  • You might notice on the filming on this one I was starting to feel better... and I'm pleased to say I'm now fully on the road to recovery, but, no skipping yet... :D Here is a cool technique I saw made out of wood, I haven't seen anything like this made from polymer clay, so I thought I'd give it a go & share my experience. It's easy, a bit long winded with the make, bake, make, bake method- but the effect is so cool :D
    Enjoy! :D

    Baking Polymer Clay:
    UK instructions for baking- it's all in Celsius not Fahrenheit, which is why I don't always quote times & temperatures. I recommend using Polymer Clay packet instructions. However a good tip is to bake no higher than 100 degrees Celsius. It's better to bake at a lower temperature for longer, than higher for shorter.
    Larger clay items need longer- always check after 10 mins- sometimes things fall over in the oven & can be rescued at this point. Watch for burning! Especially white as it's quick to burn (don't know why...) and can turn yellow!
    Once out of the oven wait for it to cool before thinking it's baked- if it feels soft to touch, you can poke a finger nail in it or a finger print, back in the oven it goes!
    Electric ovens work better as the temperature is even, gas oven temperatures fluctuate do not keep a steady temp for baking polymer clay.

    This was exactly what I needed! I’ve been meaning to make coasters, but couldn’t decide on a design. I love this cutout idea and I’m definitely going to try it out. Thank you so much! Looove the bloopers 😂

      Thanks for watching Kristina! Yeah I loved this one, more will be made at Christmas, got so many glittery ideas 💡 😀 I never ever, (to this day) plan what I'm going to say, so I just waffle- so there are always bloopers haha - my partner says I speak my own language 🤣🤣

    Those turned out so cool. I’ll have to try it. Love the sparkle that the pigments give to the pieces.

      I never used to use gloss of any kind, I always found it went on badly & also dried badly too! But this was good. I had fun with this project :)

      @@GailJonesPolymerClay loved the soap trays and clock u did.
      Ive had a go at polymer glsy but it was the baking time i need to get right.
      Also had a little go at air dry clay which i need to practice more with.

      @janesommerfield-nx4fv aww thanks! Baking can be tricky when you first start. I don't often state temperatures as UK instructions will be different. My good tips are- use an electric oven at 75 degrees Celsius, bake for 10 then check. ( always do this just incase anything falls over!) Then bake for a further 20 mins. Something else I've just started trying is leaving it in the oven with the door open to cool after turning off the oven. I then press a tiny nail mark to see if it goes in once cooled- if it does, back in the oven for another 15-20 mins. I make alot of big things, so jewellery & small things will be different. It's best to bake at a lower temp for longer than the other way round! 😉 hope that helps

    Hi Gail. The first coaster you made, did you bake it a second time with the top layer and trim?

    • @GailJonesPolymerClay
      @GailJonesPolymerClay  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Molly- yes thats right- I make it on a tile that I can put it straight in the oven! This is what I call a make & bake project as you go back to the oven with different parts 😁

    Hi there, what clay did you use? Thanks x

    • @GailJonesPolymerClay

      Hi 👋 I mostly use the brand FIMO. It seems to be the most popular brand in the UK. However, sculpey is also excellent. If you meant the colours, I can check & let you know.. 😁

    • @danw32
      @danw32 Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks! I have some fimo but it's soooo hard to warm and mold so I'm currently faffing with sculpey souffle. Thanks so much! 😊😁

    • @GailJonesPolymerClay
      @GailJonesPolymerClay  Před 5 měsíci +1

      @danw32 Fimo professional is softer. Second-hand clay is a nightmare as it's often alot older. You can do a few things...Add a small amount of baby oil, chop up in to small pieces, squash bits back together in to a ball, roll till smooth, then cut the ball in half and place back to back to re roll ( this makes sure the clay is soft on the inside) to check it -roll to a log and try to bend it, if it snaps, it's still not conditioned enough. Hope that helps. I buy a lot of bulk older clay as it's cheaper, so this is a method I've used a ton of times. Oh, and one last thing, if you put too much baby oil in, you can leach it out by rolling it in printer paper - works a great! 👍

      @danw32 Před 5 měsíci

      Oh wow that's brill. Thanks so much! I'll have a look at the fimo professional and chop into bits. It seems to get crumbly like Wensleydale 😂 I'll let you know how I get on! Thanks ☺️
