    What a great talk, delving into psychology and neuroscience. I studied psychology for several years and now put more trust in Buddhism and mindfulness then any school of psychology or brain science. It's ironic how many scientists extol a scientific method and then worship "God" or gods and godesses and even reject evolution. Now scientists tell us being mindful (are we not to look both ways before crossing a street?) may interfere with letting the mind be free. There was a psychologist who studied human conversations by eavesdropping. He found that 70% of human dialogue is gossip. Free mind, free tongue? Right Mind, Right Speech? How many diets and therapies have there been in the past 20 years? Hundreds, if not thousands. I played music for a church which preached the Genesis Diet, so church-goers could live to be 300 years old, like in the Old Testament. The heads of psychology departments at some universities can dictate the content and school of psychology that the staff and students must adhere to. It's not all about science, it can become like a cult. But honestly, some Buddhist monasteries can also be cult-like; perhaps that's where mindfulness can be of help..

    Pháp Linh thank you for this mindful talk and for testifying to the necessity of the Sangha. I think the teachings require some discernment. Reverence is fine. Circumspection is also fine. You recognised the main barrier: notions. Not to be swept away by the notion of the past, future or present was the Buddha's teaching in this sutra. Therefore by extension, not to be swept away by the notions in the teachings. We try to look beyond those whispered words and accept them as signposts. Then maybe we will see without seeing. It is possible to be alone in this emptiness when all notions of this kind have been checked and put to rest. Perhaps then the Sangha can become as one. A truly great teaching.

    Why dwell with pain? I say no to that. If it doesn't feel good, I don't want anything to do with it. Suffering is not the move. Remove all pain and all people who provoke malicious pain. Choose a better feeling thought.

    • @jSpirituS7
      @jSpirituS7 Před rokem

      Pain is our biggest teacher and is the twin to pleasure. We cannot enter the doorway to happiness without first opening the door of pain. Pain is unavoidable. But pain doesn't have to eliminate happiness completely. How could one ever experience joy without experiencing pain first, since they are the opposite, they depend on one another to take care of each other.
      The trick is knowing the better way to transform pain and to not allow it to continue when unnecessary.
      Running away from pain will only prolong the feedback and reciprocation of that pain.
      But embracing the pain will allow us to calm it and weaken it and slowly we can learn to avoid painful feelings and situations if we cultivate compassion through mindful awareness
      I hope this helps dear friend
      🙏
      I too suffer with much pain 💔

    Is he saying to be skeptical about the teachings of the Buddha? That’s what he said. That maybe what was written a long time ago by the Buddha should not be taken literally. He’s confusing me.

    • @phaplinh2101
      @phaplinh2101 Před 4 lety +9

      Hello, I think the Buddha himself wanted us to approach his teachings with an open mind and a certain degree of skepticism. He recommended for his students not to believe things just because they are said by someone in a position of authority, or because they are written in holy scriptures, but rather to test by one’s own experience whether or not the teachings are helpful in reducing suffering - this is the one true test. You can find this teaching in the Kalama Sutra. It is also important to point out that the sutras as we know them were recorded in written form several hundred years after the Buddha’s lifetime, so whilst the monks who memorised and passed down the teachings seem to have done an excellent job, it’s not unreasonable to suppose that some mistakes were gradually introduced, over the years.For that reason too, we should approach the sutras with openness and curiosity, not blind faith. Of course, too much doubt is also unhelpful, but our faith should be based primarily on our own experience of applying the practice - on that basis we can take another step.

    • @Amelie447
      @Amelie447 Před 4 lety +1

      He says maybe some things have not been translated exactly. The first written form of Buddha's Dharma was in the time of King Asoka; * 304 BC in North India; † 232 BC - that is about 250 years after Buddhas live. Verbal texts can be transmitted differently than the Buddha said.

    Is his name phap linh ? Vietnamese name ?

    • @upstatenewyork
      @upstatenewyork Před 3 lety

      That’s the name he took when he became a monk but it is not his birth name. He is not Vietnamese but the name he took as a monk is. They all have to have Vietnamese names when they name part of Plum village which I think is strange. They should be allowed to use their birth name as far as I am concerned. He looks as Vietnamese as I do.

      I think they have a choice to choose a nickname they want either in English or Vietnamese or it is given by Thay Thich Nhat Hanh....there is a sister in plum village her name is True dedication...That is English, I think whatever the name is as long as a it has a positive meaning.

    • @qiandaliu4029
      @qiandaliu4029 Před 2 lety

      I feel Vietnamese is influenced a lot from Chinese language, the word "Linh" has many meanings, for example: (灵活 flexible), (灵魂 soul/spirit), (羚羊 antelope), (零 zero). I think Thay Thich Nhat Hanh is also very fluent in Chinese, he names his students in Vietnamese surely for his own reasons.

    • @nguoithichhoasim1233
      @nguoithichhoasim1233 Před rokem

      According to Buddhist tradition , when a person ( lay Buddhist or bikkshu / bikkhsuni ) who take refuge in 3 Jewels via a ceremony , the monk who represents the renunciant sangha will read the precepts will give his/ her a Buddhist name . The Buddhist name has the good meaning , usually relating to the dharma , and consists a word that shows he/she share the same teacher ( like surname ) , so there are Pháp Linh , Pháp Bảo ..ect. . Because Thầy is a Vietnamese , so his disciples have the Vietnamese name.

    • @nguoithichhoasim1233
