After graduating from Parsons School of Design, I began my career in fashion design and freelanced both in New York City, as well as London. I designed hand knits for Elle Magazine and was the editor of the Hand Knit Page before hand knits fell out of fashion in the early 1990's and the page was discontinued. In 2008 I launched my jewelry design business, designing fine jewelry in 18 & 20 Kt Gold with gemstones that I hand select for each piece. Several awards and numerous write ups & interviews in all kinds of magazines and online zines, I rediscovered hand stitching and my life took another turn. I have been designing in some form since I sold my first felt embroidered xmas tree ornaments to a small shop in Northern California when I was 16 years old, and have never looked back. And while I've had detours along the way: had two children, worked at an advertising agency, got into acting in my early 20's, published some articles for various magazines and wrote for the Huffington Post for a few years, I have always come back to designing. It is my first love and remains so to this day.

Tell you I could never do this stitch because I did not wrap it correctly. The minute you said there would be two threads on the needle I said oh I never understood that. Thank you for the way you teach. This stitch now makes sense to me.

You are so inspiring Ariane. I have been watching you since the Spring because Anna Bates had mentioned you in one of her videos. Just the other day I realized I have some linen in my stash that I could experiment with. I quilt, knit, and cross stitch..... my grandmother had started to teach me embroidery as a child...I may just haul out that linen and her old embroidery basket that I inherited....and who knows? Hello Ariane, I’m one of those who gets totally flummoxed by this stitch and it’s not helped this time round by me feeling that your demonstration varies slightly from Sue Spargo’s directions in her ‘Creative Stitching’ book. I’m sure it’s to do with the winding of the thread around the needle at the end, can you see a difference in technique? Great fan of yours even though I’m a right handed. Thanks!
Other than the fact that in Creative Stitching the illustration shows this stitch being done using the back of the needle and I am demonstrating it using the tip, it is being done exactly the same. Take another look and perhaps try to follow along. I do see that the second time I demonstrate it at the 17:30 mark I have the thread looping above the needle and that shouldn't have been, however in the subsequent times of demonstrating, as well as the first time, it is done correctly. Let me know how it goes! ❤️

Oh good! I'm so glad it was helpful. Yes, give it a try and see what feels best. I prefer going counterclockwise with the appliqué below so that I'm stitching from the appliqué and above it. Doing it right handed was very difficult for me. My mind kept shutting down!

I think it was interesting seeing it in done in each hand; right or left! I think if I watch you do stitches in your left hand I can follow as well. I think your suggestion of trying in either hand is a good one! I like this stitch & will add it to my ‘play’ cloth this afternoon. Thanks!

No! I'll have to give that a try. Have you done that? I bet it looks amazing. I was also thinking one could add a bead in-between the pearls. That might be pretty too.

Hi Nancy I’d have to rewatch the video but typically flag the other stitches with connecting videos. I’m guessing it’s an open buttonhole filler stitch done in the round, but I made this video years ago so I can’t remember now. Go look at the open buttonhole stitch video and see if that’s it.

I think you answered my question later in the video. 3 weight Shepherds silk. Was that it?
@@susanhamilton1822 I think it's a silk perle from Stef Francis, 5 wt. But the Pearl stitch at the end that I used on my Making Waves: A Drawstring Bag is a 3 wt. Shepherd's Silk. I don't use anything less than a 5wt thread for the Pearl Stitch.

Haha! Okay, but there IS a difference in which hand you are born favoring and for those of us who are predominantly "Left-Handed", it isn't just in the direction we stitch. I'm not sure about the "discuss with husband" advice as my husband isn't left handed, so I don't go to him for advice about my lived experience, but perhaps your husband is! ❤️💕❤️
