I think the truth of the matter is Jess married too young, her Dad was far too involved. Nick really wanted someone more mature and ultimately Jess started an emotional affair with Johnny and it fell apart from there. I don't think Nick was horrible to her, perhaps more frustrated but in episodes she could also be quite cold to him. It just didn't work out, no one was to blame. They seem much better suited to their spouses now.
