I like your story Zach. I also have been doing art since kinder garden. An all throughout my school years. Even went art college.
But most of first jobs starting in my 20s. was in photography labs, finish process. Then in photography.
Then the last 15 years was in paint industrial, mixing from raw materials, leaning all the ins and out of paint, and main job was color matching paint. Then later in stains and grains for air craft furniture touch up, witch led to me again color matching, and doing faux finishes with auto mechanic paints. witch later I left because I'm now 52, and not able to handle the heat booths, and pressure of heavy production. Im slow, with ADHD or ADD I usually get off task with daydreaming or not paying attention . main complaint is I'm too slow or I do not listen. I have to say its probably true, but not because I want to be that way, It just is. Not within my control. Its gotten worse over the years. loosing jobs over it. But the point i am trying to make, is Art has always been apart of me, with something that comes natural to me. going to school for it was just an adventure for me to more about it, but for acrylic pours I just started them in this last year. Yes I understand paint, an all that, but i picked acrylics because i needed a water base material to work with in my home. I have always admired how paint flows in all materials of paint or color. Themes and ideas are always a given for me. I don't feel anyone needs college, but it nice to experience it. I feel anyone is a artist regardless of how they achieve it or learn it, if its truly their desire to do it. I am trying to get a studio up and going. I struggle on a small paycheck, in retail full time raising my daughter, now 17. I'm ready to be full time once my studio is done an I have more materials to work with. I don't know if its a business i seek, or just doing art. But I'm tired of loosing good jobs because I'm slow, and my artistic mind , sometimes interferes with rules on a job. But thank god the clients overruled and loved my work. At least I'm told before getting fired, that my art my work is very well done, but not productive.
So long story short, how do I build myself in a art community an make some kind of extra money to at least buy materials and create. and eventually find other jobs online as a illustrator or something.
I'm not sure how long my retail position will last. but usually after 2 years they start looking at your speed and production . it always happens.
I want to prepare a backup income, and would like to try it from home through the only thing I can do , is art. I think all my work years have conditioned me with a great deal of process and knowledge that will allow me to more creative on professional level.
How do you make money, and how do you get started or make friends in this community.
my email is tmalonesea1@gmail.com my phone is not on , for while. but email is best way to communicate.
