This was super helpful; I see you posted it 9 years ago, so I don't even know if you'll get this comment, but I have a table that has some chipped veneer, and someone gave me some mahogany veneer to patch it with, but I've never done it before, and these 7-8 minutes were so informative, from the taping to the clamping of the straight edge to the table, to chiseling out the filler and a bit of wood. Thank you so much for posting this. I've got my fingers crossed!
Thanks Jacqueline! I have a lot of videos showing veneer repairs, it can be tricky but pretty basic. Good luck with all your projects!
Thanks Jacqueline! Good luck with those repairs!
Enjoyed your video Tom, and I liked that you included your dog & cat.
Thank you!
I agree
I discovered this channel a year or two ago and it really is one of my favourites. Tom Johnson, you are a true master in a field where very few true masters show their skills - I don't know if you are unique, but I do enjoy your videos, which show such skill and judgement (I'll even forgive your American English ;-) )
Wow, thanks! Honestly, I think there are a lot of people out there doing good work, I'm just the one foolish enough to make videos!
@@johnsonrestoration As long as somebody keeps your channel up, your lessons and examples can teach generations of people. Otherwise these skills could be lost in our modern world. Don't minimize the importance of what you are doing here.
Beautifully done! I love your dog working at the computer.
She's addicted to cat videos!
What a job and the shine on the table! New camera showed it all off to perfection. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Gorgeous!! love your uber-sharp chisel. So cozy to watch :) Chisel /gouge sharpening is a skill in itself.
Thanks! yes, sharpening is the key!
Wonderful, what patience and skill you have - its great to watch a master craftsman at work!
Bill Holmes Thanks for watching!
Tom, it's great how you simplify a daunting task for many. I had the same color challenge with a patch of veneer and stained around it as you did on your piece. Turned out perfect! Thank you!
You're welcome!
Tom,
Thank you for putting these videos up.. i've learned so much.. keepem coming!
I've seen several of your videos and I particularly like the simple, practical little tips you demonstrate such as using tape to act as a hinge when you position the veneer when gluing.
Thanks!
First of all, I love your black cat and black cats rule. For some reason, I have a unreasonable aversion to Veneers.Watching your videos is change my mind understanding how wonderful they really are. So thank you for that please keep making these great videos.
You're welcome! Yeah, veneers are great. And Blackie......sweet girl
It turned out pretty good. Enjoy watching you work and explaining the process. Looks great.
Thanks!
Patience of a saint! I'm learning a ton from these videos.
Thanks, and you're right, it takes a lot of patience. I work at it!
Excellent workmanship!!!
Thank you!
Man I wish you were in the northwest, well, next door actually. You're the best. thank you for the lessons.
Thanks, I love the Northwest. and thanks for watching!
Am trying to patch veneer on a 100 year old cedar chest and your video helped so much! Thanks and fantastic job!
You're welcome! That makes me very happy!
I may have immediately liked this video from the intro cat alone.... This was amazingly helpful, I have some spare veneer and a damaged desk that I was hoping to patch and this was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for sharing!
I'm so glad! Good luck!
I thought I watched every video but I guess not, great job on the patch and the finish came out great.
Thanks! I’ve got a lot of videos!
That ended up looking nice. Good job sir and thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it
The joy of watching someone whose an expert makes it look simple but there’s years of experience here I am sure
Thanks! yes, true

+Howard Ryburn Thanks Howard
Unbelievable! Can even see the patch. Great work. ❤️
Yes! Thank you!
Wow! Amazing work! I really enjoy watching you work.
Thanks!
I almost didn't watch this because I don't like videos with "filler" sections that don't apply to the subject of the video itself. I'm glad I went back and watched, it was what I was looking for. Good video overall!
Thanks!
Mr. Thomas you are the best ever. I never tier of your videos.
Thank you! And I appreciate you watching!
I think it looks just gorgeous.
Thank you!
That table looks great!
Thank you!
I agree with Daniel Miller's comment. You, your experience, knowledge, and profession are unfortunately a dying breed. If you were "next door" I would pay to learn and work with you, for that knowledge and experience. I am a log home finisher. The log structure is erected, and then I take over. My long term costumer is highly intelligent and a perfectionist like me. He likes to show me pictures of cabinetry and millwork he finds online and say "i want that, build it" I was taught when I was 18 years old, "if it's not good enough for your home, then it's not good enough for anyone else's" I'm 36 years old now, yes still a young punk, with a lot to learn.
Thank you Eric for your kind words. But I'm not going to be an old codger and agree that it's dying. There has to be people coming up through the "ranks". My daughter is one of them.
My son is a green oak timber framer currently 10 years green oak experience with time before that at college getting industry qualifications in wood machining...there are young ones coming through...perfectionists who know how to cut immaculate joints by hand and using machine tools.
I'm not sure if you have any interest in doing this but I would love to see some educational videos where you just talk about specific topics like veneer. Why is it used? When did they start? What are your tips for restoring them? What's a good one/what's a bad one. That kind of thing. Maybe just me but I would love see videos like that
Thanks! These are good ideas, I'll work on that and see what I can come up with.
Coincidentally, as I looked at the sheet of veneer you used, I wondered how, when, where, and why it was made.
Thanks for posting this, you inspire me! I have been wanting to learn how to refinish furniture and I am having a hard time finding someone to teach me. Please keep posting videos!
+abigail Mracek Thank you! and I will
Beautiful table. I didn't expect that patch to blend in. What a surprise!
Thanks! I was as surprised as you were!
@@johnsonrestoration Your work is really beautiful and you're a natural teacher. I've watched a whole bunch of your videos because they're interesting and you make me want to learn more.
You continue to amaze!
Thanks!
WOW that is amazing work!! WOW, when you unclamped, I had my doubts but then...ya, I can see the comment below mine about "what sorcery is this" I also feel that way.
Thank you!
Ok that was very well done, you can hardly see the difference after you finished it all, very impressive!
+bustex1 Thanks!
Just what I needed. Thanks, Tom.
You're welcome!
Love what you did. And your CAT!!!!
Thanks!

Thank you!
Looks amazing! Great job
Thank you!
Excellent job! Wish you were closer. My grandkids gouged a veneer antique bed frame. 😢
Sorry to hear that! But at least you get to see your grandchildren! A lot of people have been unable to
Yes, my grandchildren are far more valuable to me than any piece of wood, no matter how beautiful.
very skillfully done sir .I didnt think it would match at first but you blended it masterfully.
Yes, I was surprised too! Thanks
Excellent job, mate. I have to admit that I thought that the patch didn't match the table, but after you finished it, it was amazing how good it looked. You couldn't really see the patch. Well done.
Thanks!
Wonderful work! Thank you very much for sharing this with us!
You are welcome!
What a gorgeous table. Beautiful restoration!
Thanks!
The way I match difficult veneer is by taking a picture of the patch area, print it out full size and cut out the area to be patched. Then simply place the photo over your veneer to find a section that matches best. You might want to try it in the future.
Thanks! That's a great idea! I'll try it
The dog changing the resolution is really funny. Nice video!
Thanks! One of my favorites!
Awesome tutorial Tom.
Thanks!
awesome video, your work has opened up a whole new way of thinking for me in terms of wood work. I hope to gain some talent in this field as I have long desired to start some of my own projects around the house. I'll definitely keep watching more of your uploads!
