      @Tool Shed Companies need to treat the animals humanely, that's all there is to it. Not to mention humans are omnivores, meaning they can eat vegetables just fine and sustain themselves without eating meat. Most of the poor in India barely get opportunities to eat meat in a single year yet they're not dropping like flies. There are better, more morally and environmentally conscious ways to harvest meat than this.

      Actually, you're more likely to get a food-borne illness from produce than you are from animal products. Think of it like this - yes, those animals are covered in mud and dirt, but the product that we consume (namely meat) is never exposed to any outside environment until after the animal has been slaughtered, which takes place in a separate and very clean facility. As opposed to plants, which are exposed to outside elements the duration of their growth until harvest.

      Worked at a slaughterhouse when I was younger. Family kind of place. We did smaller orders. One family brought the couple beef and couple pigs in. During the processing... the pigs were FULL of abscesses. Looked closer and every abscess had a BB pellet in it. They had a semi-special teenage son that has been shooting these pigs their entire lives. It was a tough situation. What do I do? Should I report them and have their special needs son brought to charges? Well... I thought about it and the other employees wanted to keep things quiet. I couldn’t do that. I did contact our country officials and had them meet me. I explained the situation and they went to the parents and had a talk with them. They had no idea the son was doing that and the son wasn’t officially charged/prosecuted but the parents volunteered to hand over the two BB guns/pellet rifle the son had. So... hopefully that brought an end to his reign of terror. Animals deserve the same respect that we give to other humans... well... what we SHOULD give to other humans. PS... we noticed the abscesses when we began to process but didn’t notice the BBS and pellets until we began making sausage. They quickly stuffed up the sausage grinder and then we started looking at the rest of the pig(s). Just full of BBS and pellets. So sad 😔

      It’s like chickens. We literally bred the instinct out of them. Now that people want grass range chickens. They took them all and let them outside.
      Birds of prey just swooped down and took them sometimes two birds at a time.
      Honestly we can’t save these animals even if we let them go. They have no instinct to survive. Read about it’s. It’s horrific.

      @@Cand0212 I totally agree that many people don't have a choice than buy cheap products, particularly low-income families with growing children. But if these groups were the only ones buying cheap animal products, there'd be no necessity for industrial farming on the scale shown in the video. Meat once a week would fully suffice. But how many people with average or above income do you know, who consume way more than that?
      Also consider, if it's realistically possible to supply the amounts of meat, eggs and dairy we currently consume via ethical farming .. how much farm space would be required, how many ecosystems would have to be reduced in size to make space for grasslands etc. How much methane would be released as a result of animals feeding on low-energy grass they need to ferment (methane being a by-product of this), as opposed to high-energy fodder (soy, maize etc.) that requires less/shorter fermentation in the animals' digestive systems.
      Also consider, that if ethical farming was cheaper than factory farming, the corporations would already do that. Meaning: ethical farming will make meat more expensive, which will go largely at the expense of people with low income. They are gonna suffer no matter what, unfortunately. If consumption drops, meat etc. will become more expensive. If the production is made ethical, meat etc. will become more expensive. The solution here is to make sure they have more money, for instance, by increasing minimum wages.
      No matter how you spin it. If we continue to consume these excessive and also unhealthy amounts of animal products that we consume today, and with a growing world population, there is no way the supply could be ethically farmed .. because destroying nature to make space for good animal farming still is unethical.

And I'm seriously thinking of becoming a vegetarian, because I know from years of personal experience that all farm animals are a lot smarter and perceptive than we ever imagined. I live in rural Nebraska, and in the last 20 years these huge factory farms have been springing up all over the rural parts of the state. They are causing massive water and air pollution problems. Most of them are owned by big corporations and investors (many of them prominent politicians in the state). They practically control the state and local governments. In this case of county governments, they work to get people elected who will change zoning laws and reduce local regulations on these operations. (One of the big things out here is getting rural county Boards of Supervisors to declare their counties "livestock friendly"). They move into these rural areas where there are no jobs, and offer cheap wages and horrible working conditions. And as to this guy using a drone---they REALLY freak out over that! The CAFO owners are vigorously lobbying the Nebraska Legislature to pass "No Drone" laws. Ok---but if you aren't doing anything wrong, than why do you have to be afraid of a drone flying over your operation, I say?

I know it's not perfect, but I am pretty much removed from the supply and demand that is driving cruel practices. You can still use animal products without cruel practices. Take honey for instance, the bees love making honey. You can help them produce more than they need and take the extra. No harm is done. Same with eggs. The chicken will produce the eggs naturally. It can go to waste or be taken for consumption. No animal suffers. Same with milk. You can have a perfectly healthy cow and not milking it can cause problems, so we can take the excess without harm. Just FYI, vegans & vegetarians have gotten a bad rap in recent years because of the actions of the few extremists. There IS a “happy medium”. I live in a tiny, non-agri-town in the Poconos, where REAL farms still exist and thrive. While I am primarily a vegetarian, AND am low income, I have been able to eat healthy, locally grown & produced veggies, eggs and occasionally local meat. I’m legally blind and don’t even drive; so, if I can do it, so can others! It just takes some research on what’s available locally-you will likely be VERY surprised, I know I was.
    I thought factory farms and large agri-business were my only options..I was WRONG! Let’s put these monsters OUT OF BUSINESS! They not only treat their animals like dirt, their largely immigrant, minimum-wage human staff suffered horribly last year during the COVID surges! They need to be completely re-structured or shut down altogether!

    • @saffronlafromboise

      exactly. i don’t even have a proper job and live in the lowest of low income housing, yet i’m able to be vegetarian (trying to go vegan). people say it’s “too hard” because they’re too comfortable with their current diet/lifestyle. they don’t want to put in easy work & that’s on them 🤷‍♀️

    • @elaineg60
      @elaineg60 Před 3 lety +1

      @@saffronlafromboise It CAN be done, usually pretty easily. I just wish more people would wake-up and realize the damage-economically, morally, physically & culturally; these greed-driven factory farms are causing…and that WE DO have the power & strength to put them out of business. I actually got the names & numbers of some local farms, explained my situation, and for either free or $5 or less, they drop off a small bag or box of veggies on their way to a local farmers market each week. Another farm that has pigs and chickens, drops off some fresh meat every few months. They even offered me organ meat for my kitty…but the spoiled lil brat won’t touch it! 😸 YES it takes a few phone calls and/or emails; but there ARE still SOME decent people left that are willing to help out. I admit, I also try and tip people or make goodies for those who help out. It’s something I’m more than willing to do in order to avoid supporting monsters like Hormel or Perdue.
