I'm 47 years old. Growing up videos like this just simply didn't exist.
No one even had the slightest idea that one day we would have something this special.
We got the album and we listened to it in our walkmans or discmans and played it at our house parties.
We definitely had a personal relationship with albums and a shared relationship amongst our friend group.
Everyone has everything nowadays and I don't think kids coming up can relate because they have everything at their fingertips on their device in their pockets.
We got a few albums a year.
In the space of no time at all we got blood sugar sex magik Metallica superunknown check your head use your illusion and never mind.
    Then along came this album.
Now all these years later we have these incredible videos celebrating these albums.
The 90's were special. It was The End of a long era. The internet changed everything!
At first it really was not that great.
Now we have videos like this that are great.
    Thank you.

@@AudioHazeI've made lists of importance to try to explain to people I know who are trying to get into recording of how much each part of the process matters and great performance is always right at the top, just above songwriting, arranging, and only then maybe the actual sounds the instruments make, and then waaaaay down the list is the type of mic used, and waaay down near the bottom is the type of mic pre and converter.

My dad was a touring drummer in the 60s/70s and often opened for the Beach Boys, of all people, in the late 70s/80s, and played everything from rock/pop/country/polka until the pandemic when he was almost 80. I've always admired his insane knowledge of all of the technical aspects for sound. He was every bands' sound guy. He passed away 2 years ago and owned so much stuff that I'm still trying to figure out what it all is. It's a really cool scavenger hunt. My point is, thank you for making the technical aspects super easy to follow and understand, you ended up in my algorithm after I binged Drumeo for 2 days, and I'm glad I found your channel! As someone who got a somewhat heavier stutter but very similar in nature to Garth, I applaud this man's courage to allow you to put him on camera while he's responding to questions: his way of coping with it is flawless and the discourse seems reasonably fluent, even for this peculiar type of stutter (he struggles with sibilant and fricative consonants, while the majority of us struggle with labial and dental consonants). But whatever, great video, really great stuff, I loved every second of it! You killed it in the interview, you killed it in the recreation of Bombtrack and you killed it in the "teaching" department too: I know jack shit about audio production, but the explanations were very "down to earth" and I feel that even an idiot like me could understand and learn something new: as a musician myself (although nowadays I'm only playing in orchestras and my death metal skills would certainly need a rework) is always useful and interesting to know what happens behind the scenes

Thanks for your comment. I didn't realise that stutters take different forms but it makes sense. When I first heard Garth talking I didn't realise until he said it. Hats off to him for his courage to do the interview. It's nice to see that a lot of challenges that people face are being more normalised and accepted, but I imagine it's still very difficult for those who deal with them.

Really feels he learned to cope well with a stutter and just goes on completely confident.
The funniest thing to me (and also probably a pretty successful coping mechanism) is that the stutter is right there in his nickname: GGGareth 😂 so it's already out from the start, don't let it be an issue, trying to mask it or whatever. It's just how he talks, as everyone talks differently.

I'm a 38 years old Brazilian and RATM has been one of my favorite bands since the first time I listened to their music (2001). And it killed me when I heard they had broken up just 1 year before. That didn't make me quit the fandom, though. Their killer sound and lyrics were inebriating to me. So I kept enjoying their music. And all of a sudden, they were back and there was a date scheduled for Brazil. October 9th, 2010. To keep it short: it was the very best show I've ever seen. And I've been to Black Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth, AC/DC, Sepultura, A7X, Alice In Chains, Ghost etc. But there's nothing like RATM live. The energy. The performance. Everything. They're just different. And will be forever a top 5 all time for me. Cheers brother! 🤘

Got into Nine Inch Nails around that time too, first album of theirs I heard was probably Broken and not long after The Downward Spiral. I remembered playing Quake around then and thinking, man that sounds like NIN, especially the screams in the theme, then I noticed Trent Reznor did actually do the music and sound. Still one of the best OST's ever and such amazing sound design for it's time, holds up so well today.
Speaking of Id Software soundtracks, I remember when I first started to notice Doom tracks sounded like Pantera, then Alice in Chains, ect then when I made a thread on a message board everyone thought I was imagining things and I honestly couldn't believe people weren't at least hearing Angry Chair and Them Bones, then years later CZcams videos started coming out about it.

Bro, that clip of Zach blowing out his voice! It looks like his twisting his arm behind his back, in the same way police do when they’re forcefully escorting someone; almost like he’s adding that physical pain, with all the anger and defiance that pain inspires, into his performance. No wonder it Rage sounds as intense as they do! Zach is literally ‘brutalising’ himself to give that raw, being dragged out of a protest, edge to his vocal performance. You literally hear his voice give out on that final note. Truly inspiring footage, showing why the song itself feels as inspiring as it does.
Also, I applaud your attention to detail. Your knowledge of the technical aspects of the equipment (obviously, confirmed by Garth), and the effect that would have on the way it sounds, is awesome! I’m a layman when it comes to audio engineering and it’s so cool to watch two people, who really know what they’re talking about, get into the nitty-gritty of why Rage’s sound is so inherently…. well, gritty.

This is exactly why to this day I still crank up rage either on the radio or in my house.. Never knew it was produced so natural and organically.. Bravo!! That's why it stands the test of time. Pro Tools who?? It was an actual craft from an actual human being that had a skill... I have always loved an album that just connects in a different way... But then to see the band live!!! (I am sure I am a dying breed) but I love when you see a band live versus the album, I want to hear it's not exact as it was cut and pressed. There is a ton of music I love, but then seek out seeing and hearing them live. If it still gives the same feeling and it now possess nuances that does not exist in the studio cut but its still that same amazing song or band..... Thats where it's at for me. I don't want to hear a studio cut live. Music is a feeling... When they are on point and feeling it too and it's not exact to the cut. Worth waaaay more to me.

Rage, and this album in particular, changed my 15 yr old soul. Every track is burned into my brain from countless hrs of rocking to it. This was such a fantastic walk down memory lane. The remake was fucking sick. I thought there was no way in hell you'd even come close to Zak's vocals, but she nailed it! You channeled your inner TM on guitar as well. Kudos, job well done.

What a fantastic concept. Set up a PA, put people in the room, and then record one of the best live bands to ever perform. Nearly as ground breaking as cranking the preamps up with the Beatles or close micing drums for the first time with the Beatles. Someone just had to think outside the box and imagine the potential and try something different. When this Rage album came out, it was one of the best sounding records ever. It still is. When you find out that it was recorded super loud, with massive bleed through every microphone, and yet it still came out tight and right, it makes you wonder why we so often go down the rabbit hole of purity and isolation in recording. It also helps that the musicians could actually play well and super tight together. Knowing your parts cold and executing that makes a huge difference in the feel and energy of the performance. The inability to just play well and consistently is something not talked about enough these days. Skill on the instruments isn't such a necessity now that we can literally record parts note by note and make it all perfect.

I find it insane they were all together in that one room. That first cd had such a clean sound and with good headphones it’s easy to isolate the instruments. I would often use that first cd to test audio equipment with. I recall Tom even saying how he didn’t like recording the first cd because he felt too clinical in the studio and this flies in the opposite of what I imagined he meant. It’s great to hear Garth talk about that legendary album and how he wanted to capture the raw energy of early Ratm.

Been listening to RATM again, back in the 90s I couldn’t find their records in our neck of the woods (Eastern Europe) so I only caught them on MTV. Now I finally listened to their first album with high quality sound and I immediately picked up on how ‘live’ they sounded, how organic and immediate and larger than life. So grateful they got this guy who realized what an unbelievably awesome band they were live and wanted to capture exactly that. Greetings from Romania, first time on your channel ❤

Zack seems like he'd a complete nightmare to even be around. Very talented at his things in the band. And by the way, by his things I mean that one cadence he used and his trademark snarling delivery, and that's it.
He pinched all of his lyrics from Asian Dub Foundation and Public Enemy.

    • @IWannaGoMissing

@@peachmelba1000what u mean pinched his lyrics. Nobody has discussed Zack de la Rocha being a rampant plagiarist? I mean he quotes them a couple times but the vast majority of ratm lyrics are original
And I think it’s just dishonest downplaying his contributions to the band when without lyrics and speeches it isnt able to be a political band the way it is. One couldn’t exist without the other… in order for it to be the band it was zack needed them and they needed him
