When We Were Young Festival disappointed me

- I went to the infamous When We Were Young festival this past weekend. While the actual event itself was very functional, I think the festival model is predatory and there are better ways to experience live music.

warped tour - Zábava
it wasn't all bad but I won't be going next year
Perhaps they will learn from this years and grow better for it.
I'm staying home too it's like you took one for the team.
Off topic, but your hair looks good
Monsters of Rock here in uk and Glastonbury you would love Richie these are full weekend events where you bring your own tent. They are awesome events. 💜🖤
I'm a few yrs older than you, what some may call an elder Emo. I can tell you that every year older, the less desire you have to be in packed crowds getting price gouged at every turn. The irony is in the name of this one.....When we were young- this would have been a lot more fun. I'd much rather just get really giod tickets to see a legacy band directly or check out a smaller new artist. Of course we will always love these big names but without supporting newer artists, the genre along with different types of "rock" will continue dying. Big festivals tend to only be packed with the same legacy bands who would have headlined 10 or 20 yrs ago.
This is no different than an ultimate warped tour...
Lol i couldn’t agree more
That's the sad part. I'm pretty confident we're at the point where there never will be any newer rock artists that ever hit it big. Because rock is now clearly being cemented as "legacy music" by the industry, similar to what happened to jazz when rock took over. Whether we like it or not, rock has reached the end of its cultural relevancy. That doesn't mean rock will stop being made or people will stop listening to it, but it means hardly anyone will care about new bands or scenes.
The final nail in the coffin for me is the fact that all the bands from the various rock scenes from the '90s to mid/late 2000s are now being put onto nostalgia festivals by large corporate entities (When We Were Young and the Sick New World festivals in particular). There is no new rock scene to speak of, so the music industry will continually view rock as legacy music marketed to an aging audience.
If there is ever going to be another revival, it sure is running late...
@@trvekvlt7196 I just believe that we have reached a point where scene rap and various metallic trap, cloud rap, etc. (Ghostemane, lil peep type stuff) is the new wave of popular alternative music. Mixture of trap and rock/alt. is what I believe is the most popular rock is gonna get nowadays, aside from bands that have been around
Old. Old. Oollld
Attended the 29th show and loved it, you make valid points throughout the video and I thank you for that. Hopefully if anyone is going next be prepared 1. Bring a camel pack or clear bottle with a clip. 2. Eat prior while they do sell food keep in mind food is pricey ( you can get small snacks in if in pockets ). 3. Look at the map see where everything is though it may not be the same next year. 4. Don't sit please if you know you get tired from standing and don't go to the pit area if you are an easily tired person. 5. Don't bring things you can't carry as mentioned lockers are small and from what I've seen are pretty far especially from main stage. 6. Plan who you want to see and who you're willing to miss as mentioned they gave us set times use it wisely (we decided to stay at the main stage all day. Me and my gf enjoyed it fully even with being hungry and thirsty a good portion of the day we are 34 and 29 if age helps for anything mentioned mentioned.
I scrolled through shorts and found you! You got an amazing voice flipping from clean to distorted so effortlessly!
I sure do miss when bands used to tour regularly and go to decent venues. Big festivals don't interest me anymore.
Love your hair, love your look, Love everything! And yes, massive out door concerts can be brutal. Great advice on waiting for a tour show.
Interesting format, loving the tongue in cheek, e-news/reality soundbite vibe
I was in the GA pit the entire 13 hours. I had 1 bottle of water and no food, but didnt leave because i knew i would never be able to get back in.
The late night meal after must have been AMAZING! I know after every show I always chow on some junk food. But damn, what a trooper.
Sheeeeeesh thanks for sharing your experience! So glad I didn’t go to this. My brother is going this weekend and I can’t wait to hear about his experience as well.
Yeah I would love to hear these bands but I will wait until they come near me lol.
I really enjoyed this breakdown 💯💯💕
I just watched some videos about your "scandals" and I immediately had to find your most recent video to say this. As a fellow creative, my life melts with my art and I'm a product of my scars. You should never apologize for how you heal. Keep killing it. Subscribed.
He's literally a sex pest. You really wanna put yourself in the same category as him? He's not a creative, he's a thief.
@@Ennarmreal a sex pest? I don't think anyone is without flaws. Plus, I don't give a shit. You're just proving my point.
@@seananthony1127 I don't understand why some people think interesting artists have to be perfect people. If they were great, wholesome people, their art probably wouldn't be as interesting
@@vinceeager8553
With all the people in the scene who have done bad things, Ritchie cheating on his ex 6 years ago is not even worthy for people to get upset about.
Jesse Lacy of Brand New,Dahvie Vanity of Blood on the Dance Floor,Austin Jones,Ian Watkins of Lostprophets,Joel Madden of Good Charlotte, Mike Lambardo,Joel Faviere,William Control of Aiden,Ben Hopkins of PWR BTTM,etc
While some of these are alleged 3 of these guys are currently in prison detective (Chief Inspector Peter Doyle said Ian Watkins of Lost Prophets is perhaps the most dangerous sex offender he has ever seen) one was in prison and considering that 25 year old Joel Madden was openly "dating" a 16 year old Hillary Duff he better hope that the stature of limitations is up.
I constantly get him mixed up with someone else everytime I see a new video from him but then remember he hasn't fucked up that bad or in a while, plus his content is just weirdly amazing. In a good way.
I have recently found your cover music and love it, after hearing your review I cannot wait for more content. Thank you for everything!
My friend told me about your channel. It's only a talking head video format, but I watched it until finished without feeling bored. Love your content!
Love the content and your music. 🏆
10/10 much respect dude.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one left dissatisfied af
Every time I ever went to warped tour they always handed out set schedules with the exact time and stage every band would be on
I know they did, but not at entry. You had to literally find a hidden tent that had them lol.
I’m glad I got to see My Chem when they came to Newark. When the line up for this festival was shown of course I freaked out. This is my middle school dream but I knew the outcome of going to something like that. I agree with your last sentiments. I’d rather save all of my money for when they come to my town.
I definitely feel all these opinions are valid for sure thanks for the tips if they ever decide to do another one of these
I was there Sunday and all your criticisms were dead on. It was so hard too see or get a decent place for bands on the main stage all day. It was wayyy to crowded but it was still super fun and you were still able too see the bands on the smaller stages pretty well.
Thank you for this review. I almost cried when I decided I didn’t want to go when my friend had gotten extra tickets and offered me one. I’m 36. I have 3 kids. These bands are my literal angst teen outlet. I so badly wanted to go but when I really thought about it I decided I’d rather go to my sons soccer game and church on Sunday… and not be stepped on and smashed up on by sweaty people only to see ant size versions of the bands I love. I stayed in my little corner of Vegas and I’m so happy for it 😂
I feel you. Same age, same home,I just can't do shows like I used to....just growing up i guess. Work and whatnot
Went to the oct 29th show and was able to plan out show times really well luckily. I think they sorted out the kinks from the prior weekend cause food and drink lines were minimal if you spread out. There were alot of people who would get in line at the closest tents and ignore rows further away. As for getting up close i didnt even bother at the black and pink stages. Just too much work. I saved the pits and crowd surfing for the smaller stages and was able to have my fun there. Panned out pretty well.
Man I’m good at staying at home and watching a live. It sounds like hell going to a festival.
I will never again go to a big music festival. It was a nightmare.
I cannot begin to explain how much I enjoy hearing you talk
I went to the Festival too, and I spent over two hours in the merch line. I missed multiple perfromances I really wanted to see and even missed part of MCR's performance. It was insanely packed. I also had bought the VIP tickets, it wasn't the top tear, but the one with the merch bundle and I never got anything that was listed as part of buying the tickets. It was a frustrating day; lot of highs and lows.
Thank you for this review, Richie. This is exactly what I assumed the experience would be. Sounds like hell.
You are amazing. A true artist, deep creativity and beautiful soul. Thank you
Love the content!!!!!
Thanks for your input, I miss warped tour.
This is like the real world interviews on MTV lol I love it!!!
I went on the final day and had a great time! The food vendor line was only about 5 minutes and the bathroom line about 10 minutes. Yes, standing for 13 hours straight sucked, but I knew what I was in for in that regard. I sacrificed my body to not miss any bands. The drinks were ridiculously overpriced but that was to be expected like any other festival sadly. The food was also overpriced but not quite as bad as the drinks. I knew it was going to be cold at night but jeans and a Jean jacket over a T-shirt was warm enough for me. The jeans were too warm in the afternoon but I rolled them up which helped. Overall the weather was as nice as it possibly could be for Vegas. The bathrooms were clean which was greatly appreciated since I at one point I saw a guy straight puking all over it and it was clean next time I went.
While festivals have always been crowded and overpriced, something has changed since before the lockdowns. People. Before, everyone was happy to be where they were. Yea, we always had "those guys" who were idiots doing idiot, annoying things. However now it feels like everyone is trying to make up for lost time, they're going to get their money's worth, and it's all about them. People are no longer patient or kind. I've really noticed it at some german shows/festivals earlier this year where there's been behaviour I've never witnessed pre-pandemic. It's really a shame since live shows are an absolute love of mine.
Contrapoints vibes are hella strong in this one. I dig it
Every band I was interested in, I ended up seeing in their own tours and they were all magical, including 2 nights of MCR floor seats. Fests just aren't for diehards. And I don't see any fest worth traveling and staying overnight any city that isn't my own.
Also the costs of festivals
10/29 wasn't nearly as cold. I was relieved, also found it so much easier to get around that day. We skipped out on both booze and merch and instead bought our merch outside the venue.
I had a lot of fun on the 29th. it was pretty chaotic at times, crowds were packed, lines were packed, and everything was super expensive. Completely missed AFI and ADTR because I wanted merch and food. I was able to make it up to a decent spot in the crowd for the pink and black stages after I started working my way up during Death Cab but it was suffocating.
Solid review, thanks.
I went on 10/29 and thanks to all the brave folks who shared their wisdom from the weekend before, had a great time! Ended up staying at the black stage barrier all day in the GA pit, which I would not have even known about if I hadn't seen other people posting about it. I was stoked to see all the bands playing Black and Pink stages, but do wish I had been able to catch Silverstein and AAR. Standing for 13+ hours was absolutely brutal though. Would do it again in a heartbeat but not really interested in next year's lineup
As someone who dislikes both crowds and waiting, that sounds absolutely miserable xD Glad you were still able to get some enjoyment out of it!
I bumped into you at WWWY! Don’t know if you understood what I was saying as I was in a rush and i’ve got a strong british accent but was nice to meet you!
yo this camera angle and this whole personality is hilariously entertaining and I can't tell if he is being serious or what lol
That's the desert for you. Boiling by day, freezing by night.
Loved your review. I went the second weekend. I enjoyed myself because I didn't have high hopes due to a bad feeling about the festival since I bought tickets. Since I had this bad gut feeling for months before, I purchased separate ticket to see My Chemical Romance at another venue (who I had been looking forward to seeing the most) that way I knew I would get a good experience. If I didn't do that, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the festival at all. I definitely wouldn't buy tickets in the future. Too many people there like you said. And if I would have known that basically the front of both Black and Pink stage would be inaccessible, I probably would have not got tickets, or got VIP somehow. I felt completely ripped off.
I got my head bitten off on twitter for saying anything negative (even in a joking manner) about this damn festival
@@XxRoseFromTheDeadxX I don't even know how to respond to this 🤦🏻♀️
I 100% agree! Great vid
I loved it it was truly worth it for me. I am elder emo I guess at 32 I went about 1pm saw TVGirl was amazing stood in line for merch and then immediately went to the black and pink stage. TBS, ADTR, Bright Eyes, BMTH, Paramore, MCR all amazing! I went to grab food during Avril’s set no line at all sat to eat then went back to main stage my spot was “nose bleed” as you said but I was fairly close to the stage! Loved every minute danced and sang my heart out.
Also stayed at the Sahara which was amazing bc literally across the street no pay for parking plus the convenience of the monorail. Literally the best weekend.
The only complaint was the merch line so ridiculously long and no security so ppl were cutting then they recently posted how you can now buy it online. So dumb but anyhow!
Sorry your experience was not the same.
As a former concert venue manager my anxiety is a 30 out of 10 imagining the absolute panic attack nightmare behind the scenes at that last minute venue…
I'm a preacher now that wears suits and ties but believe it or not I used to be the emo/scene kid in school
Cool! 👍🌻🎃
So?
Me and was at when we were young sunday 🤘🏻
Me too*
Thank you for this honest assessment. 🙏🏼
Where do you get your clothes from? I go to festivals all the time and im always looking for cool looking outfits like that, you look cool as hell. Love the channel btw thanks for the great content
That hair is fucking dope dude 🤟🏻
I am just so thankful I got to see the used; have been my number 1 favorite band since I was 4 years old in 2003’😅 AND DUDEEEE THATS the thing about Nevada/deserts. It was warm at day and by night my little shorts were murdering me! I almost missed knocked looses’ set waiting in the merch line for an emergency sweater that I’m actually wearing right now!! 😂
I've never been to a festival and you're only confirming all the reasons that made me hesitant... sucks to have it confirmed but I thank you nonetheless 😭
At least I didn't get a taste of it back in the day just for it to be ruined now
I couldn't agree more! 🖤
I’ve been to several warped tours in several states , they always gave set time sheet
Yeah, but I think they mean like a day before the acrtual. Warped tour, you didn't know until the day of and once you got in. And THEN at 12pm middle of the day you had to make your decisions then and there.
What do you think about the "Sick New World" festival that just got announced?
Sitting at home streaming is even better.
Hay man I have only recently found your music, not the kind of thing I’ve ever been into but I will be painfully honest I’ve been really struggling the past 6ish months and listening to your stuff has really helped so just thanks for that, it has really kinda helped just shutting the doors at work and having it on loud has made being inside my fkin head bit more bearable. Have you thought about doing a cover of chop suey by system of a down? Think you would be amazing at it! But any way thanks for just making a difference for me
I'm not sure which albums your listening to, he has an impressive list of much being independent. I love the empress album, I'm not going thru anything on a romantic level of strife.. but it's so damn beautiful. Check out mercy kill if you haven't already done so. It's a favorite and our boy went full Ken doll.
You were spot on!
Nice review. Good to know
love you Richie !
“Cold pizza, is still pizza” No truer words have been said.
We payed security 80$ for 3 of us to get into GA pit without waiting. So take cash even tho it’s a cashless event cuz it’s worth it
I'll settle with just rewatching emo era music videos on youtube. I can party in my own pit (living room).
MCR karaoke night? I like your style.
LOVE THE OUTFITS!!!!!
Great advice!
I love your monochrome look 🖤
Sitting in a crowd full of standing people and getting mad for getting stepped on is hilarious 😂
I had a freaking blast!! Money well spent in my eyes.. food was the longest line I waited in, maybe 30 minutes for pizza (that was actually good) bathroom lines were like 5 minutes and there was no beer line.. :) I was mind blown that people waited an hour or more for merch that was literally the festival setlist.. BUT I got to see some of my favorite bands from my youth and it was in freaking Vegas!! It did great crazy packed for the main stages at the end of the fest though
I purchased mcr tickets for Detroit as soon as they went in sale Feb 2020 and waited 2 whole years due to the pandemic to see them. It was worth the wait. They played a 19k+ stadium and i had the best time.
This is the kind of conversation I would try to get out of at a party.
I’m surprised I didn’t see you during MIW’s set. I was way up front though
How are the most expensive seats? I was thinking about going to Sick New World fest with system of a down headlining
Concerts used to be affordable. I took my 13 yrold daughter to see Korn this year. Super fun.
I'm still in therapy from what happened in a warm tour bathroom 💯
I had VIP and it was sooooo worth it! I had a great experience minus the long food lines, I didn't eat until 10 pm lol because of that but I would have much rather seen all the bands I wanted rather then eat.. but yeah the food/drink lines were long. The bathrooms legit cleanest I ever seen and the fest in general honestly and I've been to about 10 different festivals. (Emo/Rock/EDM/Rap)
Honestlyyyyy. Like, I'm good at home, I'll just go to individual shows of my fave bands 😅
Well said, Ritchie.
Wife and I stood in the GA Pit the whole 12 hours we were there on the railing that divided us from the VIP section and saw everyone we wanted to ❤️ it was amazing with a great view! There were people waiting for hours to get into the pit though but we got there early and staked out claim!
I was able to get front row to AAR then found a gap in the fence to sneak in and get front row for MY chem!!
if people want to get comfy watching all these big names in one place, wait until the festival over and watch it on youtube the next day hehe
hi I just found this channel because this aesthetic just drew me in but I don't know anything about the emo aesthetic. can someone explain this genre? im basic af but this just absolutely drew me in
I got to see a large portion of the bands on “when we were young” at aftershock, earlier in the month. Including MCR and bring me the horizon. It’s really worth it to shop around different festivals, because this wasn’t my experience at all at aftershock.
I went to both lol
Love your look!
Rock Fest in Cadott Wisconsin is a three day outdoors rock festival featuring 65+ mainstream band as well as new bands. Covering many rock genres. 7000 on site campsites and a dedicated fan base. I have been going there for the last 15 years. My group has never had a bad time. In 2022 there were 75000 + in change registered Fest goers.
Lol those blacked out contacts make it impossible to tell if you're looking directly into the camera so it looks like you're just staring off while you talk....adds to the look actually
Can't afford to go to big shows so I started going back to little shows and playing pool. It's fun
Now I don't feel so bad that I missed out.
My friend and I went and personally we had an absolute blast. Right after the all American rejects we went to the black stage to get a decent spot and we did. We got a pretty damn good spot especially considering how many people eventually showed up. My biggest complaint was that I had no data signal cause of the hot spot Vegas is during the festival. Also there's way better ALT than driving to the festival like Uber. You paid $60 to park I paid $45 for an Uber to get me there and back to the hotel.. and went with my friend so we split the bill so even cheaper.. oh also the locker situation was total bs ngl. Within 15 mins of the gates opening there was no more lockers available. But it was fine to hold our merch throughout the day no biggie. But we meet a lot of people who was supposed to be at the festival but it was closed because of the high winds. Like easily 150 people. They was okay and very high spirited which was cool. My thing for next year they need to improve on is to over prepare. More water, lockers, space, ect. Just more smaller things they didn't do this year. Also yes you at weak when it comes to the cold lol it wasn't that bad like yeah it was a tad chilly but I tossed on a long sleeve shirt I got from the merch stands and I was fine lol. But personally like I said overall my experience was amazing
i agree, there was wayyyy to many people 😅 people couldnt even watch any set not even the screen sometimes (luckily i had 4" platforms which made me 6'5) but it was absurd... wasted over an hour in a merch line just for them to re-release merch online... food lines were insane. you're better off waiting for your favorite band to come to your city
I don't go to festivals either I only go and see my favourite bands on tour
Exactly why I don’t go out anymore 😋
At least you got to go. I went to Las Vegas from Florida just for them to cancel the day I was supposed to go
Why do people think going anywhere is going to be fun. Most things suck lol. Better to just stay home
To each their own.
@@faith4disney True 🙂
I personally agree. Most of the things that bring me joy can be done via indoors/in the comfort of my own home. This may sound degenerative, but the only time I really go outside is to take out trash. On a similar note, there has been times where my family has dragged me out the house to go attend/do something. And, unsurprisingly, I come back home VERY unsatiated. Guess I'm just not "meant" for the public, huh?
@@XxRoseFromTheDeadxX Yeah I don't go places. I used to when I was in my 20s, but I'm 40 now, and home is better lmao
I went to LouderThanLife and that was a perfect festival experience
Not gonna lie, if it weren't for my personal experience I would make the argument it wasn't worth going to.
Booked hotel was less than a mile away from the venue. Spent a lil over 200 on my ticket. Walked in through the Artist Entrance to get into the venue. Sold said ticket after the fact. Crowd surfed my way to the front a lil more than left of center to Black Stage around 4 p.m. Soldiered through all the sets due to being adamant of not wanting to lose my spot - so stood near the same spot for 6+ hours. I'm tired. In pain. But overall, I had a good experience. Key word being good as with all the luck and pros it was a hell of a test of endurance like you cited.
I think they should've stretched out the festival, sounds like it was 1-2 days when it should've been 3-4. Inkcarceration was 3 days, you can buy the whole weekend which does save you some money, or just one or two days. And I'm bewildered by a line for the pit area. At Inkcarceration there was no line, if you wanted to be up front you did so, tried to get as close as possible. There was thousands of people and not everyone wanted to be up close and in the pit. A lot of people set up camp way back and chilled on whatever blankets they brought and just listened and watched from there. There was no one saying we had to get in line. It works out when you let people be people and not try to meddle in things for money.
I don't know. I really enjoyed the shows. And i wasn't even there until about three hours in! Yes, tickets were incredibly expensive since by the time my spot was up in the wait list, all that was available were hotel packages. Even then, I felt that the value exceeded or at least matched the price when I was there for the 29th. I got to see the bands I wanted and a few new ones. The food was expensive, but sort of reasonable considering all the other food options on the strip. There were covered places to sit down away from the sun and it was easy enough to "navigate" deeper into the crowds as people left areas for other bands, resulting in an incredibly epic spot for the Trinity of Terror bands. My sister and I arrived sort of early for Paramore, but of course it was packed for Bring Me The Horizon and stayed that way for MCR's closing the show. Even still the view was better than being in a nosebleed section. It was a shame that most of the show that I saw was on the screen in black and white while Gerard was dressed in bright red (an effect used often in black and white movies and shows, especially the Addams Family.) I estimate that where we were in the crowd could have fetched at least a $300 ticket before the fees. It might have been different if I was able to go see the band when I was actually younger before they split up. It's worth considering that at the time the festival was made, MCR had done two shows as a reunion just before the pandemic and had their international tour canceled while being vague about being back together. We, the fans, were never given any assurance that there would ever be anything more than a one-time reunion kick pressured by WB. By the time they hit active status, the tickets were long sold and couldn't be refunded. All in all, it was a great experience. A few things could have been better, but it wouldn't have been very realistic.
Just as I was thinking we weren't getting to see Scorn .. 🐈
I believe watching CZcams live concerts will be the future for me. I have a decent surround system and not the tallest person. All in the comfort of my living room.
Are you going to the sick new world festival next year?
well said! I did attend the recent wwwy and yes mistakes were made on our part. xD. 2023 coming up though.
