- Edmund Gill Swain, born on the 19th of February 1861 in Stockport, Cheshire, was a respected English cleric and author known for his contributions to the ghost story genre. Educated at Manchester Grammar School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Swain pursued Natural Sciences. Ordained as a deacon in 1885 and a priest in 1886 at Rochester, he served as a curate in Camberwell before assuming the role of chaplain at King's College, Cambridge, alongside the notable scholar and author M. R. James. The two shared living quarters within the college, fostering a collegial relationship that extended beyond their professional roles. Swain's duties included teaching at the college's choir school, showcasing his multifaceted engagement in academic life.
His literary legacy reached a notable point with the 1912 publication of "The Stoneground Ghost Tales," a collection that demonstrated his skill in the supernatural and positioned him as an early imitator of James, leaving a lasting imprint on the genre.
Within the collection, "Bone to His Bone" stands out as a quietly intriguing narrative. Set on a Christmas Eve, the story follows Reverend Bachtel, seeking matches in the dark, only to encounter a mysterious book on gardening. This spectral tome, once owned by a long-departed rector, subtly guides him to a specific spot in the garden. The unfolding events, marked by an understated approach to bibliomancy, reflect Swain's ability to handle hauntings without sensationalism. "Bone to His Bone" quietly underscores Swain's finesse, blending a touch of gentle humor with the supernatural, presenting a nuanced exploration of the ghostly that avoids overstatement.

Oh Tony you are just the best! This is one of my all time favorites, especially at Christmas. I've had one of those weeks where all seemed to go awry. Now I can get under the covers with the cats , turn out the light and let the stress be washed away by your wonderful voice, Must add it was so nice to listen to and the cats really enjoy your voice as well, they came round as soon as you started.

I'm enjoying this story now, it's very calming to my nerves. I can relate to Mr Bachtel; the sleeplessness and the aversion to change, even for the better. For me, worse than elusive slumber or change, is that damned invisible furniture, though unseeable in the night, it makes its presence felt as it assaults one's toes most sadistically.
After words: "The Spots would woof at me." I love this so much, it tugged on my heartstrings.

She would roll her eyes, unable to speak. Yet laughed & smiled during each viewing. You got nothing to lose, my friend. Keep up the great work...love your channel.
I can relate a little with this story. My grandma's house was German frontline hospital during WW2.
And my parents built our house on former garden grounds. For a number of years we dug up human bones. Only limbs though...😮

I would agree this is a very non-malevolent ghost story---which therefore makes it more unique. During your ramble and you let the dogs come back and they started playing and making their horrible noises, I was laughing so hard I couldn't concentrate on anything you were saying. The news is so horrific at the moment, it's self-protective to take time away from it.
When there's something to be done - like going to a protest - I'm up for it, but being constantly reminded of the suffering of people just knocks me down, down.

The Stoneground Ghost Tales is one of my favourite collections of supernatural stories and this tale is one of the best, even though it is short. A wonderful reading, for which much thanks. I love this type of classic short story, being of course a fan of MRJ...
Another good collection is Sleep No More by L.T.C. Rolt. Not sure if it's in the public domain (it was published in 1948) but it is available for the Kindle quite cheaply. It would be great to hear some of those...🙂

Great, great story with flavors of the Master, MRJ. I too, first read this in an anthology years back. It's fantastic to hear it again. I just picked up the book, "The Stoneground Ghost Tales of E G Swain (I keep wanting to pronounce his last name Swan- his stories are beautiful... in a creepy, dark way) Compiled From The Recollections of...etc.," because of your great back story on the author. It was a bit expensive ($50) because they're rare and had to order it from the UK because even with the shipping, was still cheaper than any copy here in the States. (Shout out to Brit Books!) Just another author I get to enjoy because of The Classic Ghost Stories Podcast- Thanks a million, Tony! All the best to you and your hounds, love the accompanying background soundtrack they provide to your after-tale-chats. The snarling & growling is quite apt!

I grew up visiting Peterborough a lot for its cinema from my home in West Norfolk, its thoroughly East Anglian. Its technically inside of and mostly surrounded by Cambridgeshire, and because in the Middle Ages it was a kind of Free City and this carried over to it getting a cathedral and being its own separate county level council.
This was a fun story, really enjoyed it 💜 The puppies sound like lots of fun. I have two cocker spaniels just a bit over a year and I empathize with you 🐶🐶

I think that I understand how things are with your Mum, having been through that journey with MiL; she once got her Son, my darling, to drive 250 Kms at 11 pm, to see her because she wanted a packet of cigarettes, then insisted that he leave because she didn't want him staying in the good room.
(She went into care and lived better for 10 years longer than expected ).

Tony two quick points, as I have a nice smile on my face.
1. Goldilocks zone - I can’t stand short tales and don’t like long tales. You need to pull yourself together and create 58 minute tales ! 😅but then I’m free to knock myself out - how dare you !!

The other day I woke my mom because it was only 4pm and she doesn't like to sleep during the day. She looked at me, then looked right next to me and shouted "Who the F is that?" She swore she saw the full, 7' tall figure of a "shadow man" standing next to me. I'm a skeptic through and through but it still chilled me to the bone.😅I told her it must have been Harry -- our name for her benign tumor which presses against her pineal gland; she calls it her undeveloped twin. Moms are so much fun at this age.🤐

Btw, I just saw your post about another complainer saying that you ramble afterward. Why they don’t just move on is beyond me. You should comment back to them and offer to read them a short story for a fee with absolutely no commentary after. People forget that they receive this great entertainment for free! Yet they feel it necessary to give you their negative feedback. Something they’d never do if you were face to face. Anyway, I LOVE your content including the commentary!
