  • This is my conversation with Lutz Graf-Ulbrich. It took place on 1/23/2021 from his home in Germany.
At the age of 16 Lutz Graf-Ulbrich aka Lüül founds the Berlin cult band Agitation Free together with Christoph Franke, Michael “Fame” Günther and Lutz “Ludwig” Kramer.
Lüül in JapanSupervised by avantgarde composer Thomas Kessler they work at the Beatstudio and create - together with Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel - a new style of music, later known as Berliner Schule. With this band he records 3 albums all in all and tours Near East just after graduating spreading German progrock internationally.
After the band split in 1974 he joins Ash Ra Tempel to produce further albums and play concerts in Europe. In between he also tours and lives with Ex-Velvet Underground singer and Warhol superstar Nico who has a big impact on his life. They tour in Europe and the States playing a legendary concert at the GBGB`s together with John Cale.
Back in Germany he starts as solo artist with Morgens in der U-Bahn as his biggest hit. He also works as composer and performer with Rocktheater Reineke Fuchs winning the Senatsrockwettbewerb and also participates in the award winning documentary Nico-Icon.
Since 1995 he is member of 17 Hippies, a Berlin based folkband who excites listeners of any age. With their very unique style they succeeded to gain cult status, not least with their performance in Andreas Dresens award winning movie Grill Point, for which they also composed the soundtrack. Even a worldrecord playing 17 concerts with 17 Hippies within one day is listed in Ulbrichs credits.
Besides his on going work with 17 Hippies he produces further solo albums. His cd Damenbesuch gets the award of Deutsche Schallplattenkritik. In 2006 he releases his autobiography Lüül- ein Musikerleben together with cd Zeitreise.
Last year is a reunion with Agitation Free for some concerts in Japan. Group member Michael Hoenig and Lutz Ulbrich are exhibited in the Tokyo Tower Wax Museum within 216 personalities of history and Showbiz. A new designed and mastered backcatalogue of the band follows in 2008.
In between Lüül always finds time to tour with his own band, promoting his last cd Spielmann, but center of his musical life are 17 Hippies. Meanwhile they have become global players and perform worldwide with big success.
