LSWR T3 Class - 563 hauls its first train in 75 years | Loaded test run - Swanage Railway 03/10/2023

  • Having completed sufficient mileage on light test runs, another milestone would be reached in the eventual return to service of LSWR T3 Class - 563, as it progressed to its first loaded test runs on the Swanage Railway.
    The LSWR survivor, built in 1893, would haul three return trips through the Isle of Purbeck over the course of the day. For the first return, the locomotive worked a standard length set of 5 carriages. This was lowered to four for the following tests.
    Having been withdrawn from service in 1945, and last steaming in 1948, this marked the first time 563 has hauled carriages in over 75 years. The light at the end of the tunnel is growing ever closer for the Swanage Railway Trust, who own 563 after the NRM deaccessioned the locomotive in 2017. 563 is due to enter public service shortly, once sufficient loaded tests have been carried out successfully.
    563 stands as testement to all those in the Swanage Railway Trust's 563 Locomotive Group, and at the Flour Mill workshop, for their demonstration of dedication and devotion in carrying out the overhaul.

      She's a grand old lady, that's for sure. To steam again in the 21st century must be a huge privilege for those who worked on her and the Swanage railway for having her on the line. Beautiful engine and in the green livery too.

    Living in Australia I will never get to see it as I'm now too old to travel so thank you for the wonderful footage. It truly is a beautiful and elegant loco and a great credit to those who worked on her. It was a wise decision by the NRM to entrust it to Swanage.

    Great to see it back in operational condition after all the negative comments when the NRM gave it to the Swanage railway in the first place about how it was going to left to deteriorate in the goods shed at Corfe. I for one am glad that the NRM let it go as it's my firm belief that these locos should be operational where possible. I think it's very sad that it's unlikely City Of Truro and the V2 for example are never likely to run again because of the NRMs rather dogmatic attitude that everything must stay as original which in itself is an anomaly as I doubt that there is any steam loco in the world that's truly original. Well done to all at the Swanage railway.

    I can’t imagine how proud the Swanage Railway are at being able to revive the T3 and see it pull trains again. All it needs is some proper LSWR coaches to make it complete.

      I agree with every word. The practical problem is that even if the vehicles could be located the boiler certificate of 563 will have expired long before such a train is available. With a few exceptions carriage restoration has lived through the locust years.

      When Pendennis Castle returned to steam, Didcot loaned her to several railways and I have a feeling the Swanage Railway will do the same with 563..

    Superb video.
    One interesting visual effect I noticed around 3-4 minutes in is that you can very clearly see the exhaust steam from the chimney alternate direction slightly, changing from angled to the left and then to the right. I don't think I've ever seen that so clearly before in any steam loco footage.

    • @gavinwhitelaw86
      @gavinwhitelaw86 Před 8 měsíci +3

      Yep, I saw that too. Could be a short blastpipe with the exhaust from each cylinder hitting the petticoat just before exhausting the top of the chimney or a trick of the camera angle? I was appalled at the NRM deaccessioning this loco but what a marvellous job they have made of the restoration. I was wrong!

      That said, the loco has been noted to be exceptionally smokey even when static. I'd suggest blame lies more with the coal quality than the fireman.
