- We saw a rare thing in the back garden tonight, a stoat chasing a rabbit, we only captured some of the sequence, which went on for at least twice as long. A real predator-prey battle playing out; we like to think the rabbit got away, but hey a stoat's got to eat too...

From what I've seen. The rabbit is chased to exhaustion, killed, then eaten. The stoat will not stop.
Why
The Stoat can catch the Rabbit if it wants but it's dangerous as the Rabbit will be full of energy/fight, so the Stoats run the rabbit down to exhaustion for the easier/safer kill.

@@robinhood8889 no the store just wants to make it easier because if you want to he could easily just kill the rabbit they can hunt creatures that are 10 times their size that rabbit is only about three times that would be an easy kill

@@TonyStark-nw1ll Stoats just have better stamina than rabbits. a lot of animals use their stamina to run down prey. It's called Persistence hunting, humans are of it not the best persistence hunting in the animal kingdom due to the fact we can shed heat-through sweating and drink water as we run.
Well, if you had to catch the rabbit in order to survive, you'd do whatever's necessary.
The truth is, most humans don't have much experience in the way of life-or-death struggles. We have it pretty easy, compared to the other animals.

It's been confirmed...they've been spotted in Hawaii still running as we speak. Rabbit is 3 lbs lighter after all the non stop cardio.

After such a long run, the fate of the rabbit is almost well known - killed with a bite to the neck.
Once the rabbit gets tired the Stoat will latch on her neck and will eventually sever the neck bone. It is not for the faint hearted as the rabbit will squeal and scream till the last moment. Nature is cruel but it is nature. You did well to capture the chase.

The rabbit was at half speed, it could easily out run the stoat. Just run full speed and get the hell outa there.
TotalMishap Stoats are relentless predators..They will follow the rabbit for as long as it takes until the rabbit tires and goes into shock. The stoat will then kill it...cruel way to die.
But the Stoat Never gets tired?? I find that hard to believe.. Everything can get tired..

Predators don't waste energy in the wild. The longer the chase, the more calories are burned. The more likely that the predator focusses more and more on succes. (or the next chese will be even harder...) The stoat wins. I simply must.
It feels like the stoat isn’t even running at full speed. Definitely trying to wear it down
their tactic is to chase the prey to exhaustion. The stoat has much more longevity than the rabbit, and he knows it. Once the rabbit collapses he will bit through it's neck to kill and eat it. Despite their size, they are voracious predators and they consume prey much larger than they are. They're also very clever.

The rabbit is doing exactly the wrong technique to get away. Zig zagging is a good technique to shake a larger predator that can't turn on a dime and gets tired out. A straight line sprint to the horizon is the best shot the rabbit has against a stoat.

That`s how stoat`s hunt. They have incredible stamina. The rabbit will tire long before he does, and be too exhausted to put up much of a struggle.
This is why we never got a sequel to Hop.

Rabbit definitely is more powerful, more agile and faster than the stoat, but they're so stupid that they never think to stop and try take the fight to the stoat before being hunted, and the stoat wouldn't waste time to think about any strategy to bring down the rabbit, because wearing it down to exhaustion is already enough...
But if the rabbit is pitted on with the stoat without any visible way out, you can be assured, the stoat is done for...

Running in circles, probably not a hole in the fence. But how did the rabbit enter?
Rabbits instinctively run in circles. That is how hunters get them with Beagles and other small hounds. The hounds bolt them, the hunter positions himself and waits for the rabbit to circle. If the rabbit doesn't make it to its nest first, it will circle around and the hunter shoots it. Hares run in straighter lines, but rabbits circle.

@@ivanboskovic1260 Wouldn't have made any difference if there had been. Rabbits still run in circles as a survival tactic. And if there had been a hole in the fence the rabbit could get through, the varmint would have followed the bunny through it and the chase would have continued. Bunny probably slipped under the fence to get it. Or come in through an open area if the yard isn't 100% fenced and rabbit-tight.

Unfortunately, the rabbit is stupid. If he hadn't been running back and forth, but had rushed in a straight line, then the ermine would have lagged behind. But the rabbit makes the ermine's task easier by running around.

If you watch in slo-mo, it is a stoat/ermine that is the real Pepe Le Pew style hunter. The stoat makes use of it's long(for it's size) body & it leaps & bounds rather than runs flat out like the rabbit. They are natural little buzz saws to begin with, they have such high energy, they usually outlast their prey. Rabbits are a favorite & a staple of their diets.
