Thank you for covering the Windows Vista Extended Kernel.
Thanks to the project, I no longer see proprietary software as a monolithic black box that the user shall never question or modify. I have learned many things working on this project.
The user mode seems to have hit a dead-end (outside of a few simple functions and bugfixes to be done); most further improvements will have to be in kernel mode to allow the use of many Windows 10 applications, as well as Vulkan and NVENC with Vista-compatible GPU drivers (they actually need DirectX kernel functions introduced in Windows 7, though NVIDIA does not mention the resulting reduced functionality for Vista users). Those will take some time when combined with other commitments.
Nothing else runs better on my HP Z600 and I also have Windows 2000 Professional, Server 2012 and Debian Linux with CDE running there. I also tried several flavours of 10/11 and was thoroughly annoyed with them.

Funnily enough, I’ve felt they haven’t been truly cohesive since 9x. (But even that had some 3.x holdover elements. MS can’t shake their technical debt!)
XP and Vista both didn’t rock the boat too much, so most of the 9x elements like scroll bars and progress bars could be replaced in-situ, but for me that always just served to highlight how little had truly changed since the shakeup with 95.

@@MadafakinRio Aero glass was also less glitchy. Something's weird with how they've implemented the rounded corners in Win11, causing some programs to behave a bit erratically, especially when maximizing or going fullscreen (Firefox is really annoying as when making videos fullscreen I now have to do it twice, otherwise it's offset, showing my desktop along the top and left sides of the screen). They also didn't feel the need to completely rewrite the task bar in Vista, so it was still as functional as it had always been (it's bad enough I have to use Start11 for the start menu, but having to use it to get a small taskbar with non-combining windows and full title names I feel is even worse).

Windows 7 was really just a Explorer refresh applied to Vista because it's premier was so bungled by the system requirements changing and the OEM's managing to sabatoge it's rollout with the Vista ready PC program where most of the systems were minimum system requirements for Home Basic and lacked the GPU needed to start Aero and the new Window manager. But OEM's are the reason why Windows Home Server and half of why Windows Media Center failed. They refused to build systems that fit the use case Microsoft was aiming for. Media Center was also killed by the broadcasters killing tuner cards and the death strike was a DirectTV usb receiver getting canceled for Windows media center. Because the networks didn't want people using DVR devices that weren't provided by the cable company.

This is very similar to what the Windows Compatibility Toolkit does which has been there since XP days where you can have the versions reported to a specific program vary depending on what you wnat it to see - you can also do other things like remapping file paths so programs see the file system differently than reality.

The memory requirements for Vista compared to XP were absolutely massive. You could run Windows XP on 512MB fairly well but you'd need 2GB to run Vista without problems. I've used the Extended Kernel for Vista A LOT, it's nice to see you make a video on it!
The reason why software for, say Windows 10, didn't work on Vista is because the Extended Kernel installer re-routes Windows Vista system files to Windows 7, and even then, not all of them, which is why Windows 7 functionality is best, although not on par with Windows 7 proper.
When I've experimented myself, for example, Direct3d 11 wouldn't work, and neither would Windows Installer 5.0 (for some MSI files), would be nice if Win32 somehow worked out a way to get those working too
Also, to the countless people wondering if Steam works: yes! However, the browser doesn't fully work, so you'd need to enable nobrowser, and you'd also need to get the pure extracted files, the installer doesn't always work

In fact there is already a thing for Windows 7 (called VxKex) but currently the development is still at very early stages, so only few applications can effectively run with it (+ it is pretty buggy at the current time, the developer is currently rewriting the whole project, so it will happen).

Pretty funny that mods for Windows 95/98 that do a similar thing are seen as things for Retro computer enthusiasts but mods for Vista that do the same thing are seen as people "just messing around".
It's kind of disappointing that the Vista/7 retro community still hasn't risen yet.

  • @BilisNegra

This is really cool. Bit of a shame it's a 64-bit thingy only, as that was not taken for granted with OEM installs back then, contrary to, say, Windows 10, whose 32-bit version is a bit of a legacy rarity. I have a couple of Vista machines, but if using Ex Kernel means I have to install a new copy of Vista on them, well, I suppose I might as well install 7 instead, which has the same hardware requirements.

I'm going to have to look into an extended kernel solution next year when more programs start dropping Windows 8.1 support. I have very little desire to leave 8.1, even if it leaves me on a vulnerable OS. I'd much rather deal with security vulnerabilities rather than a OS that is so bad I want to pull my hair out using it (10/11)

      @salamiwallnut Před rokem +2

Although windows 10 has gotten good-ish in the last few years and isn't getting new buggy features, I still agree with you. For me windows 8.1 is the top.

As a fellow 8.1 user, try out MX Linux! It's by far the best Windows alternative I've found. Rock-solid stability, lots of in-house built system mangement tools, and an advanced hardware support kernel are just some of its features.

Security vulnerabilities are really overplayed when it comes to the average home user. Just stay away from shady sites, use an adblocker, and don't download random junk and you'll be fine.
