  • Opinionated DS9 Episode Guide kicks off a week of Dominion War coverage. Constant convoys of Jem'hadar ships combined with political maneuvering leaves Sisko with no choice but to mine the wormhole, even if it will lead to war. The good news though is: cool space battles!

Here's one scene I particularly love:
Quark: "Rom, I always said you were an idiot, but I never believed it more than I do at this moment."
Rom: "Brother, if you want to insult me, it's going to have to wait till later. I'm busy."
    Quark: "Busy doing what?"
Rom: "Preparing perimeter defenses for the attack."
Quark: "There are dozens of engineers that could be doing that. Starfleet engineers. Hew-mons. You should be on Bajor with your new wife."
    Rom: "That's what Leeta said."
Quark: "Well, she's right. This is not your fight."
Rom: "It's not your fight either, but I don't see you leaving."
Quark: "I have to look out for my bar."
Rom: "And I have to look out for you."
    Quark: "Me?"
Rom: "You're my brother. Whatever happens, we belong together."
Quark: "Well, like I said, you're an idiot." (gives Rom a kiss on the back of his head)

You know DS9 is a great show when a fantastic episode like "Call to Arms" only gets a 7 compared to the rest of the series.
As for the self replicating mines, I think they can work by using material and energy from destroyed ships to replicate. It's impossible or extremely time consuming for the Dominion to pick off the mines at distance since the mines are cloaked, they're very small, and they have their own propulsion systems. And whenever a ship gets close enough to hit the mines with their weapons, the mines would be able to swarm the ship and blow it up. Then the remaining mines use the wreckage and anti-matter from the ship to replace the destroyed mines.

Oooh the opening arc of the Dominion War. One of my faves of DS9 and of your old reviews back in the day. I can only imagine how this arc was back when it first aired during the era where overarching stories in Trek were still a rarity. It is also, IIRC, the beginning of your League of Starship Captains gag that I wish would be used more often but I know would be difficult to do and keep in moderation without getting stale.
Also amusing that you're uploading your Dominion War stuff, given the latest Picard Season 3 developments.

I find I'm torn between "Wow, it's neat to see an actual _fleet_ of Starfleet vessels" and "When the hell did Starfleet get so big?" The Doylist answer, of course, is CGI starships instead of being limited to models... but the two biggest fleets we even heard of before this were Wolf 359 and the fleet trying to blockade the Romulan/Klingon border, and both those fleets were more talked about than seen in any sort of detail.

It really speaks to the differences in their respective cultures: to the Betazoids, it's a presentation of intimacy. Literal nakedness as a metaphor for emotional nakedness. To the Ferengi, it's an act of titillation and objectification: pleasure for the guests at the expense of the bride.

@@Kameth there's a brilliant Tumblr thread from back in the day where a Klingon is asking a Vulcan why they let humans basically run the Federation. The Vulcan's reply was, "most civilizations would be happy with a gift of just a warp core. Humans would ask for three, one to travel with and two to experiment with." The Vulcan goes on for a time, explaining how the humans would do the most off the wall shit that wound up being beneficial to the entire quadrant and that they would be publishing the results of their experiments for everyone to read about something that had previously been thought completely impossible. The Klingon then said, "that sounds great. May we join?" 🤣😂🤣

A few things. 1980's and 1990's males with long hair were seen as the tough guys. Also probably a good way to save on makeup. As the wig would cover the prosthetic edges. Just like why most of the Farengi had that odd band that covered the back of their necks. It just made the process cheaper.
