  • What? Google Voice can help with privacy? What a concept! In this video we will learn about techniques to make use of free services from Google to actually help manage our privacy through the creation of new phone numbers.
I will guide you through the thought process so you can implement this as you wish. The end result will be the flexibility to segregate identities properly so they are not connecte don the Internet.
    -----------------
    YubiKey
I recommend using a security key such as the YubiKey, rather than the most common 2FA, SMS text message or a one-time code that is sent to your phone. For a limited time, use code ROB10 for $10 off any purchase of a YubiKey 5 Series key at yubi.co/Rob-YT. Promotion ends Dec. 31, 2020.

This is a nice idea. I hope that it works for others. However, I'd like to make others aware of a couple "out-of-the-blue" odd problems they may experience caused by linking their phone number to google voice:
    1. When calling cab companies for service, most of them tell you that they're not sending anyone because your phone number isn't showing up on their system - and it looks shady.
    2. If you get a brand new (or replacement) credit card or debit card and you call to both get it activated and assign a PIN number to it, you will encounter an odd message that goes a little something like this "We're sorry we are unable to process your request at this time. Please contact your financial institution about this" What the automated service here isn't telling you is that it's reading a completely different phone number (of where you're calling from) than what the bank has on file and is denying you access to move forward.
There maybe a whole host of other services that you regularly use that have automation in place to confirm your phone number and compare it to what they have on file (as you dial) that you'll run into problems with by linking google voice to your regular phone number.

Good advice with the exception of google's TTS capabilities. The T&Cs for all google services clearly indicate the company reads emails and converts voice to text, which may also extend to live call data. It should be assumed google hangouts>PTSN, soon to be Voice>PTSN only in 2021 must be able to identify a person by voice. The most telling indication of an expectation of privacy on "the Internet" should be is the reverse DNS zone still being in-addr.arpa. for all reverse lookups. DARPA still retains a level of control over the tech they built for a good reason and it has nothing to do with commodification or empowering the average person. This where IQT's investments in tech are a glaring clue. Physical acecss is the best layer to compromise in the networking model.

I'm a little confused and would've appreciated some examples. So your GVoice number is the one you give to trusted people? And the month-long temporary number is the one you give to untrusted people and services? That temp number will no longer work when you deactivate it and activate a new number, right? You're going to have to give your GVoice number to any long-running services, like your bank or insurance company, so I don't see how this protects your privacy, unless you go into every service you're subscribed to and change your phone number every month. Is that what you do?
In other words, who do you give your GVoice number to and who do you give your temporary number to?

Isn't Google stopping Google Voice any day now? I thinking HangOuts IM will still work, but not phone or video. They are changing to Google Duo for video chat, I think. Google is sending out notifications to users about this, but it is a bit unclear to me.

@@nabull3683 It certainly is and I think Rob wil agree. One of the main differences is that the (encrypted) messages are stored on Signal servers only until they can be delivered. After they have been delivered, they do not exist on Signal servers anymore, only on your phone. When you delete them from your phone, they are gone.

Way too much work and having just one phone is already getting on my nerves and I'm doing online banking etc. for years and years already, even got my phone stolen once that was so secure that when they switched it off they wouldn't be able to get it working again with or without my sim card so it's completely useless to them and even without a sim card I can still remote access it and I have so many different safety that I don't even bother to go so far as you do with a burner phone and all that.
It's already complicated enough and safe enough and I never ever had any problems doing my daily things online.

Lol this is the only video in youtube with Goo gul Voice and privacy in the same title. But seriously, the so called new features in Android 11 show their stepping up their game. Things like one time permission granting, automatically reseting permission after app inactivity, sold as benefits to users show their real arrogance. "Things like safety apps, the user doesnt need to see permissions on" and we know that automatically reseting permissions will be to Allow for goo guls built in data collection framework, etc. Oh how do they know the beta testers preferred the new one time allow permission option? These people are collecting data everytime you touch the screen at this point...
