Yes, ocean front homes should have never been allowed. Across the street, have at it, but the ocean and beaches are owned by the public meaning no one can own the ocean…everyone should have access. Had that been designated that way in the very beginning all over the world, maybe there would be a lesser divide amongst humans. As far as a land grab, it does sound like a way to change the landscape but what is their plan? To recapture and capitalize with high rises and private beaches, no way!!!

As a Native Hawaiian, I am disappointed and saddened that this type of construction even took place on this beach. It was far more beautiful before the development that cut off beach access and the natural fresh water flow from the mountains to the sea.

Hawaii was more beautiful before people showed up period. “Native Hawaiians” just happened to be the first to get lost and “find” this place and start crapping on it. Time marches on. This is about government over reach, not which monkey showed up first. Turn Maui into a bird sanctuary and ban humans would be an improvement but not likely to happen. Letting buildings rot and fall into the sea is not a sane solution,

Don't asked as what we think. You already know the answer. You should ask the county why they won't give a permit? Secondly, ask the county if the property is demolished and/or fall apart. Will the homeowners still have ownership of the land? Lastly, ask the county if you won't provide a permit any time soon. Why is the county holding the homeowners accountable to continue to pay for the mortgage and taxes. When in fact, the homeowners requested to have the wall reinforced asap.

Seems like the government (State/County?) is denying the owners of the enjoyment of their property. Can the owners withhold payment of property taxes as a result? It would be interesting to know if there is any legal precedent that would allow them to do that. That doesn't absolve owners of paying their HOA/maintenance fees, but it would provide some financial relief and might light a fire under the government to settle the issue once and for all. If they are waiting to take possession of the property, then they should be required to pay the property owners the market value of the property at the time that the denial of the permit occurred. They caused the hardship and the negative impact on the property values, so the government should have to pay for that.

We have been staying at Kahana Sunset for over 30 years. We used to stay in the F building but now opt for the building on the bluff where you shot the video. They have lost a lot of beach if you look at older pictures and they have in the past done quite a bit to stabilize the bluff. It is insane that the owners are still paying HOA and tax on property they cannot use. They should sue the county for loss and the stress they are enduring.

My family has long revered Kahana Sunset, since our first stay in 1977. I've stayed there dozens of times since, and have even written a novel that features it (with a fictitious name and backstory). We've sadly watched the coastal erosion take out much of the beach over the decades, but the property owners made beautiful adaptations to the grounds, and the view of the setting sun between Lana'i and Molokai is as sacred experience. It's the best kept secret in West Maui. The obstructive tactics of the County have spoiled and limited this experiences for many guests. That being said, I do also acknowledge the frustration of native Hawaiians and locals who have long been denied access to that particular beach. ( In truth however, the gates preventing access have been worthless for at least 20 years, but still.)

If this type of sea wall construction was viable, it wouldn’t be failing, would it? WE rented a unit in this complex a few years ago (one of the higher up units), and other than the fact that it had no A/C we thoroughly enjoyed this older more rustic condo resort. Is it not obvious that this situation is just another example of how Hawaii has become the most socialist state in the nation by controlling all property owners? The WEF's plans and priorities are being expanded throughout our nation, and especially in those blue states who are anti-private ownership of anything, especially Hawaii. It all makes perfect sense, as the overall philosophy of our leaders currently in power is to strip any private ownership wealth from those who have worked so hard to EARN it, while spreading that wealth to some of the needy, while keeping most of it for themselves! This seems to be part of the agenda in turning our country from a Capitalist to Socialist society, while taking away our freedoms in every way possible. I PRAY THAT GOD WILL BLESS AMERICA with major changes in leadership, but I am not holding my breath!...

The high water mark is an internationally recognized property divide line. So when they put this in, they should never have been allowed to be closer to the ocean in the high water mark. It sucks to be the owners of that place. But the county's doing what's right, which is reclaiming the land up to the high water mark.

good video. We have stayed several times in F building units. It doesn’t seem fair to not issue a permit to repair a legal seawall. Surely the owners have considered a lawsuit? We have stayed at Kahana Sunset at least 15-20 times by now and absolutely love it. But it’s sad to see this happening to F unit and to the owners.

Same thing is going on in Puerto Rico with oceanfront properties like mine. Permits originally issued, fees paid, jobs created for the construction and ongoing maintenance, taxes generated and paid, BUT if the ocean has caused damage to your Seawall or home the government says let the property fall into the ocean and will not issue a permit.

This project should have not been permitted as it was back in the day. That being said, since it was legally built, it should be allowed to be sensibly maintained. But, the slope gets even more slippery. How soon before they determine that Lahaina Shores is too close to the ocean? Or the Whaler? Or dozens of other projects? There is no doubt in my mind that the ridiculous joke of a governor would gladly take all of these through eminent domain just to $crew the "rich people" that he blames for making him a failure as a doctor.

I’m wondering if the homes on down the beach are allowed to rebuild their sea walls? There’s a $13.5 million dollar home for sale down there and because of the sea wall failing next to it, the oceans edge is nearly inside the house. It’s only about 20 or so feet from the house with nothing to prevent further erosion. 🤷‍♀️
