- A Britsh boat in a woodsy Maine (USA) setting.... what a great find with this triple-keel 1969 Colvic Sea Rover 28' (8.5m) sloop sailboat for sale!! It's got quite a bit of boat packed into a smaller footprint.... but that doesn't mean you can't bring the whole family as it's got good accommodations and is bluewater-capable having sailed over from the UK and down to the Caribbean.... Oh, and if you want to head for the beach.... just drive it right up there!!

Hi Everyone! I am the owner of this boat "Departure" and she is a great vessel. We thought she had sold when a perspective buyer sent a sizable nonrefundable deposit. The buyer backed out as he could not put the rest of the money together So- this boat is still for sale and ready for new owners!!! Contact me (Scott )my phone number is in the notes below the video.
This has become my favorite youtube channel. Randy please keep pumping until you get every last drop of knowledge out of the captain!
The Sea Rovers were a great family boat and along with Westerlies, MacWesters and others set a trend in the UK which lasted to the mid 80s. Often home completions they can show a wide range of finish but they are very solid plodders and great beaching boats. Our family of 4 are happily learning to sail around our Channel island Home in our MacWester Rowan Crown only 24 foot yet 7800lbs, which is a direct descendant of this boat. We love your show, great knowledge and love for boats of all types and vintages. Thank you!
I bought a Macwester 27 project some time ago that I am looking forward to getting finished once lockdown allows. I am thinking of selling it though as time has shown headroom is an issue for me. After seeing this video I am regretting not getting the rover that was available for similar money at the time, while it is a little more dated it does have the headroom.
@@ogginit8492 we have a Macwester Rowan Crown so have every sympathy, but apart from headroom they are such solid simple sailing boats. Great way to get a family on the water. Good luck with her.
Its dangerous watching y'alls videos, keep showing such affordable ready to sail boats I might just bite.
Captain Q,
Are you ever planning on expanding your "Hither and Yon" traveling by hithering and slithering down the East coast and other areas. How about Captain Q and Ran-Day do the "Great Loop". This boat would be great with the ease of lowering this mast.
P.S. I can speak for every viewer by saying you guys make our day.
As soon as we all get vaccine shots we are taking off
So excited to shed the extra layers of clothing and absorb a little vitamin D
I hope you're vaccinated by now, though I imagine Delta might have complicated things a little bit. I hope that once things settle down a little and it's safe, we will get to see you visiting sailboats hither and yon all over North America and maybe even beyond. 😄
Hello from west Wales here in the UK. Just want to say a massive thanks to you guys for another great vid, and thank you so much for mentioning New Kipper Tales. It was very interesting to hear that the Colvic Sea Rover 28 has crossed the pond, I always felt she was tough enough but could never confirm it, so I'm delight to see that lovely lady had sailed from the UK. We have been the custodians of Kipper for getting on for 4 years now,. I don't know if we every truly own a boat, we come and go but boats seem have many lives. We had all kinds of plans but work and then a pandemic have delayed things but we will get there : Kipper to has a lot history and is very well travelled indeed. The former owners lived on her for 16 years and travelled from the UK to the Mediterranean no less than 6 times though the canals of Europe. They spent years at a time cruising the Mediterranean, from Portugal to Malta almost everywhere between clocking up some 12000 miles. What a legacy she has and so far in our adventures we have hardly scratched the surface of what she done before or what is possible for her. We originally started making our vlogs so we could shear our adventures with the former owners who still love her so much, but we are delight that others have joined us and enjoyed the journey. Thanks again guys, and massive thanks to everyone that has visited our channel since your recommendation, 'fair winds and a following sea', we will be follow you vids with keen interest.
Thank you Kipper folk. I spotted your channel and your devotion to your boat and the sea. And something about it reminded me of one of my favor characters from “The Trustee From the Toolroom”. I’m sure you have read it.
I’m so glad our Captain Q crew livened up your day
Captain Q
What a fun little boat that would be to gunkhole in. Perfect for the bahamas.
Always feels like a gift when I come home from work and there is another boat to look at from the two of you! Thanks for making my coming home from work so nice! I would love this boat. Heavy and hardy!
that's a lovely sentiment. thank you
Love the show been watching for awhile really nice seeing my buddy’s boat .
The Wildlings, complete novices, took one one of these from wales via the isles of scilly to france. they tootled up the river seine to Paris, then hung a right and tootled on down the length of france on the canals. They recently sold the boat in Monaco no less and are currently boatless. I recommended your channel to them and i know he was very taken with the freedom 35 you showed us. I too have a fifty year old boat and burned out the armature of a bosch drill trying to install an exaust skin fitting. Back in the day,we didnt know just how strong fibreglass was so boats of that era are over built.
Great stories of other sea going bulldogs
I think they are fixing up a catamaran right now.
@@carlwegener7544 The Wildlings got the catamaran underway just a couple of weeks ago.
My favorite boat channel! Love yall! Just trying to help out your youtube algorithms. Cant imagine youtube without Captain Q
Maybe one day!
I like this little boat and not ashamed to say it. There was a time in my life when this would have been perfect for me and I know it will be perfect for someone out there. I give it all the thumbs up for design, style, durability and simple utility and condition for age.
Right on
50 year old boat for a seventy five year old sailor. Sounds about right. Thank you for finding her and showing her.
glad you enjoyed it
Typing again.... And so just to let you know. I've been trying not to make any comments at all. Just appreciate "on my own" what you guys are doing. I mean hey? What do I know? So my thought was that I would never have seen this boat. I would never have experienced that windlass and all the other (unique) parts if you guys weren't there to provide a "tour." ~~~ I experience this boat as a real "sweetie" I'll tell ya. So thanks so much again. Just great! ✨🌸⛵🌸✨
Hahaha excellent Steven… it’s a bit of a drive from Epsom circle so we’ll do the climbing around for you! 😉
My favorite bubbly and the cpt’s favorite stew. My life is complete.
So glad we can be of help :-)
Although short bilge plates on long keelers were common on classic sailing boats to stop them falling over, Westerly really developed the use of twin or triple keels. One of their advantages is in good righting moments. Whereas Westerly tank develop hydrodynamical designed keels, splayed out & toed in, Colvic compromised a little in order to make theirs easier to get out of the moulds, hence they are virtually perpendicular. I'd guess is was more of a motor sailer.
It's also said they tend to tip over on big waves less then a deep, long keel or fin because the can slide down them more, e.g. the Golden Hinds & their derivatives, an earlier British classic, has made many global voyages despite having a shallow draft and modest balance.
Keel has the lines of an old Hillyard.
What s great find ! 3 keels....I figured it was a "Bond Boat " when ya got her up on the step hydra foils take over to make a fast get away . Yet another enlightening show mates ... Great work ! 🏆⛵⛵🌀🌬🌬
That CD in the lazarette has a real purpose! Some folks will dangle them up the mast to help reflect and present a more visible radar image for other boats and especially those big blindly-lumbering ships. In fact, there are many DIY designs out there in Internetland to easily cut and glue a couple of CDs together to present a fuller reflective profile no matter the orientation. Frankly, I'd be astonished NOT to find several old AOL CDs in any older sailboat up there in foggy Maine. I'm led to understand that those silver mylar emergency blankets can also serve a similar radar-reflective purpose when draped aloft. There's apparently some debate as to the efficacy of such radar reflector hacks, but I'm in no position technically to judge.
I love the Captain demonstrating the galley, perfect fit, perfect boat. good show gents,.
That boat would kick ass here in Tampa Bay. Lots of tide and lots of shallows.
Sail it down from Maine! Would be a great adventure!
@@scottfuller2160 Yes it would. I'm not quite set for a project boat right now, but that would be a lot of fun gimping it back to Tampa.
Great video! Thanks Captain Q!
For someone who had the time and the elbow grease it looks like a really, really neat boat. It reminds of of when I was having some engine work done on my motorcycle. I told the mechanic I wanted a truck engine not a hot rod. This kind of reminds me of a truck kind of boat not a hot rod boat. Keep the good stuff coming Capt'n.
Great enjoyable video. Thanks for the happy feelings
Really enjoy learning about the history of these older sailing vessels you find. Keep up the great videos.
Glad you like them! its fun going down memory lane as well as doing research on the side thank you for watching
I want one of these. Love the tuff durable boats. Stopin anywhere to fish would be amazing.
Those are awesome. I took a photo of in NZ where the tides are also big. I had to chuckle at an anchored boat with no water under it.
Looks like a nice sturdy boat that would be lots of fun to sail ⛵️⛵️⛵️ thanks Captain Q and Ran-day for another fun video 🥰
Glad you enjoyed it
Captain Q, I love this channel. You have answered so many questions for me. Thank you for doing this.
Glad you enjoy it!
Great boat. When I was around 19 years old I sailed with a friend on his family boat same size and we beached the boat every evening along the Cornish coast in the early seventies. Thank you guys for the great video
sounds like some amazing memories
Catalinas are rare this side of the pond, but Sea Rovers, Westerlies etc are the equivalent in the UK and there are lots of them. As the Captain noted, they are deceptively bigger than people think from the outside. The full keel and bilge keels are like belt and braces (you'd say suspenders!) for a boat this size and most have have a full keel or a par of bilge keels.
A lovely video again!
Catalina's were called jaguar's over here. Look up jaguar 27 they were a very popular boat👍
@@iainbaker2742 **smacks forehead** D'oh!
Lovely little treasure.
Not cute but very British ! Basic bathroom (ok head) ...
Very good to see the headroom.
And Blue Water capable too !
Wish I could pay attention right now, CoViD
has hit hard (eldest in hospital) and rest in isolation. Good news is that all seem to be on the mend. I hope full recovery is only a matter of time.
we wish for you all to be well soon and gets this thing behind you and us
I wonder how much Dinty Moore I'm gonna eat whilst sailing this summer thanks to Capt Q...
One can. Then you’ll understand Cap Q is not infallible.
PUUUUHHHHLEEEEEESSSE
Great review as always! Thanks for not forgetting the engine this time! 😀
At least I would be evenly grounded in Barnegat Bay NJ.
We corresponded once before. I'm coming from a aviation background.
It was a big pill for me to swallow, slowing down to 5 knots. But i really like these hulls with the shoe.
I live in Alaska and the things that i see me doing; resting on ground while i can get off the boat to beachcomb, explore timber camps, mining camps, fox farms, hunting and gathering.
I am thinking a boat in the 28 - 34 foot range for me and maybe my dog.
I wish it sailed faster, if it sailed any slower i would be underway at anchor.
We sailed and lived aboard one for 2 years, it was a great introduction to sailing, incredibly safe and solid. However, very slow, and terribly rolly at anchor. Despite making their way to the states I would question their bluewater credibilities but it could be in the right hands, love the channel, Cap!
Excellent feedback... wish we would have known about your channel so we could have shared your experience with the Covic. Looking forward to watching your episodes. thanks
Nice one! Drying out on the Dutch mudflats is a life changing experience. I so regret not being able to do that with my current boat.
must be cool to watch the tide roll out and still be sitting tall
Ah the S/V Melody (minnie me), a 38ft Steel Pilothouse Cutter. Great catch & share of what's out thier! 👍
Rock on!
Another great videos! Love your positive attitudes!
Thanks so much!
Finally an explanation for my innate ability to sleep on my boat, Captain Newton’s first law of physics - a captain at rest stays at rest. All these years I have been battling physics. No wonder I could not overcome the lengthy nap or sleeping in.
Love the channel!
Ok I’ll give this 3 more points. If you are a young family on a starter budget this boat is safe and has a reliable engine. The twin keels will be popped by the yacht snobs but beaching this baby would be fun. It comes with its trailer and you can raise the mast by friends. No crane bill. The fun factor per dollar is high. Cheers
I love this lil boat !
Loved it!
what a great boat! I would love to learn how to sail on this one.
Love the show guys !!!
Love your video 😁
Strange coincidence indeed 🤔😂 I've always been fond of these types of boats with these stable keels ❤️
Dinty Moore 🤣 still gets me every time
Geat Little Ship , lot of ship there for not much money for some one , certainlly brings back memorys of the olden days when things were simpler , Ive still got my Bosens Whistle Some how that stayed with me LOL
Every boat fits into a scenario that I construct in my mind. This channel is an escape from reality for me. I just wish we’d go places.
So glad we can fill a few hours of your days with our work
Wow that's a sweet boat!! I'd love to have that to start out!! Beautiful ✌🏻💗😊❣️
You should!
I would absolutely invest in this boat as a day sailer. For my personal ocean crossing preferences, I wouls definitely need an aft cabin. Would love to see yall tour a few Vagabonds
Great stuff boy's oh and you as well sea dog
Arf arf
She's a sweet little boat! After catching up with the Wildlings, she's pretty tempting.
feel free to give...im sure the owner will help the process before and after the sale...just guessing
Many of the same fittings as my 1969 MacWester 28. Mine is resident in Canada but almost certain she was shipped over, didn’t sail. She has done the Bahamas run though. Solid boats from a great era in British boat building.
Love your podcast about these used sail boats. Would love to include sailing in my current activities. Although just living on a live aboard looks very inviting. Ah to dream.
Glad you like them!
Love this boat.
Super cool boat. Very tempting!
We agree!
Great video Captain Q, as usual.
🙌👏👏👏👏
OK ARE THOSE MONKEYS? LOL
Capt Q has inspired me to get back into sailing, Took a look at a Catalina 30 and a Pearson 303 this past weekend. Nice to walk up to a boat and know what to look for! Thanks, CAPT!
Fantastic! Let us know how your hunt goes!
@@YachtHunters I definitely will.
You have shown me so many boats that I would like to own. 👀🤔👍🤠⛵
You are quickly becoming the highlight of my week captain. Love the Jimmy Durante reference. Again another lovely lady of yesteryear in need of a second life. Her "finest hour" is yet to come I hope. There should be an age warning as attractive as it may be I feel an old sod like myself would be exhausted single handling her. In my younger years though I had a love of tradition and restoring projects. Nice find sir and "Good evening Mr and Mrs America and all the ships at sea".
Was that Edward morrow speaking
I had a cup of tea and a butter pie 🎶
Captain! Captain!
Aloha 🤙
Perfect!
Hey I recognize that time lapse of the tides.. Halls Harbour in Nova Scotia :)
I like and enjoy the weekly episodes. I showed my wife and she like the video I shared with her. I am in mid coast Maine and have been looking for a good quality Pearson Ensign. I owned on in my 20s. Several years hell, decades have passed, and I have been looking for over 6 months in my price range. I finally found one in NJ. I few down and purchased the boat. When I got home last night from the Airport my wife had a congratulations gift bag. The bag contained a can of, you guessed it, Dingy Moore Stew!!!! Thanks and keep up the videos
I love your wife !! She is one of a kind You’re a fortunate man. And bon voyage with your new Ensign. (You could use a sea swing on board for the dingy)
👍
You got me with the Dinty. I did not expect it? Nice boat.
:-)
Sweet little boat! With a bit of work inside she'd be perfect for a teenager for her/his/their first boat.
Nice boat and guide as usual Capt. Q. If the Dinty Moore people aren't paying you, they should be!
If they dont advertise on this channel it's a opportunity MISSED !
Very cool!
Poland! Just up the road (Norway, ME).
Excellent starter boat for somebody or a single handler that wants to circumnavigate the globe
Quality viewing captain ...
Captain Q, You must have a monetary interest in Dinty Moore Stew. Ha! I like it to. He used to live just across the pasture from my uncle and aunt. When he still ran the company, the stew was far better, with more vegetables and beef.
Sounds like the beef was in the pasture ?
Thanks for the history
No connection to DM Just enjoy it at the right time Like egg nog at Christmas or champagne at New Year’s Eve….. DM offshore on a cool evening is the best
I Love The Captains boat selections. Thanks for such an interesting series. Dinty Moore should really sponsor The Captain and Crew.
That would be cool!
The first boat I ever sailed was called a Vivacity. It was my dad's first boat. If you've seen the video on YT of a small sailboat with A giant elephant seal on the foredeck that's a Vivacity. Twin keel made it possible to run it up on the sand at high tide in south San Diego bay wait for tide to go out and clean the bottom. Solid boat but not particularly suited for light air of southern California.
been looking for a bilge keel , thank
Interesting concept this boat
Great for family exploring … and proven as such!
It was a Bosun's whistle.
My father often used his B whistle to announce a house cleaning party or GI party as he called it.
My mother used a bosun's whistle to call us kids home for dinner.
Antique shopping on a boat. I've seen more unknown items to me than all the other videos combined. Thanks Capt Q and Randay.
Outboard bracket on the stern for extra speed? Water skiers? Save on the Yanmar wear? Westerly had the twin keel too.
Our local tides do 22 ft in the English Channel. But in some places up to 42 ft Bristol Channel. Colvin was a maker of tough boats, sadly no more. The only downside to the triple keel is that it is not very good to weather.
That's Darn Cute!
This is the prefect boat for a couple if I had the money it’d be mine
What a cutie pie (...the boat...okay you too ) 😊 Went to check out Kipper as you suggested. Nifty! Thanks for these rare finds! Cheers!
wellllll are you just going to kiss it or take it to the dance :-)
@@YachtHunters Hahaha! No, we are looking for a sailboat but gotta sell the house first. We're coming back to New England early summer. We'll meet ya at Chanucey Creek Lobster Pier for Lobstah!
@@BeauandPetey amazing spot... right until the sun goes down and those (hummingbird-sized) mosquitos come out
@@YachtHunters Yes...indeed. But, midday, when the sun is shining and BYOB wine and lobstah! Doesn't get any better!!
I like it.
I love the Captain Newtons first Law.... priceless
:-)
Me likey. Great find. Interesting little boat. Even more interesting is it’s proven blue water. Definitely gonna checkout kipper tales. Really want to see this thing under sail.
Question, price include the old trailer too?
The trailer is extra, asking $6K for the backhoe pro two axel eight tire trailer.
I think only a few places in the UK with very large tidal range, like the Severn Estuary... but a cheap mooring if your boat can dry out in an estuary. However, perfect for your summer holidays from the UK to Northern France, the Channel Islands and places like St Marlo - up to 40 foot range, and also the French Canal system. Must have been a story as to how that Colvic yacht ended up in the USA.. I thought Colvic's only sold hull and decks ? - back in the days when DIY was more fashionable and people did not have do much money...
Hi. I'm from England. I know the boat type, in fact it was the same boat as wildings sailing first bought for cruising, so there's lots of video on CZcams. I think it was about £ 5.5k. Great little coastal sailing yacht and built like a tank.
It is a little tank!! But a cute one with some great features too.... We were late to discover Wildings channel so it was fun to see the boat in action after we posted the episode. cheers!
O, Captain, My Captain! A couple of weeks ago, I flippantly quipped the next boat will probably be perfect. Well. This one is perfect for me! I love bilge keels, I love british boats (Westerlies are my faves), I prefer tillers to wheels, and a simple little boat (that can cross the Atlantic) is just perfect. Now, to convince my wife.... :-)
I'm the owner Let's Talk! My phone number is after the video description. Please feel free to call or text!
Have fun! call the owner he will help with the wife convincing or his wife will too.
It’s a tripod! Cool.
Another great video. Would love to hear you talk about catamarans as a comparison. Nice designs but so expensive. Thank you
Catamarans are on our list... we just don't find too many of them in our neck of the woods at the moment.... hopefully soon
Watching 100 plus of Ur video's I see that thier all gems. Some look like cleaned up abandoned boats.
Why not tell it like it is instead of making infomercials.
Hey Captain Q, I loved the added sailing footage on this one! Are you planning on taking us sailing in one of your future videos?
For sure
My boyfriend just bought a sailboat and they both live on Cape Cod My question is maybe off topic. What camera is used for you videos. They are always crystal clear and beautiful colors. We will be taking many photos and videos this summer and yours are marvelous. Thank you for this informative video.
i love it
These videos have inspired me to keep Dinty Moore on hand at all times ⛵
you are now well-prepared!
Plenty more nice boats over here in England for you to review if you fancy an overseas viewing trip! This one kind of reminded me of first yacht I sailed in, a Rival 34' which although longer still had the feeling of everything being shoehorned into it
We would fancy that in a London minute. Save for the covid. Time will tell. 🤞
Nice boatswains whistle
Brilliant! More British/European boats please Captain!
Thank you
