I discovered Todd in the early 70's before I even understood his backstory. I just liked his music, and none of my friends liked him. So, what's most rewarding for me is to see Todd nowadays being so appreciated, as he so deserved way back when. He was perceived as some wacko artist, or one or two hit wonder, take your pick, but he has ALWAYS been so much more.

  • @1mathfan

I'm biased because I love Todd, but I appreciate the way he thinks about the music business. If you have ever seen him live you know he puts everything he has into performing. He's an amazing human and I'm so glad younger musicians appreciate him seemingly more than ever.

I’ve been going to Todd concerts since the early 70’s. We are both the same age & come from the same area in the country so it’s been easy to relate to his early choice of groups/music that he was inspired by. I too had a band at the same time as Todd (1966/7) but never got the break we needed to get better. IMO, Todd is an amazing artist in terms of musical writing, styles, production & performance. He’s the most successful & under appreciated artist of all time somewhat like Frank Zappa but different styles. He’s very intelligent, humble (got to chat with him on one Ringo tour), smart & a gentleman. A great performer will change his style of music as time goes by & push the envelope in a musical way which is what Todd has done. He’s produced some great music (The Tubes, Meatloaf, Utopia, Badfinger, Grand Funk RR, etc.) besides his own music & still, to this day, he’s not in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. It boggles my mind that his wizard/genius has just been nominated this year (2020) & my guess is he won’t get in. I just want to thank Todd for his inspiration, talent, kindness & for all the great music he’s made for himself & others. He is a true Wizard......

Great hearing TR interviewed , looks great for 70 , and he"s still having fun , he"s especially
great as a live performer , as is evident of Utopia"s current tour"s , their really " smoking " ,and enjoying the live shows ,it's great , really cool ! TR"s An Elpee"s Worth of Production"s CD further demonstrates his genius , an assortment of various artist & some really great tunes he produced ! All the years of LSD experimental journey"s ,did"t seem to fry his brain skills , his memory , especially for his age , is great , the trips however made for some exceptually creative music , I must say , some of my favorites , although he keep"s expanding year after year with brilliant music that I will love for life , looking forward to TODDSTOCK , FEET DON"T FAIL ME NOW !!!!

I guess I'm way behind... I didn't know they were putting these up on YT (I didn't really know they were shooting video of these interviews, LOL!), but I see there's a TON of them! I need to find time to catch up on these! I'm always missing the show!
Todd looks fantastic for 70! I saw him 3x over the years, an acoustic show, about 2004-ish, co-headlining with Joe Jackson - his playing was great, but his voice sounded shot. OTOH, when he went out with The "New Cars" in 2006, he was fantastic! But his show in Valencia at the end of 2017 was bland and lifeless. It was wandering and he seemed in a bad mood, like he REALLY didn't want to be there. It felt like it was probably just a bad day, though. And there were a few good performances. I'd certainly go see him again.

The fact they've been so poorly produced has been one of my main gripes about Tame Impala. Then it seems you haven't read much about Todd. Performing is his bread and butter artistically, and now he depends on it to make money (as he says this in this interview), but in the '70s he had several high profile tours (most notably the RA tour with Utopia) where they spent much more money than they made.

Would be interesting to know, if Todd would've produced Kiss at the time of say their first album, if it'd somehow been offered to him in 1973. I'm guessing, probably not likely he'd not seen enough quality in those early songs.

felinefanII Eddie Kramer produced the 5-song Kiss demo (which ROCKS! - find it here on CZcams), but the record company set Kiss up with eventual debut LP producers Kenny Lerner and Ritchie Wise. Not sure Todd was ever considered.

Mummer versus murmur. I'm guessing the mummer is an English term and murmur was because Stipe did just that, he murmured

That was the concept behind TR's No World Order -- if you got the right format, you could re-mix it. But I hate programming, so mix it for me, please.

I know but later on Jonesy said he was a big fan of album-oriented Rock. In my opinion I feel that he and the rest of the pistols say that stuff to just be even more fly in the ointment and separate themselves from the other well known punk bands! That lot was always joking around never find the truth

There were many bands that were very good everywhere at the same time. Unfortunately they couldn't get air play because of crap US hair bands and crap pop bands.
