In theory I talk about the mixed feelings that Squidward has for Spongebob, the episode dying for pie is ranked one of the saddest Spongebob episodes and I can see why. The main character was about to get killed by his best friend. The pirates in the episode are using a special technique to slowly conquer Mr Krabs by selling pies to Squidward

If Squidward was able to survive a pie bomb to the face, who's to say SpongeBob wouldn't have been able to survive if he had eaten one?
Considering squidward has canonically tanked a nuke, and survived a beating from omniman, along with tanking the pie, and spongebob has consistently shown to be more powerful than squidward, he'd definitely survive eating it
Even a small explosion would do massive damage in the confined space of your guts.

There was no guarantee that the pie would end up at SpongeBob’s tho, and Jim also survived being chef. I’m pretty sure the ‘11 times’ refers to events Krabs witnessed in his pirate career and the explosive pies are a common thing in the pirate sector to kill an unsuspecting enemy from the inside out. They were loading at the Krusty Krab because either they had paid a visit to Krabs as old acquaintances and dropped the pies or they actually use his ingredients to make the pies, hence Krabs is so knowledgeable about it despite the pies being silent killers
@@beak_essence- yeah and his question of "why did the pirate sold the pies to Squidward" is so dumb honestly. For 1 the pirate guy he was talking to, is trying to correct him and explaining how the pies are bombs. But when Squidward mentioned 25$ the captain seized the opportunity to get a quick buck and sold Squidward the pie. And by the way the captain moves and talks it absolutely proves that, that's is the case

Favorite moment of Squidward caring for spongebob, when a customer yelled at spongebob for forgetting his Drink in pizza delivery.
The thing that strikes me as a clue is that they are LOADING the pies INTO the ship at the Krusty Krab. Personally I find it plausible that Me. Crab MADE and SOLD the pies to the pirates who could be contacts from when he was himself a pirate.
When he was in the navy as a cook he could of developed the bomb pies for war use.
He just didn't want to admit that he invented such an dangerous, silent and potent assassination weapon.....that's a scary thought thinking he runs a backdoor bomb shop.
Plus he freaks about about the upcharge of 25 which is a giveaway sign of krabs greed

If that was the case then why'd he almost eat the pie given the (theoretical) circumstances of him supplying them the pie bombs?
I once had a co-worker that annoyed the piss out of me.

Mr Krabs was in the Navy, so it makes sense he would have a grudge against pirates.
In hindsight, this episode doesn't make sense because of two specific scenes.
SpongeBob: "(smacks lips) Mmm, mmm, mwah. (rubs stomach) Thanks for the pie, Squidward!"
Also SpongeBob: "jk, I never ate any of it, I was saving it to share with you."
Maybe it's because: The pirates snuck in, Put a pie there, But forgot to load a bomb into it. Spongebob saved the original Pie Bomb to share.
I think SpongeBob just acted like he ate the pie to surprise squidward later, allowing them to share a touching moment together
I feel like the original plan was to have Spongebob legitimately blow up from the pie and then just be fine afterwards, but they felt it would still be too dark for kids so they changed it. I also definitely think it was written with poison in mind as the weapon but that was too realistic for Spongebob so they made it a bomb-in-a-pie.
The idea of Squidward accidentally poisoning Spongebob and then spending his last day indulging his whims, only for Spongebob to indicate he may have known all along and just wanting to watch the susent is such a beautifully tragic idea, even with the cartoon slapstick and the "haha just kidding" fake out at the end to stop the kids from crying.

Mr Krabs seeing 11 different times where a pie was used as a bomb Doesn't really mean that he was the caused of it, Correlation doesn't mean causation. And if Mr Krabs was the one who hired the pirates to give the pie to SpongeBob, then why didn't they sell the pie earlier rather than them not even caring about Squidward until he mentioned the 25$? The pirate captain was clearly just trying to earn a quick buck based on the way he spoke to Squidward in the episode
With your last theory of Krabbs tricking Squidward... Was the hospital in on it too since they both saw this particular senario happen 11 times.
i believe the explosive pies were actually meant to be used in a battle. as poorly aerodynamic they are, they're very explosive. accuracy wouldn't matter, just getting them away from you. I appreciate all theories tho, since there's no hard evidence for any final answer
Spongebob has the memory of a goldfish, i hope it all really was a set up cos for some reason he still wanted to share/eat the pie despite being told it was a bomb. Also apparently he ate a different pie that we didn't know about. *shrug* oh well.
I've always thought Mr. Krabs used these pies to m*rder enemies in the war. He was a cooker when he was young at the SS. Diarrhea, so he basically used to cook food to cause illnesses and even d3ath.
Personally, I have never seen the "brother" relationship between SpongeBob and Squidward. K1lling is a terrible act that leaves a great scar in your soul to most people even though it was accidental. Squidward would have been very sad and regretful if he hadn't met the person who ate the cake.

I feel like..he hates him, but he doesn’t hate him so much that he wants him to die.
I can see Mr. Krabs finding out about the pie early and telling Spongebob not to eat it (without explaining why), then playing along so he can force Squidward to bond with his coworker and appreciate him more.
Straight up hiring the pirates feels a tad excessive. Specially since they are canonically his enemies (given their second appearance in the show)
Though I can see Mr.Krabs having a hard time doing it, but, maybe he did pay the pirates (or maybe hired some people to dress as such) and had them to be by the Krusty krab and give squidward the pie and it HAD happened like what you mentioned about telling Bob about the pie and had squidward try to bond with Bob.
Possibly but would SpongeBob really listen if krabs told him not to eat the pie though? We’ve seen how impulsive SB is.

The lore of Spongebob is messed up. Like in the old sponge sessions Mr. Krabs says that he once served in a war and was part of the navy. However in another episode he says his grandfather was a pirate and was once a pirate. But then in a newer episode it shows that Mr. Krabs was in the navy and fought pirates. It’s doesn’t make any sense.
Maybe becoming a pirate was a hobby he did after serving time in the navy?

After watching dying for pie, I use the plot of the episode to describe if I really hate someone. For example, if I really hate my siblings, would I try to make their final hours good before they die? If it’s a yes, that means I secretly care about them
My oh my goodness 😰 thought Mr. Krabs was my favorite character in SpongeBob SquarePants. 🥺🥺
This is a pretty cool theory, but a major problem with the situation this episode presents is that it’s been shown time and time again that SpongeBob doesn’t feel any pain and pretty much can’t die. He’s even been sliced, diced, etc. so many times that it’s a running gag. Not to mention, there’s points that go beyond Squidward hiding his true feelings for SpongeBob (something like an elementary school crush with a bully liking the target secretly), where Squidward flat out rages at SpongeBob and tries to/does attack him, showing genuine hate towards SpongeBob. Although I do get for the most part the show is episodic and doesn’t have much continuity, but it’s still weird to see the characters change drastically from one episode to the other.
I think squidward almost had a mental breakdown over the risk bc he couldn’t live with the guilt. Even if he didn’t die, he would be to blame and that would be the ultimate hit to his ego

I loved this episode as a kid and still do, I never saw it as depressing 😃😃 because of the humor behind it.
My theory is that he actually ate the pie and was killed, but squidward hallucinated spongebob to cope with the loss making the whole show from that point all in squidward's imagination
Not only that, but through every season, the quality of the show drops because swuidward is succumbing to ptsd and lunacy

Edit: Also this sorta ties in with another one of your theories that Squidward is Spongebob's caretaker and guardian other than his parents the regret and guilt he would have felt would have been astronomical! Also the saddened faces of Spongebob's parents would have been enough to sell the deal and force him into a constant state of fear, anxiety, and depression.

I believe that the reason the pirates disguised the bombs as pies was so they could smuggle them without raising suspicion from the authorities.
I rewatched this episode and one thing that confuses me the most is that Mr Krabs took a piece from the pie, when spongebob shows the pie later it's magically complete without the missing piece. Outside of a continuity error i can't understand why.
Update, I watched a remake Nickelodeon made with puppets which made the same detail error which means this was intentional, but why?

Actually, it would probably be a bit more plausible that either the Navy or someone who fought the navy used Bomb Pies, as Mr Krabs was in the navy and it would make sense in a war setting seeing as Sabotaging food was a common tactic back during the time he was in the military, and while it does make sense that pirates would do so as well, naturally it doesn't seem nearly as quant eating a pirates food than just some random soldiers.
