Cologne is a 2000 year old city in western Germany spanning the Rhine River. Some things to do in Cologne include visiting the Cologne Cathedral and doing a sightseeing cruise!
Restaurants we visited in Cologne are Bei d'r Tant Kolsch and the second one was supposed to be Bierhaus en d'r Salzgass but outside there is a whole plaza of brewhouses!
German foods to eat in Cologne include:
-Halve Hanh, a famous traditional sandwich. Name is half a rooster but there's no meat!
-Himmel und Erde, fried black pudding with mashed potatoes, apple sauce and onions!
-Mettbrotchen, raw pork sausage meat on bread!
-Kolsch, the beer of Colgone! Must try this beer in Germany :)!

Like tiggi sun wrote: It's basically raw meat but not alone. It's a dish based on minced meat flavoured with salt and pepper, nutmeg, aniseed or star anise, majoram, garlic, caraway, onions and/or oregano to the liking. There are recipes with raw egg yolk as well. This is called Thüringer Mett or Hackepeter if it's fresh. Or as Mettwurst (Mett sausage) as raw sausage, often smoked. See also: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mett
In our region is Mett a common dish for cold buffets (traditional formed as a pig or hedgehog = Mettigel) and as snack meal. Mettbrötchen (Mett on a bread roll) is an loved item for breakfast as well. You get Mett in every butchery (and Mettbrötchen in most bakeries) fresh or preserved pre-portioned in supermarkets.

Have you any regions in focus yet? In Germany are so many different ways of life. Even I, a German, can't tell alldifferences in the 16 states. And every state has several regions with different mentalities, cultures and of cause food. For example: There are a 5th season per year. In the Rhineland it is at carneval (Novembre 11th - Ash Wednesday), in Munich is it at the Oktoberfest.

every food lover (who isn't vegetarian or vegan) will love the traditional german cusine. It's hearty, filling and really good almost every dish has something to do with pork, or beef and seasonal influences .
the early winter or late autum is the time of Eintopf(basicly stews) and Grünkohl (green kale cooked for hours with a smoked sausage and bacon) then there is the 'Martins gans' a traditional dish served to St Martins day on the 11th of november
the December is full of anticipation for christmas the christmas markets are simply ....christmasy xD all kinds of tasty smells fill the city centre and you can get everthing from Glühwein(glowing wine is spiced hot wine that warm you up after a long day in the cold and tastes the best when drank on site) to christmas presents.
I personally love to eat Reibekuchen(small potato pancakes [if you want to call it that] made from raspled potatos and bacon) with mushed apples.
also a typical german winter dish is Sauerkraut with Kasslerbraten
the winter is filled with hearty food and a lot of stews and roasts.
The spring ... well if you're in the nothern half of germany then there is only one dish that will dominate the cusine. Asparagus there are many different dishes with asparagus ...and tbh I don't like it that much but everyone should at least have tried it once xD
Summer is often the time for soups and light salads(like the southgerman potatoe salad) and not so light salads (like the northgerman potatoe salad) and usually you will notice the sweet smell of bbq filling the gardens it's typical to invite friends and family to sit in the gardens and grill some sausages and steaks while drinking beer and having a good time.
German Fast food (I mean the traditional kind not mc donalds or so) is typical served in 'Imbissbuden' where you can watch the grilled chicken turning (you will understand what I mean if you ever see a german imbissbude) where you can get a grilled chicken or half of it, fries, Currywurst or normal bratwurst(grilled sausage) I would recommend to you orderring a 'mantaplatte' ( a currywurst with fries, mayo and ketchup) also keep an eye out if he imbiss is trying to sell you curryketchup as a curry sauce a real currywurst has a homemade sauce not a cheap ketchup.
be openminded and you will have a great time trying all the tasty stuff xD also kölsch...pls only drink kölsch in cologne it's their regional favorite and other regions have other beer. if you order a kölsch in Düsseldorf it could get emberassing (Cologne and Düsseldorf hate each other) or if you're sitting in the wrong pub even dangerous the Düsseldorfer drinks 'Alt', the frisian 'pilz', the Bavarian 'Weißbier' and the westfalian 'Export'. Every region has it's own beer specialities and everyone is really good

Mett is not necessarily a sausage.
There a different names to grinded pork: Hackepeter, Gehacktes, Mett.
Usually it is just the grinded pork with seasoning and it is not in shape of a sausage. It has to be fresh.
If it is not fresh and it got some procedure to keep it longer it becomes a Mettwurst, the mett sausage. And a Mettwurst can also contain beef.
And there are also curious laws to this. You are not allowed to sell a bun with mett sausage as Gehacktesbrötchen even if it is for the most Germans the same. It had to be called a bun with mett sausage, to make it clear that it is not fresh raw meat. Because for that you need special laws you have to obey. And not all places can follow them.

Mett - the seasoned raw minced pork - is eaten all over in Germany. It may go by different names. In some parts it's called Hackepeter. The only good and fresh pork is available in butcher's shops. Many of them provide rolls and onions too (some serve chopped, some serve rings) and assemble them to go.

Halve Hahn, you eat in the evening, when you have your "Feierabendbier" "end of the workday beer".
The "Bloodpudding" dish, is called "Himmel und Äd" or "Heaven and Soil". The heaven stands for the applesauce, because apple are in the sky and the soil stands for the rest. The bloodsausage and the mushed potoatos.

only thing we put on mettbrötchen (at least in the northern parts) is pepper and... onions... that about it. it doesnt need anything else (onions are optional tho, pepper is where the love is at)

Black pudding reminds me of our very own betamax and dinuguan. It really surprises me that many of their food there are somewhat the same as ours, here in PH 😍

Best Mettbrötchen: White bread roll with "Thüringer Mett"/"Hackepeter" with extra salt, pepper, garlic powder and loads of onion :D. Eaten all over germany. Mettbrötchen is not just eaten in the Cologne area. ;)

Mett is not from a sausage. It's simply raw pork meat. Usually eaten with white onions, salt and pepper. Some may add spring onion, but that's it. It's the first time I see a Mettbrötchen with red (sweet) onions? Never tried it before. I'll try it today.

its too late for Applewine but when you will see one of the perls from germany ... visit Wiesbaden :) (many Hollywood stars live(d) here or have houses here... Mickey Rourke and Debby Ryan btw ;) ) Wiesbaden is a old City from the Roman Imperium (we have the Römer Tor and many Hot Springs from this age... and at the 8. November is here a Wine Fest :D ( too much Alkohol :D ) i think Wiesbaden is one of the Citys that nobody knows that... and from here comes you light to Frankfurt(39km) and Mainz(16km) :D oh and the Castles here are nice... (Biebricher Schloss und Schlosspark, Jagtschloss Plate, Freudenberger Jagtschloss) and we have a Animal Park( its a Zoo but they have only Animals that lives here in Germany .. Now and past)... its not the biggest city and not the coolest but its very nice here :)
