  • A rare copy of a centuries-old book regarded as the most important work in the history of science has sold at auction for £24,000.
A first edition copy of Sir Isaac Newton’s Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy in English went under the hammer in Hansons Auctioneers’ Library Auction on October 13 - and smashed its estimate.
The 291-year-old book, which comes in two volumes and was published in 1729, had a guide price of £8,000-£10,000 but reached £24,000. It was bought by a private international phone bidder.
Watch auctioneer Charles Hanson sell the book on Oct 13, 2020
