The School of Mechanical Engineering (SMEC) is one of the premier and oldest schools at VIT right from its inception in 1984. The school has a team of highly qualified faculty members to teach and guide the best minds. The interdisciplinary approach to engineering education and research uniquely positions this school to educate the engineers of the future and prepare them to work in a variety of fields and disciplines. The courses offered cater to Aerospace, Defence, Manufacturing. Energy and Automotive Industries. This has enabled the students to pursue higher studies in leading Universities across the globe. The B. Tech. Programmes offered by the School are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. Students are offered an option to do one semester in foreign universities like Cranfield University, UK, University of West, Sweden and Wenzhou University, China through the Semester Aboard Program (SAP). This helps them to gain a global exposure and develop new ideas. The school also has vibrant Student Clubs and Chapters of Professional Bodies such as ASME, SAE, ISHRAE & IEEE which organise various competitions and workshops for students. The student teams also participate in a lot of competitions at National and International levels. The school regularly organises various programs like Conferences, Seminars, Workshops, Symposia, Faculty Development Programmes, Value Added Programmes for Students and Professionals, Makeathons and Designathons for the overall development of faculty members as well as students. The research programmes are exciting and versatile. The school has developed pioneering technology in various areas of research like Additive Manufacturing Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Vehicle, Bio-materials, Composites, Fuel cell, Machine Vision, MEMS, Smart Materials and Manufacturing, Material Characterisation, Robotics and Automation. The School receives significant research funding from several Indian government agencies such as DST, DRDO, MNRE, CSIR, CVRDE, CPDO, IE, AR & DB, CVRDE, BRNS, ISRO, UGC, NRB, AICTE etc. and International agencies such as Royal Academy of Engineering, DST-UKIERI, Indo-German etc. The Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India has recognized the school for its research activities and extended support through the FIST scheme. The school has modern facilities, enabling cutting edge research in a wide spectrum of technological areas. The school actively associates, through consultancy services, with local industries in product design, complex part manufacturing and computationally fluid dynamics. Students get placements in some of the leading industries. The last batch (2019-20) of B. Tech. Students got placed with dream offers in major companies like Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. Many students go ahead to pursue research in their area of interest.
Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with various Industries, Research Organisations and Leading Universities have given the faculty and students the opportunity to interact and exchange ideas that paves way for many collaborative researches in future. Some tangible outcomes of such collaborations are industry sponsored laboratories such as Valeo Centre of Excellence and M. Tech Automotive Engineering Programme in collaboration with ARAI Pune. The School has world class laboratories like Automotive Research Centre (ARC), Centre for excellence of Autonomous Vehicle Research in Collaboration State University of New York, Binghamton, Centre of Advanced Research Entity (V-CARE), Cyber Physical Systems Lab etc. with sophisticated and latest technologies and equipment. Apart from these, there are other labs for the UG and PG students for their practical learning.
