  • A very brief look at my latest Laserdisc player, a Pioneer CLD-R7G.
    I should of course be saying CLD-R7G in the video not CLD-7RG!

    Love the styling on that model - and a lot of the later Japanese Pioneers. Without the usual all-black motif, you can actually see the buttons and features of the player!

      Hi Sam, me too. I got it to replace my LD-S9 which after many years of faithful service finally died. Watched my first full length movie on it tonight, the classic (as far as i am concerned!), The Sop Around The Corner. Running through my VP50 into my now very old NEC 50" Plasma display. The picture was as good as the LD-S9, which is to say superb. Also the the side change is the fastest i've seen on any player.

      I’m thinking about purchasing a Pioneer Rg5. As I am new to laserdisc’s, these Japanese versions play American disc as well right ?

    I have an R7G and I didn't need to step down the voltage here in the US. I was using the voltage converter when I first got it about 5 years ago then I read that you didn't need it for this player. I tried it and sure enough it works with US voltage. My biggest dilemma is that I need to clean the player inside and out because it had gotten stored in a very moldy environment and I'm allergic to mold. Unmentioned is the black ext feature that helped me with viewing lds on lcd tvs. I've since switched to a Pioneer Elite CRT 64 inch RPT and this is where its at as far the best ld picture you can get from my experience. I've tried every type of tv and hook up believe me. I like my r7G but I have to wonder if the innards are that of a 604 with the 3d filter added on. It does put out a nice image. If only i could effectively clean it to see what it does on my RPT. Good luck. Nice set up you've got.

      Hi, thanks for your comment. Your mains voltage in the US is much closer to Japans than ours is so i'm not too surprised that you don't need the step down. Yes i should have mentioned the CLD-R7G's ability to boost black levels which helps to give better contrast. All in all though i think it's a superb player.

      Japanese electronics will WORK in the US with no step-down, but I've heard it's bad for them in the long term. I have my VHD player plugged into one for that reason. Thinking of getting one of these players, it'd be a bit of a pain to have to use one with that since I play far more laserdiscs than VHDs, but seems some Pioneer equipment "knows" what it's plugged into. Anyone know for sure? Also wondering how this model handles rot on older discs, especially noise in the picture and audio? Later players didn't always handle analog audio the best.

      The R7G is far more than just a 604 with a 3d comb filter. Its electronics are significantly upgraded, and apparently in testing it bests the DVL-91, CLD-D604, CLD-99 and comes close to the S9/X9! probably the best bang for the buck LD player you can currently get. forums.tomsguide.com/threads/testing-cld-99-vs-dvl-91-vs-japanese-cld-r7g.248680/

    Hello, which button on the remote controls the picture settings, like the sharpness, for example? Thank you

    • @RetroSteamTech
      @RetroSteamTech  Před 10 měsíci

      Hi. The second button in from the right at the top of the remote labelled "V-DNR 3D SELECT" which allows you to alter YNR (luma), CNR (chroma), 3D Y/C (comb filter) and sharpness.

      @@RetroSteamTech Thank you very much for the reply. Is there another way to access those settings? Also, in that setting, which buttons increase and decrease the values?

      @RetroSteamTech  Před 10 měsíci

      @@gmayle425 I don't think there is another way to access the settings. If you Google "Pioneer CLD R7G Settings" the first link should be to a post on the LaserDisc Database. This post explains how to adjust the settings using the shuttle wheel and jog.

    Does this player have Picture Stop Cancel, so that it will play through CAV discs that are coded to automatically pause at certain points? Ones that have it activate it by holding down the Play button until "PSC Cancel" appears onscreen. I sort of want a player that can decode graphics, but don't want to give up picture stop cancel which my main players have. Also, can this display graphics on CD+Graphics discs?

    • @RetroSteamTech
      @RetroSteamTech  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi, yes this player does have PSC. Also according to what i have manged to discover on the Internet it can display CD Graphics.

    What do you recommend is a good price for this? I have seen these on ebay for as high as 800 but someone said they paid 250.

      I'd be very surprised if you could find one for 250, 700 to 800 is the usual sort of price.
