This song will always bring me back to 8th grade, falling for my first crush, spending the whole school year with her, living, laughing, angsting with her...and then having to move over 600 miles away at the end of the year without being able to see her or talk to her after the last school day. The bittersweet feeling this song gives me personally is, appropriate.
i grew up with this song and i love it but tbh its dark and was written that way. I mean even the video tried to help personifie the message the artist was selling. im 28 now but stilll can appreciate the masterpiece of the song.
What makes it so dark exactly?
I would reserve the adjective "dark" for something pertaining to harm. This song could not possibly be more antithetical to anything that any reasonable person could deem harmful. Yes, it's about insomnia, but by no means is it 'dark,' nor was it written that way. It isn't even in a minor key, which itself doesn't dictate what is or isn't 'dark,' but could at least help me make some sense of your analysis even if only on a musical level.
This song isn't exactly "dark". It's just Adam Young telling us about his struggle with insomnia. He says so himself when doing a breakdown of this song
I think you missed the point of the song. Yes Adam is dealing with insomnia but he's telling us to stop looking at the complexity of life and take a moment to look at the world with childlike wonder and belief in anything is possible.
this is a song, mostl likely dedicated to kids and people with special gifts ..ADHD, ASD.. this is how their minds creats beauty and colors.. I always love this forever
Man, I remember listening to this when it got released 15 years (How time flies...). This song was too innocent for the friend group I had back then. I remember keeping it as a guilty pleasure of mine. Really brings back memories 🙂 Kinda miss being 14 again, before all the grown up stuff got a hold of me. Good times!

After some time of contemplation, I see landscapes, mostly tropic forests with mountains and waterfalls,
I see them as clear, as on a photo.
I can´t keep the pictures, they come and go and I never saw theese landscapes befor.
I love this moment a lot.
After some time I feel my whole body tingles and I feel like I´m moving like a wave back and forth.
I allways think of that feeling when he sings "I get a thousand hugs from 10000 lightningbugs as they try to teach me how to dance"
Once I was able to leave my body and I will never forget this feeling.
