Amazing pravacan by HH Bhakti Vikasa Swami on the need to move to farms. We are starting farm communities in Seattle, WA and greater Dallas area based on his principles.

Hare Krishna. Wonderful lecture. I so wish all devotees were having this mind set so that we would be able to cooperate and open many real gurukulas for our children.

Srila Prabhupada - " the word materialist means asura, demon. " So logically speaking being a material success actually means to be a demon and a failure.

Maharaj I had a question that Prabhupada didn't want devotees to work in cities in factories and in corporates but to live in farms and be self sufficient. But what is confusing me is - if this is what Prabhupada wanted then why are all grihastas and congregation working in corporates in cities and sending their children to karmi schools? They claim that that you must go to the farm after retirement but initially you need to live in the city . So Maharaj if Prabhupada didn't want devotees to work in corporates then why are all grihastas working in corporates and living in the city?
I am 18 and am going to join college soon but if I am not going to work in corporates in a city, then why I am even going to college? But then I see devotees working in corporates so I think maybe this is what Prabhupada wanted. So Maharaj could you please clarify what did Prabhupada really want? Hare Krsna

(Managed by disciples) Srila Prabhupada wanted that the grhasthas live in self-sufficient farms and brahmcaris stay and preach in the city. Brahmacaris and Sannyasis are sheltered in the asramas while in the city, but the grhasthas have to closely associate with karmis (non-devotees) while at work, school or college in the city. This pulls down their consciousness. Rupa Gosvami instructed us in Nectar of Instruction not to associate with karmis as it will destroy bhakti. It is difficult to practice bhakti in the cities because it is a rajasik life and cities are full of vice, degradation etc. Also karmis are in control so we cannot do much to change the environment. The countryside or living in nature is sattvik and there the whole spectrum of Vedic culture and Varnasrama can be implemented. The devotees can live on their terms.
In cities when someone is working or studying, just to finish 16 rounds is very difficult. But then we also have to read 2 hours, here classes, follow the whole morning program and evening program. How can we do that when we have to work so many hours a day in the city? Plus the whole work environment or study environment is not devotional at all. In the farms/countryside one can groa their own food and always be with devotees throughout the day in a devotional mood. Srila Prabhupada said that out of 24 hrs, 8 hours should go for personal maintanance like sleep, eating, bathing etc, 8hrs for work or occupation and 8 hrs for bhatki. How can we do that in the city when we have to struggle so hard? But its possible in the farms where we need only work 6 months in a year.
To answer your question, of why devotees are not going to settle in the farms. There are many reason (i) Uncertainty of how they will be able to cope and what will happen if they can't live there (ii) They did not properly understand or realize the mission of Srila Prabhupada (iii) They are reluctant to give up city life as sense gratification is readily available.
However its leaders and preachers should begin now to educate and urge those under them to go there. It may not be easy or practical for everyone to go all at once, it requires good planning and preparation. It is highly recommended that young men spend few years in the brahmacari asram to train in sense control and Krishna consciousness before starting their life and if they can remain there then they have a high chance of achieving perfection in life. Most will go on in grhastha life and they should seriously consider joining a self-sufficient farm community (or starting one), by taking good guidance.
The last part of your question, Srila Prabhupada wanted to create a revolution against this materialistic civilization and to replace it with Vedic culture. So we should all stop the materialistic slaughterhouse education and begin gurukula education as well as Vedic culture. Its difficult to advise you personally what to do that can be done on a personal level of discussion after hearing your exact situation. Contact me, Murari Das; muraridas.bvks@gmail.com.
