  • Video footage taken on August 1 in Saga shows a large-scale “hyakuninshu” card game competition played as part of a national high school student culture and arts festival held in the city from July 27 to Aug. 1. In the game, players have to quickly sweep up the cards hinted at by a series of short poems melodiously read out loud by an reader. Only the top eight competitors from each prefecture could take part in the game in which the field was slowly whittled down to determine a single champion. The position of reader was also up for contest, with Hiyori Osanai (shown), a third-year student from Aomori Prefecture, chosen as top from among over 70 auditionees who vied for the role. Hinako Tanaka and Hiraku Kikuta, both from Saitama Prefecture, were also selected as readers. (Maho Fukui)

i know this called "karuta" from chihayafuru..
Karuta is a card game based upon Japanese poetry, with a hundred poems as cards so memorization is key. As a reader reads out the first line of the poem, the player's goal is to touch the corresponding card that has the second line of the poem before the opponent.
