Try angle drilling you dowels come in the opposite angle
      /dowels\
      ( ___\ __________ /___ )
      Board
from each side of the board it will be like pinching the 2x4 thus cant pull up or out
The drawing is difficult using keyboard characters but I hope you get the idea. Very strong this way.

Keep in mind that if Maverick has any congestion, you can fold under one set of legs so that he can sleep on a down angle. It really aids in helping drain fluid from the lungs. An old trick from a pediatrician when one of my kids had pneumonia. I like the bed.

My grandfather was a cabinet maker, my father did heavy tip-up construction. When my dad retired he made beautiful all wood furniture for us girls as his father had taught him in his early days of carpentry. This was fascinating . I would see dads work and wonder, what is he doing? This was such a sweet video, it reminded me of my dad and his brilliant carpentry skills, all wood, no hardware . Beautiful piece of work! ;)

  • @lionreb

The design does remind me of some of the wooden futon chair/bed frames I have seen/ acquired over the years. I love the wooden dowel idea. You may not know that there is an ancient tradition that Solomons Temple, and also various altars were built without the use of metal instruments and no nails. The reason given for this is that it added to the aura of peace involved in the construction of these projects. Metals were used especially for instruments of war at that time and this was a way of separating these special objects/buildings from that. Building your son's bed that way made me think of that and I thought you would appreciate that connection.

For the board you screwed into place, counterbore the screw holes and plug them with dowels. That will make those joints look like the rest.

  • @sksbc3895
    @sksbc3895 Pƙed 4 lety +5

You did such a great job on that bed Doug! The 'no screws' technique is the way my Icelandic (carpenter) grandpa would have built it.. he used a lot of dowels and dovetail in his woodwork.... so you're still sticking to the Scandinavian/minimalist theme by the looks of it :) So funny, I kind of cringed when I saw those sharp corners and then you rounded them... then I thought of the finished floor and the potential scratches you might end up with and then Ashley popped in with the advice to use felts on the bottom lol That is a very cool minimalist bed! You should make up an instructional ebook on how to build it (along with your other projects) and sell them on Amazon.... nice passive income for your family! :) Excellent job... such a clever transitional bed for kids... plus, if Maverick jumps on it, it will survive!! lol

I still use the bed my parents had made as a first twin sized bed. If yours lasts as long, and given the build quality I don't see any reason why it can't be, then you'll have over fifty years of use out of the frame. And that's as close to my age as you're getting. 😉😂

Great frame. Did one to fit a Japanese minimal bedroom a while back and did it the same except I didn't put legs on it. Didn't like that as it was too low so I made 3.5 " legs and that worked out well. Ur right..... challenge promotes learning. Gotta try to learn. And the satisfaction in the end is awesome. Even if u goof up and have to fix more mistakes. It great fun to learn. At least it is for me.

I've build quite a few beds like this for my impoverished friends. One thing I always do is make the legs 18 inches high. That way you can easily fit a 64 litre laundry tub under the bed. They're only 16 inches high. When we are dealing with a twin size bed, that means that you can store a whopping 8 large laundry tubs under the bed and each of them is readily accessible. If you don't want to look at them just get a large sheet or two and put them over the whole bed.

Being a woodworker for 40+ years I also like the no fastener idea too. The only problem with doweling the slats is the dowels don't really pull the slat tight to the frame especially if they're slightly warped. The solution would be to clamp the slats to the frame first and then drill, glue and dowel. Of course that means having to shell out for clamps.... And it would take quite a bit longer waiting for the glue to dry on each slat! Whatever. It looks nice and solid. Sometimes simple and functional is best!

I absolutely adore watching your videos. Maverick’s bed is awesome. My FIL build our furniture and he was an orthopedic surgeon. He thought all mattress’ should be on a platform, he did not think your mattress should sit on an inter spring. The bed he build for our son was like to large drawers for the twin mattress to sit on and lots of storage in the drawers, it really was awesome for his toys and extra bedding. Can’t wait to see his room completed and see his face when he sees it. Happy New Year to you, your lovely wife and your beautiful children❀❀❀❀❀

Another great project completed. I have been around the block a few times as they say. And the older I get the more I believe that less is more. I like so many others probably have suffered from buyers remorse. I now do no not buy things immediately. I really try to give myself a chance to decide how much I really need something before I rush off and purchase it. In doing this I have had fewer episodes of buyers remorse. I believe that we usually do not need a lot of the things we get. Then we have a lot more work in maintaining the items (like cleaning the etc.) Less can definitely be more at times. I think you definitely have it right about keeping things simple. My best to you and your family for a peaceful, productive abd blessed New Year ahead.đŸșđŸșđŸș😄😄😄😄🕊🕊🕊🕊

Love it, we made loft beds so we had storage for our boys . $77 total for two twin beds. Your design is better that the one we found 5 yrs ago.

This looks like the same design for DIY deck lounge chairs, only a tad narrower & a back piece that can be raised or lowered. Maybe you could make lounge chairs for the new decks you will install next year. This bed has the basic build design for many pieces of DIY furniture. Anna White's channel shows you how to build the furniture & she has FREE plans for all of it - you will find everything you need to inspire you there....maybe you already know about her channel. Love the professional result of Maverick's bed with the rounded corners! GREAT job Doug!

My sons crib converts into both a toddler bed as well as a full size bed with a frame and everything
But I have often considered something in between but didnt want to buy a whole new bed set. I'm fairly handy, and this honestly looks adorable for a little boys room, maybe I'll copy cat your idea and create my own version for him đŸ€” I never even considered that until seeing this!

i built wood frames for my children many years ago that were tall enough to allow plastic storage containers to slide underneath this eliminated the need for dressers until i could make them. as they hung everything up but sox underwear shorts ect they fit in tubs under the beds my spouse made a sham that we attached with magnets so they could be easily washed. i eventually made desks night stands and matching dressers for them to suit their needs.
