I have seen that book, but never bought it. And to my surprise, seen your documentary that states some Indonesians are opened to stoicism shed a spark of light to me. This country, definitely need stoicism teachings since it'll help the people to be more grateful and proactive.

    Surprisingly, It also works for me. Jakarta's traffic is the worst, but since 2 years, i've been learning about stoicism and now everytime i got stuck in traffic, i just tried to soft sing on my scooter. Not caring too much totally help to reduce stress in my daily basis. Because you can't really do anything, I just can't control the traffic. Complaining doesn't help much either.

I think it's pretty normal to have an interest in western philosophies, as a Muslim I find stoicism has its similarities with Sufism and it is quite big in Indonesia and Malaysia. It's something logical if you think about it. It's a philosophy that gives a lot of counsel about very important issues in life without telling you to believe in god or gods. Stoicism is rising because a Lot of people can read and easily follow the ideas. Great content as always. Glad to see other people are getting help by using this philosophy

    • @kurtlangberg6143

      ricardo ceballos Indeed it is religiously neutral. You can accept Stoicism without giving up the religion you already believe in. You can even believe in it if you are atheist and have no religion at all. That’s the beauty of philosophy. Or at least this philosophy. Some philosophies are anti religious.
      But Stoicism? Believe or not, you should still strive to live virtuously.
      Live a good and virtuous life. If there is a God and he is good, he will not care what your denominational dogma has been, but will welcome you to heaven when you die based on the virtues by which you have lived your life. If there is a God but he is unjust and capricious, then you should not want to worship him. If there is no God, then when you die you will be gone, but will have lived a good and noble life that will live on in the memories of those who knew you.
      I paraphrased Marcus Aurelius’ famous quote to reflect a more monotheistic world culture.

    I kind of came to all the conclusions of things like stoicism/taoism/buddhism on my own with the help of LSD as a magnifying glass, and these perspectives can absolutely help one overcome anxiety and depression.
    I don't see it as something that can be gotten rid of, necessarily. What makes me prone to being depressed and anxious is just the way my brain works. But I have learned to navigate my brain and not let myself become oppressed by it. I use the traits that make me prone to depression to my advantage now.

    This modern version of Stoicism promoted by the Exeter group led by Donald Robertson, and of which also Massimo Pigliucci mentioned in this video is a member, seems to steer away from actual Stoic teachings. Donald Robertson is a psychologist and he mixes CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) with Stoicism.
    But Stoicism is not meant as therapy. It is actually not suited for people with mental problems, especially depressions, since some of the Stoic practices like negative visualization can even worsen the condition. The influence of modern psychology has also introduced a doctrine, which is diametrically opposed to Stoicism: the acceptance of emotions. Modern psychology assumes that emotions are part of human nature and their suppression is unhealthy, while ancient Stoicism taught the opposite. The Stoics were firmly convinced that virtue and apatheia (complete lack of emotions) are realistic goals and that humans can overcome their animal nature, which is based on emotions and desires. Emotions are not part of human nature in the eyes of the Stoics, only rationalism.
    Ancient Stoicism was optimistic about our abilities to change our mind for the better; modern psychologist stoicism is deeply pessimistic and believes that we cannot change our Freudian/Jungian psychology, so that we have to accept, not suppress our emotions.
    It would be very unfortunate, if Indonesians get introduced into this modernized and distorted form of Stoicism and are never given the chance to find out what Chrysippus, Epictetus and Seneca actually taught.

    • @esafudoh7202
      @esafudoh7202 Před 4 lety +3

      It may be the case, but as long as it's helpful, i see no problem with it. Why use the original doctrine if the modified one is easier to be used and more effective? As far as i know, accepting emotion in order to process it through the lens of stoicism is easier than outright reject it. The field of psychology seems to support this notion. Stoicism is not a religion, thus it's far more flexible for change. Just because the ancient philospher did it, doesn't mean it's better. So yeah, i disagree with you, but i know you want stoicism to be more popular, same like me

    National book seller doesn't always mean that the idea is accepted nationationally, since most of people in here are not keen readers. Moreover, the standard of being called 'best seller' is questionable. 3000 books sold is already called bestseller. Compare to 15 mio people in jakarta only!

    I think there is singular big similarity between Stoic and traditional Javanese (an ethnic in Indonesia) are holding together. One is that life is not always up to our wish. Difficulties is inevitable. "Narimo ing pandum" is a javanese proverb that translate to "to accept everything coming toward us". Whether it's good or bad. This philosophy in our local even become a joke. Say if you just had an accident on moto and lose your feet. There will be some who say "it's better than u lost your soul". We feel grateful for the smaller damage by the unaccidented greater damage. Grateful yet masochistic at some degree. The quite same value are also socialized by islam. At least my ustadz/teacher have taught me such things.

    honestly, i see that stoicism aligns really well with islam. they also encourage to "submit to God" when it comes things that out of control, hold your anger, manage your emotions, even the prayer is a form of meditation.
    there's 3 unique things that stoics practice that's literally the same thing what a devout muslim does are,
    1. speak less than necessary, and if you can't speak anything good (ex. scolding, dirty words), then try to shut up. This you'll feel more calm because you think rationally, and not a lot of emotions spilled out and spark more anger or any bad negative feelings.
    2. Accept whatever happens as a positive thing, is the same, learn something good and think about good outcomes from hardships and suffering.
    3. Focus on what you can control, in Islam destiny is a big concept, All humans have predestined moments of their lives, and those things happen for a good reason, and it depends on yourself what you can reflect from it.

    Loved the video although I don' t think it can be good for the political climate of Indonesia. Stoicism can have a backlash, oversimplified it is the art to not worry about things out of your control, but whatever is out of your control is subjective.
    Politics is about cooperation, if you place stoicism into a political climate it can cause people to not care, which can result in ignoring problems or not voting as examples.
    The last thing Indonesia needs now is a stoicism. The people need to work together and rise up against the many problems there. Papua stopped their stoicism like thoughts and began to make a change.

    Meanwhile in my country, the local term for "philosopher" is pejoratively used and refers to someone boasting about one's intellect. It's difficult to live in a society which discourages intellectual and philosophical discussions.

      Sweetie, it's not just your country. Come to America or Europe, you will be awash in mindless prattle that will make you yearn for your country.

    Is there a relationship between stoicism in increase EQ (Emotional Quotient) and SQ (Spiritual Quotient)? Can EQ and SQ related in stoicism?

    • @magister.mortran
      @magister.mortran Před 4 lety +2

      Stoicism teaches Apatheia (complete absence of emotions), not EQ.
      In Stoicism you do not need to interpret the emotions of others, because they are irrelevant and beyond your control. Only your own virtue is relevant.
      Seneca once recommends to pretend showing emotions, when society requires it or others expect it, but he also cautions against feeling anything internally when pretending so.

    As a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (aka Mormon), I can say that stoicism is very compatible with my religion and religion in general. It would be great if people were more tolerant, even here in America.

    The best parts of stoicism come from eastern philosophies. He had it in his backyard.
