I, TOO, LOVE HER VERY, VERY MUCH!... UNFORTUNATELY I NEVER SAW / LISTEN HER "LIVE" BUT, EVERYTIME I SEE AND LISTEN A VIDEO OF HER, OR I LISTEN A CD, I ALSO "ADORE" HER... SHE WAS AN ASTONISHING OPERA SINGER, AN BREATHTAKING ACTRESS AND SHE MUST HAVE A VERY COMPLEX AND FASCINATING PERSONALITY... SHE WAS, IS AND WILL BE IRREPLACEABLE!...
Hello! How are you? I Thank you for your kindness!... BOTH OF US "LOVE SO MUCH MADAME CALLAS" as I understand. UNFORGETABLE!!... Bye-Bye and STAY WELL, OK?!...
Fascinating piece of opera history. For those of us far too young to have heard her perform live, it is great to have these clips to get an idea of her voice and her persona and the effect they had on the audiences. If I could turn back time, it would lovely to hear even just one of her great performances. Sad to think that she was only in her mid fifties when she died, an auto-immune disease had weakened her heart.
Really it was the corticosteroids she was on to counteract the soft tissue disease that weakened her heart not the actual disease. She was on them from the mid 50’s until she died.
@@LaDivinaLover Also lots and lots of narcotics that nowadays are not being used anymore because are too dangerous. We could say it was an unfortunate mix :/
Maria has gone but her reputation is now legend and will live on as long as there is civilization. Opera on the other hand, just as she predicted, is now virtually dead, certainly Italian opera. Recent recordings from the once greatest house in the World, La Scala, Milan are a testament to the appalling standards now accepted by a totally ignorant audience.
I've read a number of books on Maia Callas and it's the first time that hear that she had a predisposed condition and that she was being treated for it. Always good to learn new material on this wonderful artist. There are people like this who have a great influence on your life. Maria, lady Diana and Elvis all share this sensitive nature that makes them all unique. They gave so much to humanity for this reason there presence is still felt today. God bless. Be safe
If I remember correctly my parents were present and I believe she was unfortunately unable to continue after beginning of act 2 ( she was said to be almost in a comatose state) . Correct me if my souvenirs are wrong - I was still a young teen at the tiime . Thanks
Indeed and I am no longer surprisd when people tell me that this failed Norma was the most moving one from her incredibly range of performing this so difficult role .
This was probably a pirated recording done with the technology of the day. Her voice has plenty of power left. Her technique failed her from time to time during this period, but this night she was on.

Indeed Callas last Norma and the "entrance" is true to the legend but unfortunatelly her voice is hardly audible . Very sad ...

And this sounds like a very back of the house seat. Lol
