin?
I use an external thread stand because my spools of thread are for my industrial machines. I have used #69 in the bobbin, but I have to tighten the bobbin tension. I have the expertise to do this, but Singer thinks the home sewers will screw things up so they don't want you messing with the bobbin tension. This prevents support calls to them. You will find yellow paint on the bobbin screw that the factory placed on it to keep it from being changed. If I were you I would order and extra spool holder for heavy duty threads. That way when you go back to normal weight thread you can simply place the factory provided spool back into the machine. This will ensure you have proper tension without messing with the one you've used for heavier threads.
I'm sort of confused...does the spool holder refer to part of a bobbin, or are you referring to a spool stand where you put a cone spool on with a vertical metal rod which sticks up for the spool thread to go through?
An external thread spool stand as shown here: www.sailrite.com/Thread-Stand-With-Metal-Base
I would order this for using heavy duty thread: www.sewingpartsonline.com/bobbin-case-singer-q6a0764000.aspx?variant_id=282602
Great, I have already ordered on of those. Back to the bobbin...do you think I should tighten the bobbin tension for #69, an where can I find info on that, or do you suggest a quarter turn or whatever clock or counter clockwise? What about the tension on the wheel on top which is factory set at 4 they say, but can be easily reset...what do you suggest for #69...no more questions, I really appreciate your help.
Kevin - OK, one more bothersome question - I bought some Heavy Duty Nylon Canvas - Can you tell me the strongest thread and appropriate needle that this or the 44S machine can handle without problems? Thanks again!
I've used Nylon #69 when in a pinch on the road. Try either a Heavy Duty size 18 needle or a size 16 topstitch needle.
Kevin - Again, VERY MUCH APPRECIATED - Just proves again, old dogs CAN learn new tricks!!
Yes they can. Please come back and let us know the results of you using #69 thread. It will help others going forward.
Hi Kevin, In the video you say you have a medium weight thread. What size exactly did you use? was it #69 or #92?
I was simply using a jeans denim thread I use on my industrial machines when I created this video. It isn't nylon like #69 and #92 art. I have used #69 nylon successfully in this machine. You have to pay attention when winding and inserting the bobbin, but I was able to get it to sew successfully.
What thread are you using in this video?
It was just jeans thread.
I have a singer 4423 and am hoping to sew the borders of a carpet to use it as a rug. Do you think this machine would see through a felt carpet plus I layer of thin leather. Any suggestions for sewing /bonding carpet border would be appreciated. Thanks :)
It might. You need to remember this is a domestic home sewing machine and it really isn't designed to handle jobs that are better handled with an industrial machine.
ok thanks Kevin! i finally decided to buy a Heavy Duty stapler for the project which i will use along with hot glue but i'll also try the machine with a small carpet to see if works.
Okay, please let us know your results. It will be helpful for others that might be considering sewing the same materials.
Hi Kevin...I own the 4423 as well. Since I haven't spent my life (sometimes men intrinsically understand them) examining motors, I didn't realize that each sewing task I set out to do would relate to WHICH sewing machine I should use. The Singer 4423 was rated for leather, etc. That's just not true. One can do some light work here and there with the right needle and walking foot but beyond that, the motor becomes worn, like all moving parts do when overused. My Emerald Husqvarna has more power, but it still broke down after having used it on a heavy upholstery job. I got the Sailrite LS-1 Basic yesterday for my heavier work. We shall see how it goes.
I’m looking for a good sewing machine, one that will go through thick material such as denim and leather but also good for basic uses and sewing duties.

@@patricklynch4143 Hi, how did it go and what diameter did you use?
I am thinking about getting this one to sew leather. I've never sewn before. I hope this is a good place to start my experience?
It is okay for a few leather projects now and then, but if you plan on sewing almost exclusively then you should buy an on Singer Featherweight or some other classic machine that is all metal with an external motor. Otherwise, if you have the space consider looking at industrial machines.
Kevin Sews
I have an old Remington zigzag 920 with a 1.3A, external motor. Are you familiar with it?
Thanks!
Any of the old machines with an external motor will be better. If the motor burns out just replace it.
Will this machine sew through flat nylon webbing straps? I'm hoping fairly heavy duty like seat belt type
It should sew through one layer with the proper needle.
I was hoping 2 or 3 layers.
If it did sew though that many layers the machine wouldn't last long. Industrial machines are a better option.
Brother ST371HD vs Janome 423S vs Singer Heavy Duty, for working Jeans, Leather
which one do you recommend because there is a considerable difference in the final price, right?
I own the Brother and Singer series. My test shows the Singer is a bit more powerful. I've never seen or used the Janome you listed so I can't comment on it. In the end you may want to buy an old classic all metal machine. They were designed to be used by the Farmers and they are built much better to handle the things you want to sew.

I have used V69 Bonded Nylon in it successfully. I don't recommend it to beginners though. I've had many try and they failed to make it work for some reason.
@@kevinsews because of bobbin tension maybe? I have a Consew 226 industrial machine I have been sewing on for a bit, but need a machine that will do lighter and even some medium materials as the 226 won't do the thin stuff. #69 is as small as I use on the 226 right now, so I was wondering.

Walking Foot or Even Feed foot depending on your sewing machine mfg. Thread is Bonded Nylon 69.
I noted that you mentioned walking foot is that the name of the foot that comes with the machine or will I need to purchased another foot? Thanks for your help.
It came with mine in a package deal off HSN. However, it does NOT come with one by default, so you'll need to verify that when you make your purchase.
I just bought a singer 4452 and today I didn't have much success on faux leather sewing a buttonhole. Any advice? I mean the machine is a beast with other sewing but when it comes to buttonholes on leather it just wont do it
Try a leather needle.
I have a 1947 Kenmore Sewing Machine that’s so heavily made, it will probably survive a nuclear blast. It was given to me intact with multiple sewing attachments and within a cabinet. The machine itself needs a tune up and a new bobbin. I don’t have a clue on the type of bobbin it needs or where to have it serviced. The only experience I have is with Pfaff industrial machines sewing Naugahyde for marine upholstery and for custom leather goods. I use only nylon thread. Can you point me in the right direction to help me get this Kenmore monster going?
Thanks.
Give sewingpartsonline.com a call.
can you PLEASE let me know,if you use regular thread?
tx:-)
In this video I was. However, I have used bonded nylon #69 successfully in this machine.
Kevin Sews THANK YOU!😁
Hi Kevin I am looking for a machine that sees through multiple layers of leather but I will be using it for many projects. Would you recommend?
It all depends on several factors. This machine is a great value for the $$$. It will sew some leather too. However, it is not designed to sew it daily by no means - that will wear out the motor. IF you are going to sew leather say twice a week like 20+ weeks out of the year then I would go with an industrial machine; an older all metal machine with an EXTERNAL motor mount on it might be a good option too. This will allow you to quickly replace the motor if you wear it out. Plus, you can install a larger motor as well if needed.
Hi Kevin, thanks for the video. I was wondering about the thread. I would like to know what is the thickest I can go when trying to sew leather. I just purchased the leather needles after your recommendation. Thanks.
Nick Hernandez Leather requires a bonded nylon thread. I’ve made it work on my machine, but I’ve heard from others that could never make it work on their machine.
Kevin Sews thanks! I’ve been looking for videos to see if people experiment with threads, but it’s rare. Do you place the spool in any special way?
Nick Hernandez You’re welcome! Nothing special. Sometimes it works and other times you have to mess with it to get it to work.
Just opened mine and test drove it, on canvas and it sounds like an old train. Im hoping it does well with leather
Uriel Valdez Use a leather needle and if the leather isn’t too dense you should be fine.
Kevin Sews awesome, thanks
Hi, can I use size 16 needle for a 3 mm thick leather?
You probably can, but I would go with a leather needle. This is because the tip of the needle is designed to cut through the leather - the denim will rip through it instead of cutting it cleanly.
Thanks, yeah I forgot to mention 16 leather needle. Just bought a pack of 5 and all I have is 2/14 and 3/16 leather needles
Okay, give those a try. They should work fine, but if they don't then you can try a size 18.
What is the actual length of the stitch? 4mm? or more?
Max is 4mm
can you still sew leather without the walking foot?
Yes, but I would use a Teflon Leather Foot.
