Mark reacts to Joost's "Europapa". Also don't forget to check out the podcast - windmachinepodcast.com/ And 'Eurovision News Update' right here on this channel!
Papa is the Dutch word for dad. The short version is "pa". Incidentally, he not only lost his father (I believe he was 12 at the time) to cancer but also his mother a year later due to cardiac arrest. That's why the end titles say "to: my parents". The video is very reminiscent of the 90s in the Netherlands and there are many references to Dutch artists and music styles from that era. I suppose you have to be Dutch to get them. You're right about the "oo" being pronounced as the "oa" in toast but the "J" at the start of his name is pronounced as the "Y" in Yennefer also 🙂
Joost is a Genius and this song Brilliant. Iam not into Eurovision and it took some weeks to understand Joost. Then yesterday this song gots its premiere. Beyond my big expectations. A simple heartwarming WOW.. Joost is outside the box, sets a new "frame"; and he does that in excellence with big love for music!!
The last part of the song translated: "At the end of the day, we're all human beings. My father told me, it's a world without borders. I miss you every day, is what I secretly whisper. You see dad, I listened to you." The lyrics are filled with references of love to Europe, travelling, but also feeling alone all the time. The people are (indeed) S10, and other dutch artists (Rene Froger, Donnie) and Emma Wortelboer (we gave points during Eurovision 2019 on behalf of the Netherlands). The more bass heavy section is a reference to (happy) hardcore, a genre of music invented in the Netherlands that was popular during the '90's and it features Paul Estak in a car (famous Dutch hardcore DJ). I think Joost made a nice mix of Euro centered song with a lot of Dutch influences and a personal story, all captured in a very catchy song. I do wonder if this the public will understand the deeper meanings of the song however, it being mostly in Dutch.
Not a fan of Eurovision here, i have to honost. Nor did i know/ have i heard of Joost before this. But when the song came out, and i heard it for the 1st time, things changed. Im SO looking forward to Eurovision '24 now :). The man is a genius, representing our country like this, its insane. 100% Dutch happy hardcore at the Eurovision, who knew.... Top3 for sure. Jury wont like it, but the people will. And Europe is about the people. Lets all party till we drop. Letsgoooo Joost!
Growing up in The Netherlands in the '90, HAPPY HARDCORE 4 LIFE!! Best time of my life!! Wish we could go back to those HAPPY sounding vibes!! So cool to see typical happy hardcore sounds and type of filming!! Also papa means dad in Dutch so Euro papa - Euro dad
The story is about his father’s that past away when he was 12 and a year later his mom and it’s about the advice his father gave him and to make him proud and that he misses them
In the lyrics you can hear him searching for his father throughout Europe, for his dad taught him humans put op boundaries but there are no boundaries, but he can't find his dad, he wants help but no one helps him. He refferes to Stromea's song Papaoutuai whichs means Dad where are you? The vid is a letter to his dad and he hopes it ends the pain of the grieving he still feels. When they died his home figurlarly burned down. After he lost his parents his brother raised him.
You saw s10 real fast, but everybody in this video is famous. Did you see: DJ-Paul Elstak, 2unlimited, Donny, René Froger, and all others ? This song is a tribute : Not only to his Dad, but Dutch Music in general.
Well… this is ‘the’ list of FD (famous Dutchies) in the video: Raaf, Jean Claude, S10, Donnie, René Froger, Emma Wortelboer, Charlyn Lee, Darcy Book, Lydia Oei, Jady Satoer, Teun, Yung Petsi, Appie Mussa, Martijn van Eijzeren, Gover Meit, Leipe Dennis, Bram, Paul Elstak and Gabbers. According to Google. I just know two of them 😂
12 points to The Netherlands. The winner of the Eurovision Songcontest 2024. This is a masterpiece. Euro papa= Euro dad, because papa is dad in Dutch. A sad song with lyrics with a meaning, with a message, in a happy hardcore melody. A letter to his father who died when he was a 12 year old child. His mother past away a year later. He promised his father that he will be someday on the Eurovision Songcontest stage. His father told him that it is possible because there are no borders between the countries, and no limits to follow his dream. Borders and limitations are made by human. In every country he went, he felt the pain and grief of no having his parents. The fire symbolise letting go of the grief and pain, and the start of a new chapter in his live.
Little bit of background on Joost. He was creative from a very young age and also a bit different. His father said that there are no boundaries and he should follow his dreams. They always watched the Eurovision Songfestival together so as a kid he replied that his dream would be to go to the Eurovision Songfestival. Then his dad passed away when he was 12 and his mother when he was 13. For inspiration and acceptance of the loss of his parents he travelled trough Europe. Therefore he sings that the pain and emptiness stayed with him no matter where he went. He paid for mental help but it did not work for him. Still he managed to be a very positive and joyful person as reflected in this song. He sings about the song Papaoutai from Stromae that is also about missing his father. In all of this he managed to combine lot's of cultural aspects of different European countries and the Netherlands. There is even a Max Verstappen reference. Without the layer of his personal life you will notice that a lot of elements can directly be related to the European countries. The young boy and the old man represent him and his father struggling trough life and his father being an example for him. The windmill is near where he spend his youth so also a trip trough memory lane to him. The final emotional scene represents him as a kid and his father when it all ended, the burning of the family photo and the building represents that you need to move on in life and not be stuck in the past. In the end he tells that he listened to his father (there are no borders for your dreams) and refers to him going to the Eurovision Songfestival. So winning would be optional, his goal was participation. It is a bit similar to the style of Little Big, a band that never participated and still has the most views on the Eurovision channel by a landslide.
It’s a tribute to his parents who both died at a young age. His dad told him that there are no boundaries. The song is about being an orphan, which Joost is himself. That’s why he says ‘Euro-papa’, ‘being alone in Germany’ and ‘Papaoutai’ (dad where are u?''im in italy but still in pain'
Joost lost his father at the age of 13 and his mother a year later. According to his father, Europe has no borders. This song is a nod to his parents and an ode to Europe.
The song is actually a bit sad. As others already stated, he lost his parents at a very young age. There are a lot of double meanings / connections to his parents and surely i am missing something but ill try to name some: Like the song is called "euro-papa" because papa is dad in dutch. He is singing that he goes to other places but he feels lonely. He lost everything except time. he is struggeling He is giving people money but nobody is helping him. He went to mental healthcare but they could not help him. He is talking about the song Papaoutai from stromae. Papa outai means "dad is here" and the phrase Où t'es? Papa où t'es? means Where are you? Dad where are you? check out the lyrics of that song too :) He is also mentioning "i wont stop until they say, yes he does that very well" because he is seeking pride from his parents. The ending is pretty clear but i think he is talking to his dad and his younger him and he tells his dad that he listend to him. Also the burning picture and burning house stands for him closing that chapter and he wants to move on and dont want to feel the pain anymore. while he was in therapy they used burning stuff to let go the old
You got it half right. Joost starts with a J. Not like the J in Jack, but like the Y in Yes. So just say Yoast and that is how it's pronounced in Dutch

the problem with this song is, its mostly in dutch and bit english, so the dutch people understand the text but not everybody love this music style so their votes will be devided. for the rest the non dutch speaking people in europe they dont understand the text, so they cant connect to the song on the text level, so put your self in their position, you dont understand what he is singing and than you have this goovy music playing. this song is not gonna make it.
I’m still hoping Eurovision will make it standard to put subtitles under at least al non-English songs so everyone is able to understand what the songs in other languages are about. I think it would make it more fun to watch and it might also make it more alluring for countries to submit a song in their native language.
@@Lars_erik if you doing a song in a native language, that means you have to sel the song by music, and i dont think its gonna work with this kind a music.

@The4TPARTY Well, as of this reply, the song has already gotten almost 2,5 million views and 80K likes within the first 24 hours of being uploaded on CZcams, so I'd say that's pretty decent for a "realistically bad" song 😉
