I am not sure if the new penguin is my favorite version or not, but dang she is a really strong Contender and after only one appearance! The ruthless mother angle was absolutely incredible, in simply changing them to a woman highlights a slightly different side of the Cabaret style the penguin usually exemplifies. And I am still marveling at the decision to turn the iceberg into a cruise ship, I mean there are so many layers to that it is absolutely perfect. It's one of those ideas so good that you have to wonder why no one thought of it before.
And I was pleasantly surprised to see Barbara is a lawyer. Based on the shot we saw of her shooting a gun in the trailer I expected this to be her never on-screen police career, but making her a lawyer means that we can highlight two sides of the legal system in Gotham while creating a clever linchpin to connect other cast members. She had a direct connection with the police, the courtroom, and even more external characters like Dr quinzel. What a smash hit version of Barbara, and I cannot wait to see more of Harley Quinn in season 2. And I too hope we get further developments with Penguin, because one episode is just a waste. If only there was more time to explore the characters. Let's hope this series runs for a long time.
This character dynamic was so good! And the cast were all fantastic. My sweetheart and I binged the entire series and were absolutely giddy. Tingles by the end!

There is no 'flashy animation' due to budgetary restrictions.
Timm / Tucker et al would LOVE for a modern day equivalent to TMS to handle the animation but they are working to the budget they have. Thankfully, as always with these amazing creative teams, the character and art design holds the piece up and compensates for the limited animation.

It's such a worthy addition to the Batmanimaiton pantheon- they really do perfectly balance maintaining character's core qualities and adding new traits. When I heard Minnie Driver was Penguin I assumed she'd use a recieved English accent and play up Penguin's delusions of grandeur like an evil Hyacinth Bucket. I'm not saying that should have happened, I just though it might.

After we've all enjoyed these episodes of Totally Schway Flipside, if you still can't get enough Caped Crusader, may I recommend The Batman Audio Adventures. I discovered it by accident right before Caped Crusader dropped and it was a match made in heaven.
The series leans as explicitly as possible into anachronism, featuring both the internet and 10-cent payphones. It features vintage throwbacks, familiar favorites, and fresh takes on characters and concepts. I listened to the first season just in time to roll right into Caped Crusader, binged that, then dove right back into Audio Adventures.
It's far sillier than Caped Crusader, to be sure - imagine Brave and the Bold if you've ever seen that. Yet it still manages to be heart-wrenching and even downright terrifying on occasion. It's campy, zany, fun, and wildly imaginative. I cannot recommend it enough, and the early 20th century aesthetic is really helping me work off the craving for more Caped Crusader. And, Lord, did I need it.

I can sort of understand the criticism about diversity in the 40’s. I don’t think it was needed or anything, but I do think it might have been interesting if they’d showed racism, sexism, and homophobia as being prevailing societal issues. It think it could’ve been interesting if they’d shown characters like Barbara trying to battle the sexist system, or Renee and Harley having to hide the fact that they’re dating. Again, it’s not like it ruins anything or that it was needed, I just think it could’ve worked if they’d decided to go that route.

You pretty much summed up my feelings. I would like to see that mined for interesting and impactful storytelling, but a purely aesthetic take is really fun. And I'm glad they went this route, since socio-politics gets me down enough in real life. It was refreshing (excellent choice of words, Mary) to just watch people be people and see Batman fight gangsters and a ghost. And it still managed to work well without pulling any punches. Best of both worlds, I think.

And so it begins. Rebinging Teen Titans, The Batman 2004, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold will have to wait a while.
Surprised that the first ep is Penguin's spotlight, in my opinion. Anyways, Bats' look is fine as is the usual, all while the first arty strike in the ep sure felt like a true downer, since Batman didn't save the goons there.
How the heck did people figure out the Penguin is an Oswalda way before the leaks, I wonder? Anyways, she's so far a worthy iteration. That umbrella trick with the cannon sure made me think she at least won in some manner.
I didn't think Aaron and Ronald looked like that secessionist's sons though. Anyways, I actually thought Aaron was voiced by Bruce Timm, since he looked a bit like the guy. Am surprised he shared the same VA as ratty Ronald though.
I suspect Bullock will turn over a new leaf after a great event that affects him, not unlike one or two iterations out there. 'Course, I may be wrong as I go forwards with the rest of the show... though if I am right, it's the redemption of Ellen Yin all over again.
Gotta like how Barbara saved a handcuffed crim who got abandoned by Bullock. Even if she won't possibly become Batgirl (being a lawyer is a busy career, day in and night out), she'll still be a heroine who saves lives, no matter how scummy they are.
Bad faith arguments against Caped Crusader are inevitable. Even I bet there are 1966 and Superfriends fans who badmouthed B: TAS many years ago.
Still, there is a side in me disappointed that the show has no historical connections and a set timeline. Believe me, I'm a sucker for grim WW2 foreshadowing and occasional trivia being mentioned, and believe me, no timeline means a lotta hassles for archival folks like the Watchtower Database in case there'll be bigger, better sequels.
Interesting how Alfred sounds like a mix of DCAU Alfred and The Batman 2004 Alfred. Higher pitched as the former, yet verbose as the latter... but it could be how my ears interpreted the inflection.
Bats and Barbara having a nodding interaction is just priceless.
I actually like how Bruce tiresomely joked twice about "falling overboard" to Barbara and a few ladies afterwards. Guess we're back with the aloof Burtonverse Wayne personality there.
Say, Smears, is Bruce Greenwood ir Roger Craig Smith in the Top 5 animated Batman list?
Wait, Kevin Smith replied on the SL Onomatopoeia vid?!
What can we say, Diedrich Bader so far is doing well as the affable jerk Harvey Dent. Looks like his Canmore experience from Greg Weisman's Gargoyles hasn't faded yet.
Gotta love seeing the Batsub, all while feeling morbid because of the numerous crates under the water. Now that was neat "show, don't tell" horror.
Was expecting blood to appear in the ep.
Appreciate how Pengy called Batman "Dracula". Felt like a very neat nod to Joker calling the hero "Drac" in the very first ep of The Batman 2004, "The Bat in the Belfry". (And since Nocturna will show up...)
Can't believe I heard a familiar clanging sound effect (rewatch Justice League+Unlimited, particularly the episode "Clash", and the aforementioned DC Comics cartoons, and you'll hear what I mean) when the arty shell hit the GCPD. Also heard said sound effect during the Mami Tomoe vs. Witch Gertrud showdown in Puella Magi Madoka Magica's second ep (it involves a giant couch), as a non-Western animation example.
The idea of taking down Penguin and unhousing the GCPD, thus leading to a chain reaction benefitting Rupert Thorne (who seems as manipulative as The Batman Strikes tie-in comics iteration), sure reminds me of The Batman 2022 movie with the flooding of Gotham, but the Penguin there still being around.
Well, will watch the next ep right after seeing this part of the podcast. So far, so good.

So, I was always intrigued but cautiously optimistic about the show. The trailers never really blew me away and so I was a bit trepidatious about watching it. Still I will always be of the belief that releasing all the episodes at once is a stupid idea and terrible for marketing purposes. If anyone likes binging that's perfectly fine, but the show will not be nearly as popular as it could've been. That's not to discredit whatever format someone might prefer to watch a show in, it's just a statistical fact based on the examples of streaming services having done this in the past with it rarely leading to positive results. The few instances where it is successful is if the show is ludicrously popular like Stranger Things, which is a level of popularity that, let's face it, Caped Crusader wasn't going to reach regardless.
So with that out of the way, I just watched the first episode a few moments ago. I thought it was… fine… I guess. Not that memorable. Didn't really hook me in. One thing I was worried about from the trailers was the animation seemed a bit underwhelming and so far I still feel completely this way. The animation is consistently pretty lacklustre. Characters stay completely frozen, the frame rate is extremely inconsistent (and not in an artistic way) , the CG cars can be distractingly rendered most of the time and just generally the characters seem to lack a sense of fluidity whenever they move. For the few instances that X-Men '97 tried to disguise the few missteps they had with their animation, Caped Crusader multiplies that by tenfold. The background paintings of Caped Crusader however are really great. Penguin was a fun change and an alright threat. Although for me still whenever I think of Penguin, his mannerisms, his cadence, is unique laugh and voice I will always think of Burgess Meredith from the Adam West show. The voice cast is solid but doesn't really stick in my memory so far either. I really love the music and thought it felt really atmospheric. Obviously not as iconic or bombastic as Shirley Walker's music but it feels very appropriate for the show. Hoping the show improves but if it's the same quality it's kind of mediocre. I'm going to watch episode 2 in a short while after writing this comment.

    • @michaelandreipalon359
      @michaelandreipalon359 Před měsícem

I really hope Stranger Things won't start jumping the shark near its end. Shows nowadays tend to be that way, as woefully seen with Game of Thrones and Star vs. the Forces of Evil.
Can sympathize with the staying frozen bits, they reminded me too much of Archer (a show I'm not hyped on about).
I don't mind the CG vehicles though. It's been a thing since the Justice League cartoon with, say, the Javelins.
And also hope that Season 2 is where things grow the beard, not unlike how Justice League reached its stride in Season 2.

    • @SerumLake

I dunno, I think the Netflix model of dumping everyone episode at once has been very successful. Granted, shows like X-Men ‘97 captured the public consciousness for a longer time because it was on the weekly schedule, but I HATED the wait between episodes. I’ve never liked the TV companies determining when I watch something, so I’ll always prefer this method of delivery.

I originally had reservations about the new Penguin but I was won over by the first scene
Honestly my main sticking point with the series is the animation, I felt like even with the budget they did have, it lacked... Stylisation ? I also missed the strong use of shadow like BTAS. If it wasn't for Batman being there the visual style could passed of for any other show in a way that something like BTAS' shadows were incredibly recognizable didn't suffer from. The intro of the show actually has a very strong visual identity that I like
Also that they didn't stick to the 1940s bit, I would've been fine with sidestepping some social issues but also they sidestep any other interesting material that could come from the time period except for episode 2 basically which was a minor let down
Though I will say, it does feel like a bad faith argument to say "You shouldn't want to learn about the past from a cartoon", because people that care for historical accuracy also tend to be people already familiar with the history. I'd say it's more people that would've enjoyed seeing the effort put in to make it authentic even if it sidesteps over some of the uglier stuff, committing to the bit per se. Saying "Go pick up a book" feels like the wrong way to express a justifiable idea because it's missing the point of *why* people are saying like, like if it's just an excuse to make racist batman or to undo the race swaps rather than a genuine desire to see commitment to the time period, the past isn't just ugliness and racism.
Not saying you're wrong per se, but I would say it isn't the best explanation for what you feel
